One Year Ago Today
One year ago today I received a telephone call from the Maryland State Police asking for our help. They had come upon a wild deer that appeared to be injured but they couldn't get close to it. Each time they attempted to get close it would run away from them.
My Wife Jennifer and I immediately took off to the scene whereas I had never seen what you have just seen in the photos above. It takes a VERY special person to be able to simply walk up to a wild animal, comfort it and then take it into your arms and many of us stood there in awe as Jennifer did just that.
We kept trying to tell the Mayor of Salisbury just how special this 18 year veteran/Vet Tech was at the Salisbury Zoo but the Mayor chose Jim Rapp over Jennifer and now all of you see the end results. Rapp is gone as well as each and every individual that treated Jennifer poorly while she was employed there.
Nevertheless, this was a very special day for me personally. Sadly, the deer was badly injured and could not survive in the wild and we had to humanely euthanize the animal. At least it went peacefully and didn't get hit by a car and injur someone and or their family.
That's pretty cool though, isn't it?

Well, Joe, you have the comfort of knowing that you have an incredible wife, and that a lot of people in MD and the surrounding area see how special and talented Jennifer is. Now, tell me, how long did it take her to grow her hair out that long????
Teacherlady. Jen has been growing that hair long since she was a little girl, running things in our household. We called her the First Sgt. since she would boss the other girls in our family like a First Sgt. IUn fact she is not the only Goetz girl with long hair, right Jen?
A. Goetz
Despite a-holes who say nasty things about the animals you rescue not surviving, fact is, MOST wild animals rescued do NOT survive.
The animal, who ran from others, obviously could sense the gentleness in your wife. Animals know. They just do.
And your wife also had the knowledge to know how to approach the deer.
I'm sorry it didn't make it, but man oh man, how nice that it was able to pass from this life without any more suffering and its final time with spent with a tender touch of comfort.
I don't know you or your wife, but please let her know, some of us can see her gift and are grateful for it.
THANK YOU!
So you know, I was with that deer till the very last second. I was petting him on the head while they administered the drugs to put her down. She looked me in the eyes the entire time and honest to God, I know and she knew the peace she was finally getting. She had suffered for far too long. More than likely her Mother was killed/shot by a hunter. She had poor vision in one eye and while her Mother was with her she could help her find food. Once her Mother was gone, things changed for the worse and she could not survive.
As much as we don't ever want to put an animal down, this was necessary. I'll add, many times when we're called in, it's because other rescue groups cannot do so. Think about it. There are millions upon millions of deer out there and certain groups couldn't care less if the animal survived or not. The State Police called two of them and they never arrived. That's when they called us and we were there in 10 minutes.
Your words are very kind and I'll close with this. Jim Rapp, the former Dorector of the Salisbury Zoo called the national headquarters for DNR and reported Jennifer for rescuing this animal. He demanded they do whatever they could to stop us from helping out. We fought back by telling them it was their organization that didn't show up. Finally, Rapp is gone from the Zoo and all is good now.
