Christamas Blaze

Some time around 8:00 this evening a couple was driving down Camden Ave in Fruitland and they spotted flames coming out of the side the this home.

The gentleman relentlessly pounded on the door while they called 911 in the hopes of making sure if there was anyone inside they would become aware of the fire. Fortunately there was no one home and the Fruitland Police, (5) arrived on the scene while an Off Duty Salisbury Fire Fighter, (John Gerity) heard the call over his pager and happened to be running to a store close by the get some milk. One of the Fruitland Police Officers and John broke through the front door and were actually able to put out the fire with Fire Extinguishers BEFORE the Fruitland Fire Department arrived.

The interesting part, (so I'm told) was that Station 16 from Salisbury arrived at the same time Fruitland did. Keep in mind this is an all Volunteer Fire Department in Fruitland as well as this being Christmas Day, so hats off to all involved, especially John & the FPD. A special thanks also goes out to the couple who noticed the fire and attempted to do all they could to make sure no one was inside. I'm told the gentleman who was knocking on the door was a bit overwhelmed with smoke but is fine.

Id like to say Kudos to Fruitland and Salisbury for a quick response. I was listening to the scanner last night and heard them go on scene with a working fire.
What bothers me is that the off duty fire fighter with no gear, who is unable to respond on calls at this time, was busting in doors attempting to put a working fire out. This was with an extinguisher with not back up with no hose line. Was he trying to make a widow of his wife and make his kids fatherless? Freelancing can get you hurt, you all need to be more careful in what you do.

We can all thank God no one was home. We can also be thankful for the emergency personnel that responded to this loss on Christmas Day and everyday.

"Id like to say Kudos to Fruitland and Salisbury for a quick response."

Are you kidding me? Salisbury arrived the same time Fruitland did, you call that quick?

"What bothers me is that the off duty fire fighter with no gear"

He did have gear. Are you jealous just because one fire fighter got all the attention?

Anonymous said...

Since Salisbury has a duty crew in-station, and Fruitland has to respond from home- yes, that was a quick response from both depts.

i think that it was nice of the off duty salisbury guy to even bother going...he didnt have to he was at the store for milk he could have just walked right out to his vehichle and left and went home. i think everyone needs to see that sometimes it doesnt matter if you have so called help with you or not he had his gear with him..but wait what about the police officers that ran in...did they have a hose or a back up???? no so why just bash the firemen bash them too while your at it. if it was your house wouldnt you have wanted him and the police officers to make sure that you werent in there and if so try to save you...or do you not care???

FIRST,
I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE TIME TO EXPRESS SYMPATHY FOR THE FAMILY THAT WAS PUT OUT OF THERE HOME DO TO THIS FIRE. IT IS ALWAYS AN UNFORTUNATE TIME ,ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF YEAR.

2ND,
I WAS PERSONALLY ON THIS CALL, AND I'LL MAKE A FEW COMMENTS ON THE TRANSITION OF WHAT EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT, JUST TO CLARIFY SOME OF THE ISSUES PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT.

1ST FRUITLAND ARRIVED "NOT THAT IT MATTERS" JUST PRIOR TO SALISBURY.
ESTABLISHED AN INTIAL WATER SUPPLY. THERE WAS A SLIGHT ISSUE WITH THE LAY WHEN IT CAME OFF, BUT WAS HANDLED IMMEDIATELY ,AND CAUSED MINIMAL DELAY. FRUITLAND AND SALISBURY ENGINES PROCEEDED INTO THE SCENE AND BEGAN WORK. ADD'T WATER SUPPLY WAS LAY'D BY E-16 AND R302. YES 3 WATER SUPPLIES...GOOD JOB GUYS....

POLICE OFFICERS AS WELL AS A SALISBURY F/F "MR. J.GERITY" YES MADE AN ATTEMPT TO PUT THE FIRE OUT ON THE OWN W/ A "FIRE EXTINGUISHER".

