I want to give a special thanks to former Mayor Barrie Tilghman, Council People Gary Comegys, Louise Smith & Shanie Shields for voting to allow all this crap to freely flow through storm drains without any filtration and help me capture these unbelievable wildlife photos.Without their help I could have never achieved such great shots and deliver to hundreds of thousands of you viewing this Blog and Googling the Wicomico River to view such beauty coming from Salisbury Maryland.
Your legacy will live on forever through these photos and I just want to be so bold as to take credit for being the photographer recognized for such images.
Now I think I'll head over to the WWTP that's failing after $82,000,000.00 was BLOWN to see just what kind of other FLOAT ABLES I can find in the Wicomico River there too.
To the new Mayor Jim Ireton, we can certainly understand why you have such a desire to CLEAN UP the Wicomico River. I hope these photos will wake up the Salisbury Taxpayers just how bad things are around here. Yes Jim, we know this was laid in your lap by the former Mayor.

Actually this is part of Barrie's effort as mayor to save the City's money. If they took this stuff to the County landfill, there would be a "tipping fee" of a humongous amount!
What is it going to take for our local government to get serious about this problem?! You can't swim around here anymore, you certainly shouldn't eat any fish you catch out of these waterways.
Honestly, if they'd just get serious about it we could nip it in the bud post haste. Get someone out there in a boat to scoop this debris up, at least try to make a dent and prettify this portion of the river. It's all so disgusting and truly a squandering of our natural resources. We should all be ashamed, our government for its lack of effort and ourselves for being lazy litterbugs.

A few weeks ago there was a bit on the rivers in China. This look very close tho one of those pictures.

I remember in the 80's under mayor Martin they had a small boat assigned to the city Marina, They would go out every day and fill the boat with refuse floating in the river. A nasty job but it did work, unfortunately you will never totally eliminate all the trash. I remember seeing that boat so full of trash the operator would barely fit in it.
And we are the animals with the brain and conscience huh.
That is so gross. No doubt something needs to be done.

I usually look forward to the wildlife photos of the day. These pictures should make all of us want to do whatever we can to make the river a safe and clean place for our wildlife to live. This is a disgrace to the former administration. It's obvious that she didn't care about anything or anyone. She had her own agenda. So do Comegy's, Smith and Shields. I hope Comegy's and Smith will be history after the next election.
Go down to Market Street Inn. It's a wonderful place with a beautiful view of dowtown. UNLESS you decide to look down at the river.
The river should be one of Salisbury's treasures. There are so many public places where it can be enjoyed. EXCEPT for the filth.

Thank you for posting this Joe. This is evident of how disgusting our city is thanks to Dinglebarrie and her minions. We have our job cut out for us and we need to start with the slumlords. They are the ones that created this problem by turning Salisbury into a slum and destroying neighborhoods. They are the problems for over development which places a burden on our infrastructure such as the roads, WWTP, police, fire, EMS, public works, etc. Run the Slumlords and developers out of town and take the ghetto transients with them.
That is really sad to see the trash in the river. We all should be up in arms about this. The money that this council has approved to spend on projects that are not needed is down right disgusting.The river is polluted and the infra structure is in a poor condition. The last 11 years of this MAYOR and elected officials have ruined the City of Salisbury.It is dirty and the streets need paving. Good luck Mayor Ireton in trying to fix this. Comegy's,Smith and Shields get a grip and start being pro active. Barrie is gone help our new Mayor. the people have spoken from this past election..

I say rebuild the Dam and allow Humprey's lake to reclaim her former banks. We'll demolition Salisbury and try the effort ao again. This time we'll try and get it right.

I'll make a deal with you. I have a boat that we can both use, but, we'll need some kind of barge to pull behind it to get rid of the large amount of the debris shown in the photos.
I just want a prominent attorney to step forward to help fight City Hall when we submit our Bill for the clean-up efforts. By my estimation it will take us both at least a week.
All of this stuff is there because it was not disposed of properly. Littering is not considered a big deal here, it is almost an Eastern Shore tradition. I am a home- grown Eastern Shoreman, and have been disgusted for years about this issue. I volunteer many hours a years picking up someone else's mess...on the roadsides and even in waders pulling old tires, appliances, and God knows what else from our creeks and streams. When was the last time anyone was ticketed for littering? It would be interesting to see the Sheriff Dept. and State Police stats on that. When was the last time any of you call ed in a tag # when you saw someone in the act? Sure we can try and embarrass our elected officials into cleaning some of it up, but it will just be back tomorrow until we increase enforcement, and also get into the schools with an educational program to break the cycle.
I may be wrong but isnt there technology that can prevent and or repair this type of problem? I quess the real question is why its not being used. To expensive or just the powers that be dont care, or both.

