Does The City Of Salisbury Need A Skate Park?

Although Barrie Tilghman throws around her weight at the Police Department trying to insist her demands be met, being the 20th most dangerous City in America, the Police just might think there are more important things to do that run off kids like this trying to have a good time. After all, (unlike Barrie Tilghman who sent her kids off to Boarding School rather than raising them) we were all kids once.

I personally think they should have a skate park that is easily accessible in a central location or easily accessed via the public transit system. I've lived in cities that had such parks and have visited these parks both in the U.S. and Canada and know they serve a need in their communities and help keep kids from skating in dangerous areas or under unsafe conditions. I actually had one of these kids fall off a wall and roll into the street where I was thankfully stopped at a red light. I see these kids nightly from my office window. Here's a need in this community that is right in front of the GOB, yet nothing is said or done about it. I attended a meeting a few months back in another community where a teenager from the community petitioned the City Council to set aside land for a skate park and help in funding one. The young man made good arguments for the park and presented his position in a very professional manner.

There still is a skateboard park - it is buried under dirt!! It is on the back edge of the civic center parking lot. Lets dig it up and kill two bird with one stone.
1) a skatepark
2) Good exersize for our county detention center residents!!!

When I see these pictures, I see kids at play. They're doing exactly what they should be doing, being a kid, having fun and not trying to cause any trouble. I worry that the attention to them in this blog will just push them out to another location and not solve the problem, or maybe even cause problems by creating hostility on the part of the kids against being banned from the GOB steps. Does anyone know anything about petitioning for or getting grant money to build such a park? I'm way over-extended right now but would be willing to help out if someone else took the lead on pursuing this.

I hope you understood the intent of this Post. I agree, these kids are doing what "most" kids USED to. The fact that they are outside getting exercise, (rather than sitting at a computer on the Internet where they don't belong sometimes) is impressive enough nowadays.

Perhaps you can speak to the Candidates running for Office and ask how they can help? After all, Gary Comegys wants to raise millions of dollars creating a Bike Trail, (mainly for adults) but the children should not be forgotten.

Perhaps a Skate Park would attract kids to a particular area where they can keep a better eye on them, rather than on top of buildings spraying paint on them and putting them at risk.

Accountability and proper management is what is needed right now in the City and NOT 100% development. Of course this is just my own personal opinion and I don't suggest that I'm right. This is just an idea and I happen to agree, the kids need a place to go. As parents we need to get them out more in a supervised environment and keep them away from being lazy and non active.

IMO, candidates are a great way to get it going right now as they too are looking for answers as to what the citizens are actually looking for in Salisbury's future.

Joe, I understand the intent of this post. I just know how things can be twisted and would hate for the kids to be kicked out of the area because it's easier than addressing the real problem of not having anyplace safe where they can practice their skateboard techniques. I would like something good to come of this. I will mention this to Terry and Tim when I see them next.

I think I still have some of those "hang ten" clothes in one of my closets too! Remember them, the ones with the two feet?