THE PROBLEM HERE WHICH I'LL STAND BEHIND 100% IS:

THIS F/F "J.GERITY" AND THE OFFICERS PROCEEDED TO ENTER THIS "WORKING FIRE" W/O THE APPROPRIATE GEAR ,AND TRIED TO PUT THIS FIRE OUT..SO, HE "J.GERITY" HAD TURN-OUT GEAR ON WOOP-TEE-DOO...THAT'S NOT SAVING YOUR LUNGS NOW IS IT.....NOPE...THAT'S CALLED STUPIDY...THATS WHY THEY MAKE "SCBA"...SMOKE CONDITIONS WERE NOTICEABLE AT THE OTHER END OF CAMDEN AVE OPPOSITE OF THE FIRE...THATS WHY ONE OF THE OFFICERS HAD A SMOKE INHALATION PROBLEM..

AND GUESS WHAT, THEY KNEW NO ONE WAS INSIDE BECAUSE IT WAS CONFIRMED BY THE NEIGHBORS WHO SEEN THEM LEAVE EARLIER ,LET ALONE THE FAMILY HAD SHOWED UP A FEW MINUTES LATER AND THAT RE-CONFIRMED IT.THE INTERIOR CREWS WERE NOTIFIED PROBABLY LESS THAN 2 MINUTES AFTER ENTERING THE FIRE OF THIS. CREWS STILL INTIATED A PRIMARY SEARCH AS THERE TRAINED TO DO. FIRE WAS CONTAINED AND EXTINGUISED IN A BED ROOM ON THE A&D CORNER.

AND JUST TO YOU SHOW ANOTHER LACK OF COMMON SENSE ON THIS F/F PART ,THIS FIRE FIREFIGHTER ADVISED THE CREW THE BEST ACCESS WAS FROM THE B SIDE OF THE STRUCTURE, WHEN THE FIRE WAS ON THE A & D SIDE. THE FRONT DOOR WAS THE CORRECT ACCESS POINT, MAKE A RIGHT WHEN ENTERING THE DOOR AND THERE'S THE BEDROOM.... WOW....
BUT WE GAVE HIM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT ,AND ENTERED HIS WAY TO LATER LEARN OF THE BEST AND EAISEST ACCESS POINT.

AND, I'LL SAY THIS..THE OFFICER ON E16 ADDRESSED THE ISSUE AT HAND W/ THIS F/F ABOUT HIS INAPPROPRIATE RESPONSE AND LACK OF GEAR.

AS FAR AS THE RESPONSE GOES..IT'S A NO BRAINER..SALISBURY HAS A DUTY CREW. NO MATTER IF THEY GO NORTH,SOUTH,EAST,OR WEST TO ASSIST THERE GOING TO GET THERE EITHER FIRST OR WITHIN A MINUTE OR SO AFTER. YOU CANT BASH ANY DEPARTMENT THAT HAS TO WAIT FOR ITS HELP TO COME. ITS CALLED "VOLUNTEER". FRUITLAND STAFFED THE FIRST ENGINE W/ 7 , A SQUAD W/ 2 , 2ND ENGINE WITH 5,AND A TRAFFIC UNIT W/ A COUPLE OF PEEPS. THAT'S PREETY GOOD FOR A VOLUNTEER DEPT WOULDN'T YOU THINK ESPECIALLY ON XMAS..

AND TO ANON:907
THERE'S NO JEALOUS HERE AS FAR AS SOMEONE GETTING THE ATTENTION. I DON'T THINK ANYONES OUT FOR THAT U THATS MY OPINION. THE ONLY ATTENTION HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN WAS ALL THE F/F'S VISITING HIS CASKET AT HIS FUNERAL FOR MAKING A DUMB ASS DECISION TO TRY AND GO INSIDE A WORKING FIRE ,KNOWING THERE WAS NO ONE INSIDE. THE O'L SAYING SAYS:

"RISK ALOT TO SAVE ALOT"

THIS WAS NOT THE CASE...........

ANYWAYS TXS FOR LISTENING TO MY THOUGHTS....

