Why Is Maryland Broke?

Because they waste millions of dollars on projects just like this one because guys like Gary Comegys think it's important to have sidewalks where no one walks and no sidewalks where people do walk.

I travel Business Rt. 50 almost every single day and quite frankly I can't recall ever seeing anyone walk on the grass or anywhere along Rt. 50 with the exception of Downtown.

Governor O'Malley reads this Blog. We don't think it's necessary Governor, do you?

The sidewalk in great and I am glad to see it. Drive by around 3pm on a school day and you'll see lots of kids using it.

I thought businesses or establishments were mandated by public works at least in this County to install curbing.

it's about time they put sidewalks in. What a great public safety project.

there are ALOT of people that walk in that area. sidewalks there are a great safety addition.

Im with 9:16, there are tons of kids that walk to wi-hi and wi-middle, so yes the sidewalks are absolutely necessary! Its too dangerous driving on rt. 50 with kids crossing all over it trying to get to school.

They need sidewalks in this area, with all the kids that walk up and down this area trying to get to school. I think this is very necessary as someone that lives in the area.

The kids leaving the school don't even use the crosswalks, what makes you think they're gonna use these new sidewalks?
I don't think so!

I have to totally disagree with you 2 cents. I live in this area and you don't. Those side walks are not needed and they are a total waste of tax dollars. They are also hurting the environment by cutting down hundreds of trees. Those kids don't need a side walk on the high way they need a safe cross walk at the intersections. It is extremely rare for anyone to need a sidewalk on a highway. That area is not a residential area so it is obviously not a good location to spend money for sidewalks. Most people drive these days so there goes your theory on many people walking. My job keeps me on the road and I travel that area numerous times a day and never see "ALOT" of people walking that area. Even if there were I think the sidewalks could wait. The kids need to be educated on where to cross the streets anyway. There are 2 crossing guards at Rt. 50 and Ward Street and the majority of the students cross at Rt. 50 and Davis Street. I think the parents and the school have a responsibility to educate the students on properly crossing the high way. I have seen kids get hit by cars several times at Rt. 50 and Ward Street. They just stand in the middle of the highway and then dart in front of cars. The economy is bad and this money could have been spent in better ways. How about a tax break?

I think the theory of safety for school kids is great but this is a highway and they should cross where there are crossing guards and then to their home or school. Look at the "Tunnel" they made for SU students by Hardee's...they don't even use it. and shouldn't you know how to cross a road by the time you are in Jr high school or college. Please stop wasting money . It could be better used on roads that have pot holes etc. Sidewalks on Rt 50??? Please!!!!!!

I certainly can tell you where side walks are needed
- East College Avenue between Bennett High School and Snow Hill Road! I used to live on College Avenue and Bennett students were always walking through my yard. Of course I did not mind because I'd rather them not get hit by cars from walking in the roadway. The need is clearly present, my yard was rutted from everyday foot traffic. Unfortunately, sidewalks will never happen there because the County does not care enough about the safety of students walking the streets to schools. It will probably take somebody getting killed...

"they should cross where there are crossing guards"

Well how do you expect them to get to where the crossing guards are without a sidewalk?

love the sidewalk there! About time!

Kids don't use sidewalks. They would rather walk in the middle of the street and dare you to make them move. If you don't believe me drive on Prince St. and Roger St. when Bennett lets out.

Joe, your pictures clearly show there is no need for sidewalks. I have looked at them over and over again and see no houses. WTF

If anything, the sidewalks might encourage bicycle use. Salisbury should start considering other forms of transportation besides the automobile, and these sidewalks could be a great start.

Marty says it's necessary if the right people get the no-bid contracts.

8:30 PM

If any bicycles are seen on that sidewalk you can bet your sweet butt that it will be stolen. You have to remember that area is GHETTO!

also the sidewalks are needed so most of the ones living near the post office can have safe walk over to pic up the check on the 1st

Jules you are on to something there. LMAO, but the majority of those won't already live on that side of the highway. Also they won't be walking because they are suffering from Food Stamp Poisoning.

News flash Jules, your government stopped sending checks eons ago. Money is now deposited on a bank card type deal. But, is that to say that people of lower economic status do not deserve to walk on a sidewalk. I sure hope you are not a decision maker for anyone.
