MAYOR INVITES PUBLIC TO SPEAK ON CRIME

Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr., will open Council Chambers at the Government Office Building (125 N. Division Street) on Monday, December 7, 2009, to give the public the opportunity to share concerns and solutions to the 12% increase in Part 1 crimes in Salisbury. The public meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be open until all interested residents have had an opportunity to speak.

“I believe that unfiltered, ungaveled honesty from the public is what we need as elected officials,” said Mayor Ireton. “With the change in position of one of our council members, we may now have an opening to truly effect change in our community.

I encourage concerns, new ideas and stability as I turn the microphone over to the public. Citizens know that a healthy civic discourse is the only way government moves forward. Our City is facing many battles on many fronts – crime, the economy, the wastewater treatment plant – yet I am confident we can weather the storms, united in our efforts. This open forum, based on civility and respect, is the public’s opportunity to let me know, first hand, what they need from City government.”

Jim, Please have the SPD in attendance for those who don't know how to act. I think this is a great idea but I not all will behave professionally.

What is there to talk about. We've been talking for years. Those who break crime love it when we talk, because they realize nothing will happen.

Stop talking and fix this problem --- damit.

I sincerely hope it is Shanie. She has to realize that the community she is representing by her district is really affected by this situation. Please Shanie, we are begging you to take the right stand. You will be a hero for all of Salisbury. Thanks.

He's talking about Comegys and his bright idea of fixing the problem by throwing money at it.

Both meetings it should be. Here we have the opportunity to not only express our displeasure on the front steps, but to voice them, as well as enter discourse about those things. The more we know, and the more we volunteer, the better we can get to where we need to be.

This is something that the Barrie Tilghman administration would not have tolerated or offered. What would have happened is a press conference (Albero not invited) to deny a problem, to support current behaviors and to discredit and defame everyone who had any other ideas.

I think this is a breath of fresh air. Sorry that people don't see it as coming fast enough (as in fast, fast, fast), but it's not something that can happen overnight; it's so much bigger than that.

A little faith, people.

Regardless of how you feel about Joe and this site, its has made a difference. Posting the news of events that usually go unnoticed or quickly forgotten make a difference. You wont hear about crimes as quickly or get a chance to express yourself on other media outlets. The efforts of Joe and the ability to comment have gotten the city officials ear. Even Mr Comegys has seen the light and finally admitted that crime is out of control. Keep the pressure on and we will take our city back. Good work everybody.

Why don't you just be a leader and take charge and stop Hiding behind the public! We'll be talking on the street Tea Party Style!

I know this one is to focus on the crime situation- and for good reason. At some point, I'd like to hear some dialogue about the water and sewer costs. We live in the county (one street over from the city line) but have city water and sewer. Our water bill, every three months, is $230.00. And we are rarely home- as in not running water all day long. We've been told that the county residents with water and sewer hook-up pay at a higher rate. It doesn't make sense that we have to pay a $1000 per year to flush the toilet and take showers.

Excuse me, Mr Ireton. I believe the Sheriffs Dept offered help on the crime that we are dealing with and you said NO< WE DO NOT NEED YOU. You are catering to the Chief of police because he does not want to be embarrased. You and HE are an embarassement to our city. ( Sorry for the spelling) You only care about you and Chief Webster and whatever reputation you think you might have.. I believe that, WE, as, Citizens of Salisbry AND TAX PAYERS, we need to take our city back on our own. I hope you are a better TEACHER THAN YOU ARE A LEADER. We no longer have any faith in you as a leader. I bet you do not respond!

Does it take a meeting to show displeasure of our community? Does it take a meeting for full awareness of all the crime happening in Salisbury?

Quit playing the "smoke and mirrors" game and take action steps to correct the problems we face everyday.

Ireton is moving slowly but he is moving. Do you all forget already he is opening up the sub-stations again? Support a little and give him some ideas but throwing tomatoes will only get you spaghetti sauce.

Joanie Baker, no, the Chief of Police turned down the Sheriff. When the Mayor heard this, he called the Sheriff and asked for help himself.

The Chief need to GO!

Justin, I think it does. Sadly. Just my opinion, but Ireton probably would have fired the sap already if it weren't for the three Webster cronies on the council. Who wants to work with someone you fire but are forced to keep because of three dunderheads?

Give Ireton credit. People can have their public rally, then come out of the dark and cold and vent where it really counts.
