Will Citizens Actually Boycott Local Businesses Over Election Signs?

"February 2, 2009

Burnett White Tire and Auto Care
412 East Main Street
Salisbury, MD 21804

Attn: Dawn Tilghman

Dear Ms. Tilghman,

I was dismayed to see a Gary Comegys For Mayor sign posted at your place of business. Please be advised that I, despite being a longtime customer, cannot give you any further trade while that or any other Comegys advertising is associated with your business. Be aware also that I will continue to boycott Burnett White until the Salisbury election season is over, will permanently take my business elsewhere if Comegys is elected, and will, regardless of the outcome of the election, consider my customer relationship with you as tainted.

Please inform other business owners who support the continuation of the Tilghman adminstration by any visible means that I, as well as many others will be exercising my right to shop or not shop where I please, for whatever reason I please. At this time, I am definitely not pleased.

I would divulge my name, but from personal experience, I know that the tentacles of the Barrie Tilghman administration reach far, wide and deep, and that my business and standing in the business community would be adversely affected if I were to identify myself.

Very sincerely yours,

A (former) customer"

I agree with this letter and whoever wrote it. I've decided that I'm going to write a few, too.
The Tilghman Machine must be shut down. To vote for Comegys is to vote to continue life under Barrie.

As much as I hate not to support local businesses, I'm drawing the line and sending out some letters of my own. Enough is enough.

During election times, our business will NOT put out ANY candidate's signs for this reason.
I don't feel the business owners should do such a thing even without the threat of a boycott of their business.
To me, it just doesn't look right. It automatically takes on the look of corruption within the business community, which we ALL know is there in Salisbury.
I really thought Dawn was smarter than this!

I'm with you! Now, where did I put those stamps?

I've had it with the Comegys signs all over businesses too. I'm not going to eat at Dayton's or get a pizza from Route 12 Pizza or buy tires from Burnett White any more. They've showed their true colors. Sorry especially about Dayton's -- it's a good place to eat.

What's the harm of putting out a sign for a candidate you believe in? Gary Comeges has done more for this town than anyone and he should be the next mayor!

Anonymous said...

Comegys is a typical politician. He sits on the P&Z commission as the rep for Salisbury and instead of following the law he votes his own opinion and is arrogant doing so. Then after the meeting he can be heard outside in the hall bragging about his vote. He is disgusting and isn't an example of a good public servant.

I stopped dealing with Burnett White years ago.....Dawn runs the show and doesn't treat employees or customers very well so this sign being there at that business proves my point.

Anonymous said...

Count me in. I'm spending my money elsewhere.

You are kidding us, right? Maybe you should read yesterday's post about Comegys, including the comments. Another thing - you might spell his name correctly.

Looking at the signs around town for Comegys, it's too bad that we can't boycott the developers and the landlords. Or can we?

You betcha we will. Anybody that has the visibility that those businesses do and the obvious desire to keep "business as usual" in Salisbury has to have its reins pulled in. Bubba as mayor?!??? Are you serious??

Anonymous said...

Joe, I hope that you can post the names of the businesses that have Comegys signs out front or in their windows. That way we'd know which ones to stay away from.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if S&W Body Shop has a Comegys sign out or not. What I do know is Bill Shirey backs Bubba 110%. I also know that body work done on wrecked city vehicles are sent there for repair. Why isn't this work put out for bid? I'm sure Eurshall Miller, Expert Collision, Johns Auto Body and all the others would like to have the opportunity to bid the work. Nope, it's handed to S&W. Why? Because Bill Shirey and Gary Comegys are buddies, THATS WHY.

Anonymous said...

If this is true, then why not boycott all the businesses that are in bed with Gary (and, eccccch, Barrie)? Give us a list!

Anonymous said...

I guess youll be going to walmart to get your new tires. They can not support any candidates in the election. This would be a great idea since you support them over Christmas with the kettle campaign.

Anonymous said...

Well one of the first businesses that you can boycott is Gordy's Tiger Marts ,and the one one Autumn Grove Ct. These are stations owned by Gordo, and they need to be one of the first to boycott. Any business that assocaties with crooks should be on the banned list.

EarlsSister said...

Anon 11:25 are you serious? Supporting the Red Kettle Campaign and the Salvation Army has nothing to do with Walmart. It had everything to do with the Salvation Army. Where the kettles happened to be located is not a choice made by anyone other than the Salvation Army.

FYI Joe also covered other locations in the city not just Walmart and Sams. Walmart and Sams were the schedules he volunteered to help them fill because it was where the Salvation Army needed help.

AMEN! I love principled people. In a world where we don't have a lot of control, what we do have is out trade dollars. I refuse to do business with several places in Delaware because of their desire to display political signs.

Anonymous said...

LOL. You people are nuts. You all should check into the political donations that every business you shop at contributes to. I thought I'd read it all until now.

Anonymous said...

