Carjacking Suspect Arrested By WPD

Location of Incident: Hess Gas Station, 5801 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County

Date and Time of Occurrence: June 10, 2009, at approximately 11:16 p.m.

Suspect(s): Darryl Nesbitt, 33, of Wilmington, Delaware

Resume: Just before midnight last night, Troopers were called to the Hess Station on Kirkwood Highway in reference to a car jacking.

In this case, the victim, a 32 year old Wilmington man, advised that he was pumping gas when a male subject walked up to him and began harassing him for a ride. The victim stated that suspect wished to go to Wilmington and would like to be dropped off at a police station. The victim agreed to provide the ride and went so far as to check the suspect for weapons before allowing him to sit in the car.

When the victim went to pay for the gas, the suspect jumped into driver's seat and took off with vehicle- the keys were still in the ignition. The victim ran after the vehicle, hanging onto side in hopes of getting the suspect to stop. The victim let go and the suspect drove off onto Kirkwood Highway.

The investigating officer immediately flagged the vehicle as stolen in the state’s computer system and officers began to check the area.

At about 6:00 a.m. this morning, a Wilmington Police Patrol Unit found themselves behind the suspect vehicle. A computer check revealed the car was stolen. A traffic stop ensued and the suspect pulled over on North Harrison Street and 4th Street. The driver was identified as Darryl Nesbitt. He was turned over to the State Police who successfully linked him to the earlier carjacking. He was transported back to Troop 6 for processing.

Darryl Nesbitt was formally charged with Carjacking (felony) and issued a $1,000.00 secured bond. He was transported to the NCC Sheriff’s Office so that Mr. Nesbitt could also answer to two active capiases he had for he arrest.

The victim was not injured and his car returned to him.