First of all why bash on a guy who did what he did and he did gear up i was there and watched him, right out of his truck, he is a FF and i watched FPD run up to the house also WITH NO GEAR, he did what any other caring person would have done, he was there first and making sure no one was in the house making sure it wasn't a Washington st tragedy. So who ever gets on here and bashes GERITY for caring and who cares if he (wasn't able to respond to fires at this time) who cares at least he was there on his time and on Christmas day. so leave the guy alone and give him some credit, and SFD and FFD showed up at the SAME time.
and give credit to the guy who was banging on the doors when Gerity and FPD arrived.

Nice excuse for why this off-duty fireman was there. Using the excuse of geting milk is totally far-off. Considering almost all of the stores were closed due to the holiday. He was in the wrong for doing what he did. Where was the accountability for him? Units were on scene very quickly and went to work performing the duties that are required. The first in Medic Unit started a search of the residence and found nothing. They did so with the protection of breathing apparatus and being with a partner. I give the fruitland pd props for attempting to do the right thing and assist. Freelancing is not accepted in the fire service and certainly is looked down upon in Salisbury. From what I heard this fireman was in the hospital later that evening hacking and coughing his lungs out. Smooth move and this is why brathing apparartus is used. The days of leather lungs are over.

Anonymous said...

MILK! Thats the oldest story in the book. He lives across the highway on S. Division St. Just where does he get his milk ? There are some guys who I would trust to enter a structure with no gear and know they would fair well. This is not one of them. I've seen him chasing fires in the Heart To Heart ambulance before. Glad nobody was hurt.

joe albero said...

Maybe the satore close to his home was closed on Christmas day and the store he was headed to was the only close one by that was open?

Quit ragging on a man who did what he felt was right. IF there was a family passed out inside the home, what would you be saying then? I was there, it wasn't a raging fire, (like you want to make it sound) and my lungs were hurting just by burning boxes in a controlled fire yesterday, so quit your bellyaching.

Anonymous said...

If your lungs were burning due to the smoke from cardboard boxes imagine what it would be like going in a house on fire and breathing the smoke from all the toxic junk inside that is on fire.

With the equipment Firemen have these days there is no reason any of them should be breathing smoke and fumes at all. Thanks for helping bring that point to light.

joe albero said...

"What bothers me is that the off duty fire fighter with no gear"

I didn't bring it to light, other commenters did. Nice try though. Let me assure you of one thing. If I were on the scene and I was in this same position, I AM NOT GOING TO STAND THERE WAITING FOREVER FOR SOMEONE TO ARRIVE. You may want to imply Fruitland was there as well as 16 fairly quick but you're wrong! They both tok longer than normal as this was a Holiday and rounding up Volunteers I'm confident wasn't easy. However, I received numerous calls about this and people on the scene were very disappointed in how long it took for the Fire Departments to arrive, just the facts.

Perhaps one of you would like to state here the time the 911 call came in and the time they arrived on the scene? That would make a man out of some of you!

Again, let's all keep in mind that it was on fact Christmas Day but I don't even know why I'm saying this because they're not going to man up and post the real times anyway.

This is also one of those Posts that shouldn't even have much comment wise. I know, write this guy up like you wrote up several other Fire Fighters who were doing the right thing in an attempt to save a life yet See & Gordy have bugs up their asses to get certain people in trouble. Oh, like I don't know about that information. Lots that I hold in my back pocket until the time is right.

Anonymous said...

That was a very stupid move on Gerity's half. Anything could have happened in there. Stop trying to get a medal for stupidness. Your just trying to make the job harder for the responding crews who were properly equipped...you could have easily been overcome from the smoke and become a casualty along with the police officer. They teach you in Fire1 class that smoke contains methylethyl bad $hit. Wouldn't be the first time Gerity has done something stupid though..like take his wife back after she banged that cop.

joe albero said...

Only a PUSSY Fire Fighter would make that statement. You guys make me SICK with your BROTHERHOOD BULLSHIT!

You wonder why I would have nothing to do with ANY Salisbury Fire Department? I wouldn't be able to TRUST a single one of you to have my back. So F-You for making a statement like that!