I might get my tires at WalMart, but I also might get them at any other business that doesn't support the Barrie=Gary regime.

The money collected in the kettle campaign goes toward kids' programs and other human charities, and much of it locally. Can you say the same of the charitable activities of
SAPOA, which amount to zero, even though they rake in over $80,000,000 a year in Salisbury? Oh, I forgot, they did have a program. They bought a bunch of Chinese made smoke detectors, marked up the price, donated them to the SFD for giveaway, then claimed a tax write-off, then watched as most of them were installed in the houses they owned to bring them up to code.

I'm with the most of the commenters. I'm taking my business elsewhere until the Barrie=Gary supporters get the message. And I'm willing to do it until Hell freezes over.

joe albero said...

I already purchase ALL of my tires from Sam's Club for all 14 of my vehicles.

Gary doesn't represent the people, he represents Barrie and himself. He couldn't care less what the people desire.

Anonymous said...

Well guys, FYI...Gordy is still up and running after the Krativol signs right? So are you suggesting he will fold now due to Comegys signs? Come on now get real. These people can promote anyone they choose to.

Chimera said...

He's a goober.He even looks like a crooked politician.
And he is too cozy with too many people who own overpriced underhabitable rental properties.

Anonymous said...

way to go guys, run one more local business out of business, that is the problem with america today, its the Wall-marts and the Sams clubs,

Anonymous said...

Jarred B.
Well, if all this two month effort results in running a business out of town, then they were hanging on by their nails anyway, not running a business well enough to make it in even little tough times. SAPOA and Comegys are taking every one of those little businesses for a ride when they agree to post the signs. SAPOA and Comegys don't give a rat's **s whether or not these little businesses survive, they're just using them.
Once the election's over, Gary doesn't care, as long as he's the man.

No she is not smarter than this. Less than 2 years ago she had Bubba and 2 other hand picked goons of the Mare and Chamber Pots.

Can someone tell me why that nappy headed Brad Bellachico isn't married any longer?

There is an empty house on Truitt Street, very close to Rt. 50, with one of Comegy's signs in the yard. No rental agency sign to contact if interested in renting..just his election sign.. I guess the previous renter gave permission?
The house is totally empty..no one lives there!

There are Comegys signs on most of the rental properties in the city, Bubba is the candidate of choice of SAPOA.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Bubba and Company planted that sign without permission as he has done throughout the city. He should be fined for this. All good citizens should pick up this trash and dispose of it appropriately.

Please get serious about this matter folks! The only effective response we have for the rich elites who run our local government and fire department is to boycott their business. Granted Comegys is not a rich elite. He is simply an elite. He has been tapped elite by his membership in the secret group of rich people's agenda. We must STOP these people from controlling our lives. Please boycott these people's businesses if you agree that our government and fire department have been controlled by the elites who have money. Don't let them use that money against us any longer. End their power. Stop giving them our money, and then, vote for local regular people. We know who they are.

Exactly! He is responsible for the fire department debacle. Bubba is his political mouthpiece. He controls Bubba.

The vehicles go to that shop multiple times for the same problem and the city pays the bill over and over instead of telling the to get it right.

I got my last set of tires at Burnett White and it's time for a new set, guess who ain't getting my business? Family business or not, supporting Comegys isn't doing a thing to help my family.

Anonymous said...

If you ever saw Dayton's kitchen, trust me you're doing yourself a favor by not going there anyway.

Donald Dayton is getting older and gary probably gave him the ole bubba shuffle. Expect to see bubba signs at a lot of eateries, he does eat a lot.

I agree. I have done all kinds of business with Burnette White for all of my vehicles and I currently have 3 that I buy tires and wheels for.

I have a new truck that I want to put a set of new tires and rims for the beach. Can someone tell me and the blog a reasonalble place to cater to. Be sure it isn't a Bubba Bizness.

By the way, this isn't a joke. I am very serious about this.

If you want a list of Bubba supporters just check the salisbury chamber of commerce. They support him, Barrie, Louise, Mike Dunn, Lynn Cathcart...all the crooks.

OUCH...SHE is a bad girl.

You know, Boothe Grier gave up the ghost, so maybe Carl King would do ya right...

Only thing,,, Goodyear is an American Company, most would probably want Michelins to go with their imported vehicle, being a French company...

Better yet, go get them Michelins from WalMart, and that way every penny will leave this Nation, speeding up its demise to a third world status. At least the sales tax will stick.
...Or best case, go to Carl King in Delmar, merely a hundred yards over the Delaware line. NO TAX!!! No political signage!!! Domestic rubber!!!

Brad is not even associated with Car Care anymore!
You must have a grudge against him or something.

His EX Wife is the sole owner of that facility and Brad doesn't even work there anymore.

i second that.

You people are idiots! I will put my paycheck up against yours when this is all said and done and not ONE of these business's will close because you choose to not patronize them. Any grabbers? I thought not!
