From Anon:
"Congratulations to Coach Berkman for being the "winningest" NCAA men's lacrosse coach of any division!! "Yea, but it's a whole lot easier if you refuse to move your team to Division I, where they belong.Berkman likes to win. I guess you can't blame him if he refuses to face real competition from Division I teams."
This is taken directly from the beast known as the NCAA from their official website http://www.ncaa.org/.
"In August 2007, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors used its emergency authority to adopt Proposal No. 2007-10-- NCAA Membership-- Division I Membership Moratorium. The proposal created legislation that for a four-year period beginning August 9, 2007, no institution may begin the Division I provisional or reclassification membership process (including the exploratory process), nor shall an institution begin the multidivisional membership reclassification process or petition to create a new single sport or multisport conference to be elected to Division I conference membership.
As such, NCAA Division I is not accepting any membership applications at this time. For additional information regarding this issue, please refer to the frequently asked questions document or contact NCAA Membership Services at 317/ 917-6222."
"Q: May an institution reclassify from NCAA Division III to Division I?
A: No. Current rules would require a Division III institution to initially reclassify to
Division II prior to reclassifying to Division I."
The NCAA is completely bound by rules, no matter how mundane or inconsequential the rule is. The process is not over night, and I could write a thesis on how and how long it takes to move a school or a single sport to D1 from D3. I do not have that time right now.
As for your original comment, the moratorium makes everything a moot point. Dr. Vienna in the athletic department is a brilliant man who has painstakenly made SU a better instution for athletes, athletics, and a school as a whole!
It is no fault of Salisbury that the other Conference schools have not kept up. We still have a tough schedule with the likes of Gettysburg, Washington College, and the rotation of ranked teams that we play each year. And remember teams change and have up and down years. We're still in the middle of a dynasty for lacrosse and Berkman is doing a heck of a job with recruiting to keep the influx of talent coming in and getting the job done on the practice field. SU Lax has never had this much sustained winning ever in their history with both regular and NCAA Tournament seasons.
And always in sports, to have this type of success, no matter what division is hard to do because everyone is gunning for you. How many institutions at any level and any sport have that kind of success? Not many, its hard to do! To keep that type of pace going game after game shows something about these men coming in and the Coaches. Keep it up SU!
GO GULLS!
Thanks to the NCAA for the information!

He has to win with NO athletic scholarships! He does a great job.
FF
Nick, thanks for posting the reality of Division 1 for all those dumba@@es who keep insisting that SU go D1. If they knew ANYTHING about NCAA lacrosse you would know it is EVEN HARDER to have such a strong and successful team at D3 level because you can't give ANY scholarship money, which is what it takes to get most of the top high school players in the country . Berkman finds hidden talent and develops it, he doesn't get handed the TOP HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS like Duke, Uva, Princeton do. So get your stinking facts straight people. Great job Coach Berkman, and thank you for sticking with Salisbury,k because I am sure some big name schools (D1) included have tried to hire you away, for alot more money than you get at SU!! GO GULLS!!!
Yea but when the Gulls play teams like the Little Sisters of St Mary's and beat them 30 to 0, Someone should say WHY play a team that you OUTRANK by 1000%.
Is this just for SHOW???
D-1 schools are allowed to give out full ride athletic scholarships. SU does not give out any athletic scholarships. They are not allowed. They compete at a high level with students who (for the most part) can not get athletic scholarships. That makes their success even more amazing. Most of the starters at a D-1 school are there on an athletic scholarship. Go SU!!!!
What was the excuse before the moratorium? How lame! Why didn't SU Lacrosse migrate to D1 BEFORE August 2007?
SU DOES NOT WANT TO LOSE OR FACE HONEST, REAL, COMPETITION!!
It's bad for the sport, the NCAA, and bad for college lacrosse to have a team, clearly, deliberately playing below it's play-level.
Why can't you morons understand--you can't just "be Division !" cause you want to or cause you squish the competition. If you continually are a powerhouse at the D3 level it is more about coaching than anything else, Big blue chip D1 lax programs ALWAYS get the cream of the crop to pick from, they start in most of these kids sophmore years, D3 coaches get the kids who have for some reason have been unnoticed or couldn't afford to participate in the exclusive and expensive travel circuit that gets you seen for recruitment--why the heck are you people not realizing that it takes much more caoching alent at D3 than at D1? Why isn't a 30-0 loss a reflection of a crappy coach an program and not outstanding effort by players and SU coaching?
It takes an athletic department that knows what it is doing to take advantage of the benefits Division 1 athletics offers. If the Coaches and Athletic Director do not do their jobs then it is their fault!
Just because you are a certain division does not mean that you are automatically are going to be good. D1 does not necessitate that your teams are all going to be good. Take Duke for example, excellent basketball program and pitiful football. Nough said!
If'n "it" ain't broke, DON'T fix it.
Is not there a division II?
So for Ohio State, Florida, Duke, North Carolina, LSU, UCLA, and teams like that they have to play professional teams instead of weak D1 schools and not beat teams up by 40 points?