Way to go Chiefy See, Deputy Chief Gordy and Barrie Tilghman. All of you should be thrown out for allowing your people to make such satements and I hope this Blog brings you all down publicly for allowing it.

Anonymous said...

Never say never. If you are put in this position you dont know how you will react. However, before you do, there are several points to consider.
1. Are there any neighbors or relatives telling you that someone is home?
2. Are there any cars in the driveway?
3. Is the home occupied or vacant?
4. How far away is the Fire Dept?
5. Do know approximately where the victims might be ?
6. Do you have the experience and training to pull it off without injuring yourself ?
7. Does the risk outweigh the benefit ?

It is human nature to want to help someone and most all of us would try to help. However anyone should consider these points of consideration before attempting such actions.

joe albero said...

I agree Bryan,

But let's look at the circumstances even more, if you don't mind?

The Fruitland Police were there and may not have been as privy to such direction as a Fire Fighter would be. In an atempt to make sure no one was passed out inside, (especially after the recent fire on Washington Street where 3 people didn't get out) they felt the need not to wait any longer.

Once inside, let just say things weren't as bad as originally thought and they used extinguishers to put out the fire.

I can just see where things could have progressed easily out there. I'm NOT saying what they did is right but come on Bryan, to have someone throw hard balls on the guys Wife, that's BULLSHIT! That is NOT BROTHERHOOD!

There seem to be quite a few people out there trying to critisize and although your comment makes perfect sense, that's why YOU are in the position you are and others are supposed to follow your direction. This was a bit more spontanious and someone with much less experience.

I'll close with this. That piece of shit Chief and Deputy Chief have run ALL of the level headed professional OUT of the Fire Department that were good for the Department. I can only hope that the others left with such WISDOM are treated better and they don't get rid of the entire bunch because there's NO QUESTION based around thousands of comments, the SFD is looking like shit because it is loaded with a bunch of shitty Fire Men! All customized by See & Gordy. Wait till people see what's left in about 2 or 3 years. All that wasted money too! Chew on that for a while.

It makes no difference John had turnout gear or not. The fire was small in nature at the time so he was able to keep it in check reducing the amount of damage to someone’s home. That’s what firemen do, put out fires. If the safety goobs have a problem with it tell them to pack sand. Good job John.

Perhaps there is a perception that the SFD looks like crap by some. Much of those perceptions are from some of the ridiculous statements made by by unknown posters on a variety of subjects. I cannot identify a person named anonymous or where they are from. I can see the efforts of the men and women of the SFD making a difference in the community everyday. Helping those who call for service 24 hours a day. That can be seen by anyone. Anyone can sit here and type ignorant statements all day, but real firefighters are there when it counts.
The SFD has a lot of younger members and the organization has been in a transition period for several years. Dont be fooled into thinking there aren't some level headed people still around. There are some very good firefighters coming up and before you know it they will be the leaders of tomorrow.
The performance of the SFD members are measurable and visible evryday in the field. The idiotic statements which appear from Anonymous are simply ENTERTAINMENT at best.

Anonymous said...

Joe, I agree the comment about the wife was a little to much. But as a firefighter looking at other firefighters actions, this is what I think.

1. John was wrong with going in like that. I understand he had a set of turn out gear (not sure why though it's SFD SOP that all gear remain in the firehouse unless approved by an officer.), but he had no SCBA.
Now as far as that goes... "Take a big risk to save a life." This is a statement that gets drilled in your head from day 1 of FF1. If the neighbors were there and confirmed there was no one home there was no reason to take that risk. I understand that the homeowners’ property was at stake, but not there lives. He should've waited for an engine to get there and grabbed an SCBA off that engine and told the officer he was there so accountability could have been done for him. At least at that point someone would've known he was there. Look all I'm trying to say here is don't take the risk if there is not a life to save in the structure if you don't have ALL the proper PPE. I give them both credit, they did what they though was right. BUT... With Johns training he should've known better, that’s all. Just remember...
1. SOPs are there to protect you. Follow them
2. EGH
3. WEAR ALL OF YOUR PPE
4. Take the risk when the risk is worth taking.

