I had purchased 5 tickets to the Salisbury Civic center for the 2:00 Monster truck show today ... In advance . Now we get hit with this snow storm and i contacted the civic center to express my concerns of driving there from Dover , De ... I requested a refund and was told very curtly that they dont do refunds and that the show would go on . I have no choice but to eat the tickets because i do not want to jeopardize my 11 yr olds well being in this winter snow storm ... I guess what I was hoping is that you could maybe post something concerning the Civic centers position to hold onto my money and try to coerce me into putting my family in danger from trying to travel in these conditions . If I'm being un-understanding could you please tell me so , I think it is very wrong of them to take the position that they are and would greatly appreciate it if in ur heart you find your self on my side of this situation .... Pleas Joe ... Could you help any ? My money was so tight in these times of uncertainty that the 161.00 dollars would go far to helping my finances . I just wanted to show this young man a great show and feel the Civic center is being un-understanding about the weather thing . They dont have to worry with it because of last nites show .
I will be hoping and praying that you find the situation i am facing as news worthy for your blog . You have done so much there on SBY for all of us I hope you can see what i'm asking ? If the commenters money is tight, maybe they sholdn't have bought the tickets in the first place. Ever heard of prioritizing. Since you will not be driving look at all the gas money you will save.

When the December storm hit, my wife and I had to eat the cost of two nights in a hotel room as we tried to catch a flight at National Airport. We also had to spend $28 parking at the hotel for those two nights. Ultimately, our flight was cancelled altogether, and we could not get out until several days later, causing us to make two trips to the airport. We were out at least the same $161 that this poster is complaining about, yet nobody offered to give us our money back.
Weather happens. I'm not sure why it should be the Civic Center's (or, really, the show promoter's) responsibility to reimburse anyone for their tickets. Like you, they would prefer not to have all this snow, as it will severely decrease their concessions revenue when people don't show up.
I guess the moral is don't buy non-refundable tickets if you can't afford to eat the costs associated with bad weather, heavy traffic or whatever else happens that causes you to miss your show, flight, etc.
Sorry for my lack of sympathy, but I don't get all these people asking for their money back. I never even considered that I shouldn't have to pay for the extras I had to purchase back in December, thanks to winter weather. Maybe President Obama should create a stimulus program for those victims unable to attend tonight's monster truck show.
First of all-The Civic center has a policy of no refunds. Period. It's on everything they sell.
Next-If your finances are that tight you should have taken the kid to something less expensive, like a library or maybe a local high school or college sports event.
Third-Joe can't help you. I'm not sure what you were expecting him to do, except expose your foolishness on his blog. When you take a chance by buying event tickets in advance for something going on in January, sometimes you lose.
Sorry to sound so callous, but I too have financial issues right now, and wouldn't even think about spending that kind of money to entertain an 11 year old. Lesson learned?
Like most events the tickets are not refundable unless the performer is not able to attend. The center has no control over the weather . I have been to many rock shows with lawn tickets, I have gotten wet more than once . "The Show Must Go On"
Oh - and in addition to my previous comment about the hotel I had to stay in in December, I lost a day's pay today because the place I work was closed down. Who will reimburse me for that lost income? I wish Joe could maybe post something concerning my boss's position to deny me my money and to try to coerce me to stay home today. I think it is very wrong of my boss to take the position that he is, as I need my income.

Wow this is very pathetic...times are "tight" and he spends 161.00 for exhaust filled air to breathe and enough noise to blow an ear drum??? If he is struggling with finances that badly he should have put his money to better use.. I am sure there are cheaper things to do to spend some quality time with his son.

Sorry these folks are out of money but that's the chance you take when purchasing non-refunable tickets...and for a show in the middle of winter when a snowstorm is possible...duh!
I think Im sick of hearing all this whining, the promoter will probably make the tickets good for the next show for petes sake.
8 inches on the ground at my house now at 3pm, 6-12 inches more on the way, and BUSINESS 13 HAS NOT BEEN PLOWED!!!! I just had to go out for a prescription and many cars are disabled/ stuck! Where are the snowplows? Waiting for night differential pay to start, I guess?