Let's face it.
Filters cost money, and they will reduce the amount of trash that meets the river. Reduce, not eliminate.
The rain we saw the other day (what, four inches in 30 minutes?) washed stuff right off the roadways and poorly conceived asphalt parking areas directly adjacent to the river. Bad planning at the expense of the river.
And then there are the outflow pipes that are as yet undiscovered, which have been contributing sewage and runoff for decades.
Again, money is a big issue. The Tilghman administration ignored the river for its entire life, kowtowing instead to developers who only magnified the problem with more asphalt (see the condos on the river, the Brew River lot, etc.)and silt runoff from construction.
It's a huge problem, one that's not even close to having been addressed over the past 11 years.
The next four, while not eliminating the products of the ignorance of Tilghman, et al, will take a bite out of it, but don't look to swim in or eat a fish caught from those waters.
Help IS on the way. But nobody here is a magician. Look for gradual change to come and exercise some patience.
And while you're at it, don't be afraid to share what information you have with the Ireton administration. Some of the best ideas come from the least likely places.

I was heading across the small drawbridge to Skipjacks to get some crabs and could smell it. I dont think it was the sewage plant I think it was the river. Sad sad sad.
Anon 11:07 has it right. Look around everywhere else, many of the good ol shore born/raised here cant even pick up the trash in their own yard(redneck living at its finest). Do you think they will think twice whether or not to litter? Not to mention the overall lower education/poverty level that is ever present in the downtown area. Those are the same types that litter and have no regard for anything other than themselves. Its a different world around here.
This is a really sad thing to see. Littering is a big problem around here and people don't seem to care if you see them. I frequently see young people walking and they just throw their wrappers/trash and keep on walking. I live on a curve in a neighborhood and constantly have to clean bottles, cans and trash out of my ditch because people just throw it out the car window. Last night I was at Brew River and as I drove there, I was looking at the river. I saw all this trash and thought with the view and the smell why would anyone want to dine out on the decks of riverfront restaurants? Maybe the businesses along the river need to join others in pushing to get the river clean.
The next thing you know, it will catch on fire.

Well maybe that would explain why a certain library area restaurant had, like, -3 patrons while I visited this weekend......Gee, I didn't even noticed the fecal remnants while I was there at night-but I do now..that is shameful...people tried to give this place a chance during graduation week, and such, and it just gets exponentially worse every year..have I said shame yet??

I worked for the city few years ago.
When they hired me they ask me if i was afraid of water, i replied no; i ask why did you ask me that.
Well we had a boat that went up and down the river to pick trash up.
I said i would love that job.
They said the boat had sunk and they where going to replace it.
That was the first and last i ever heard anything about it.
IT would not have cured all but it would have helped.

Please get informed. I lived two miles from a county landfill when it burned every day. It is just not the tires, what about the chemicals released when plastic and the inks in paper are burned. My eyes and throat used to burn. The recycle bins are FREE! And over two thirds of what many throw on the roadsides and in the streams could be easily recycled. But, in their attempt to save the $35 sticker fee, they spend time and gas to load the stuff in their car or pick-up and drive it out into the country somewhere to dump it. That's just dumb. So I say step up enforcement, and in addition to a fine, put the offenders on clean up detail for at least eight weekends.
Nasty....and I take my children tubing out in the river....YUCK....

People are just nasty and do not care-I have seen people on foot who just throw their soda cans and food wrappers right on the ground in plain sight.It is all over the Shore,in every town and backroad community.I would LOVE to see police start enforcing littering laws as aggressively as they do "click it or ticket".Give out enough fines,people will pick their trash up.
And it isnt just Salisbury,ride down through Crisfield sometime-even with a street sweeper running daily in town,theres trash in the gutters again by noon.The most disgusting thing I have seen is dirty diapers on the ground.Makes you wonder how people live at home behind closed doors.