Stay safe all and have a Happy New Year.

Anonymous said...

This is what pisses people off, Joe. You have no clue who is making these comments about Gerity, but you make the ASSUMPTION it's other SFD members.

There used to be people in the SFD that supported you, but not anymore. Not after all the knives in the back from you.

This is Jon Gerity,

First i was at eagle express. Check the records they were open. My wife needed milk. I filled my tank at wine rack than went to eagle because wine rack did not have no milk. I went in there the cashier was crystal. Go and ask her.
I got my milk on the counter than i went to look for rolaids. While me and cashier were looking pager goes off.

I left went to the scene and saw several cars out front of house.
Second i saw police running up.
Than i saw a vehicle in the back yard.
Know the fire was on a-d corner.
So me and police officers heard from a neighbor someone was inside i did what i was taught to go in. I did my job no matter who says what i did it.

Another thing is DO YOU KNOW WHY I DIDNT ASK FOR MEDICS HELP AT SCENE????
BECUASE OF THIS BULLSHIT THAT IS WHY I WENT TO HOSPITAL AND DONE IT MY SELF.

Another thing my wife didnt bang that cop. She was raped why dont you sign your name tough guy.....

well until you sign your name on here who you are after talking crap about my wife just be happy that it wasnt your wife who got raped......

i did not want it to end up like washington street so just back off of my family

1. COMMENTS 1- 1ST OF ALL YOU WEREN'T "TAUGHT" TO GO IN BURNING BUILDINGS "W/ NO SCBA". THAT WAS YOUR "DECISION AND REACTION".
ALSO I GIVE FACTS ON HERE AND NOTHING ELSE, AND HERE IS ANOTHER ONE AND YOU CAN QUOTE THIS TO PLEASE ..."WHY WERE YOU INSIDE W/ NO SCBA ON WHILE THERE WERE ALREADY 2 FF/EMT'S INSIDE W/ FULL TURN-OUT GEAR AND SCBA DOING A SEARCH?"
THERE WAS NO EXCUSE AT ALL FOR YOU TO BE THERE INSIDE.. NO MORE QUESTIONS ASKED!!!! JOHN THESE ARE FACTS THAT CAN'T BE DENIED BY ANYONE ESPECIALLY IF YOU WERE THERE..IT WAS A NO BRAINER... I TRIED TO HOLD BACK SOME OF THE INFO SO YOU WOULDN'T GET HAMMERED ,BUT FORGET IT AFTER THAT BULLSHIT YOU WROTE TRYING TO MAKE EXCUSES. EXCUSES FOR WHAT?? THERE WERE NONE END OF DISCUSSION.

2. COMMENT 2- WHY DIDNT YOU ASK FOR HELP?? I ANSWER- IGNORANCE.
THATS YOUR STUPIDY..

ANOTHER FAMOUS QUOTE-
"STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES"

FORREST GUMP

AND LAST OF ALL,
I WILL SAY THIS, NO ONE CAN PROBABLY SAY THEY WOULDNT HAVE ACTED AS YOU CHOSE TO DO,,,"BUT" UNDER THE "CIRCUMSTANCES" OF BEING TOLD NO ONE WAS HOME(WHICH YOU STATED YOU WERE TOLD DIFFERENT), THE BIGGEST FACTOR AND MIND MAKER IS THAT THERE WERE 2 TRAINED EMT/FF'S THERE W/ THE APPROPIATE GEAR, AND SCBA ON. THEY WERE GOING IN TO DO A SEARCH AS THE INDEED DID PRIOR TO THE ENGINE ARRIVING. THIS MADE IT A WRONG MOVE AND NOT THE BEST DECISION ON YOUR BEHALF..NO IF AND OR BUTS..