That said, c'mon already. Tickets all over the world are non-refundable for concerts and other entertainments unless it is the entertainer or promoter canceling the show, like for illness.
That's not a Civic Center policy alone. That's how it's done everywhere.
The guy wasn't asking Joe for money, just for help with pressuring the Civic Center to do a refund.

I cant believe this dude is thinking anyone should be giving his money back.....NON REFUNDABLE! Does he not know what that means? And I agree, if the money is the problem, then he should not have bought those tickets in the first place at go see a bunch of loud trucks driving in circles at the Civic Center. Sounds like he needs to get a life!
My money was tight in these times... if you money was so tight dont be a fool and spend $161.00 to watch monster trucks.

If you are not going to attend the show come "hell or high water", then don't buy tickets in advance. By the time you pay the civic center's mail processing fee, you don't really save anything by buying in advance.

That is true, BUT it is also the PROMOTER that will be out a whole lot of cash if the show is canceled. Will the Civic Center refund the $6,000 the promoter paid to rent the place? Will the Civic Center waive the other fees they impose on promoters for security and crew? Will the Civic Center give the promoter another weekend date for the this date to be made up (if postponed)? Would the Civic Center give the promoter this second date for free- since they already paid for today's date?
I feel bad for your loss of cash, but I regularly drive to 76ers, Orioles, Eagles, Redskins games rain, shine or snow. Sometimes I make that long journey and the games go on (always with NFL games), sometimes they are postponed and sometimes I just stay home and eat the price of the ticket. It stinks, but it is just part of buying tickets to events so far from home.
Look at it from all sides.
the civic center sells out less than 1% of the time. buy your tickets when you get their. go to a place that compacts cars. i am sure the old man will let you and your kids watch for free.
There are an awful lot of people out there going places, Walmart has no intention of closing. Restaurants are all open, even MVA and Sun Trust were open today. I went to both earlier. Just drive in a careful manner and go about your business, Monster Trucks or whatever.
The Civic Center is not plowed. So all you have to do is pull up there get out of your car and when you walk onto the sidewalk or even in the parking lot. Fall and sue the civic center. Then you will get your money back.
If you buy advanced tickets for anything from Nov. to March, you're taking the chance that the event could be affected by snow. I know we don't get this much snow very often, but this winter we've already had above our average.

3:01 you are correct, they could have bought event insurance, and protect their patrons. Logically, if holding events during the winter months, you would think they would insure it. This is why the civic center is dying. It is poorly run. It has nothing to do with no booze, the place is an embarrassment, uncomfortable seats, ceiling tiles missing, etc., no wonder no one wants to go there. It is not solely the promoters call, this is the only way the civic center get out of a loss if the promoter cancels. This way the promoter is forcing payment. The city is in a state of emergency and neither business can come to a logical agreement, so the citizens get hurt. Next time buy your tickets at the door. Buyer beware.

The civic center has a contract with the promoter. The civic center will get paid regardless if the event is held or not. The promoter cannot simply cancel and walk away. I agree with you... if the weather is this bad, it should have been rescheduled or canceled and refunded. But it was the promoter's call.
The drivers of the tractor trailers bringing the show risked their lives to entertain you and your family. The drivers of the Monster trucks risk their lives to entertain you and your family. All of the people working at the Civic Center risk their lives to get to work, so your family can be entertained. If you don't want to take a chance driving here after all those people did that for you and your family, that's fine but refund,,oh no no no. An iron worker risks his life every day he goes to work and of course how about our soldiers.. It's all relevant. How much risk do you want to take to entertain your family or not loose your $161? Choices choices.
The tickets you bought were advertised as non-refundable. Be better aware of what you are buying next time. Also, there were $10 tickets being sold for Friday night's show. If you were on a budget & just HAD TO buy monster truck tickets then maybe the cheaper tickets would have been a better decision for your family. Other than that....you are wasting alot of time with this arguement.
NO venue in america gives refunds...if the show goes on, they would not give a refund...
you will see this on all tickets, all venues, everywhere across country...unfortunate, but it sucks that weather forced you not to go...
but honestly, it is what it is...
went saturday and the drivers did not even come out and autograph our checkered flags!!