I will say this. I was the first firefighter to make entry into the house as a FPD officer was standing at the side door. I asked if anyone was in the house and he said "I don't know, i cant get in cause of the smoke." That being said my partner and I made entry into the house and did a search. The house was not involved with fire due to the FPD hitting the fire THROUGH A WINDOW on the "D" side of the house with a dry chem, however the smoke was very thick in the house. Jon did not have any business in there without the proper protection on..Bottom line..He should not get a pat on the back from anyone for being stupid. This is a classic example of how firefighters die each year, because they want to be a hero. Its wrong and he should be punished for being foolish. When trained people with the "proper equipment, including SCBA" are already on the scene, there is no need for his actions.

It's time to stop beating this horse to death. What's done is done and can't be changed. Gerity honestly tried to do what was right but, he should have used scba before entering the sructure. If he did than he wouldn't have had to go to prmc. In the heat of the moment he did what he thought was right. Next time Gerity think before you act just to ensure you go home at the end of the call. Not trying to bash you just trying to help you out my friend. As a side note neither of the medic units from salisbury knew that gerity had visited the hospital last night. The mebers of the 4th platoon do not wish to have any fingers pointed at them.

typical of the environment of the wannabes in the sfd not happy unless they are always fucking with somebody. it is going to be many years before the sfd rids itself of the backstabbing hatred brought here by the delmar rednecks gordy and see. something else that is bad is they are grooming that fat guy to be just like them and he is just like them. his head is so big with power that it will explode if it gets anybigger.

I believe we call them hero's. The HIPAA regulations are in place to keep healthcare staff from spreading word of someones personal and private health information.

In the words of Paul Wilber, it is privaliged and confidental information, how many times have we seen that without it regarding someone's personal health records.

Not to disrespect anyone,

I am not asking for the fire dept to cover my hospital bill.
I went there on my own because i did not want the harrasment i am getting now.

Secondly, who says you were the first one in that is a crock of crap.

I know who you are you and a paramedic went in.

I told you where everything was layed out.

I was in at least 5-6 mins before engine pulled up. Do i want a pat on the back hell no

Just for you can get your facts straight.

Another thing FIGHTING 4

In all respect
i was being wheeled back to my room 29. When a certain fireman saw me.
Than couple mins later a paramedic and same fireman came pass my room than stopped looked in and asked why you here????

when i saw that certain fireman he was at room 24.

so those two had no business coming over than blasting it all around for i can get harrassed i did not like it nor did i think it was respectful.

Now i did not say a thing about being at the hospital to anyone because of the harrasment that i am getting well

until further

First of all this is *FruitlandAngel*

Second i am NO relation to Jon

Third i have known the family for a long time...........19 years

my e-mail is fruitland_angel@live.com

my name is Ann Marie Kunie

Jon was raised into a caring young man who would do anything for anybody.
He would risk his life to save a life...
His family would do the same.

So why dont you all just get off his case, and leave him alone

he did what was the right thing to do, and knowing him he will do it again if the situation called for it.

and another thing that was funny as shit was what Joe said about all these negative comments are just the FF's who showed up AFTER the fire was out....LMFAO. and they couldn't play with their hoses. (he didn't say that i did) but its still funny

well Jon great job and to FPD, by the way there was 4 officers there,
and the first responders with Gerity. so great job guys.

So why dont you all jsu get off of Jon's back, he isn't looking for graditude, he did what a real caring person in his situation at the time would have done.

If I understand the scenario the correctly - an off duty fireman arrived at the scene first and ran into a building without regard to his health and safety to save if not the occupants the structure itself. It this true!? What is wrong with you people? What is all this petty squabbling about? If it was my home and I knew there was an off duty fireman there I would be begging him to help. In my uneducated opinion I would think the amount of damage a fire can do in a mere five minutes would be intangibly Huge. The man should be commended and recognized for a selfless act (which rarely happens this in the day in age). All of you that condemned him or attacked his character should be ashamed of yourselves. What happened to the fireman’s creed? Does it exist there?

I keep thinking back to when I was in elementary school and all the boys wanted to grow up to be firemen. Firemen were considered brave, kind, considerate heroes. If the comments made on this blog are from his fellow firefighters it is no wonder there are no heroes left in the world. You are showing your true character and I would be ashamed to have my children want to grow up to be like you.
