The Beginning Of The End!

I tried to warn ALL of you that someone was going to create a new Mall and complete shopping center just up the road in Delaware where everyone can do "tax free shopping."

There is such a proposal going on right now in Laurel, DE. where they're talking about a Mall that would provide an indoor roller coaster, that's how big it's going to be.

Prepare yourselves Folks, this is going to BANKRUPT the City of Salisbury and I'm not at all playing games when I make that statement. Just think to yourself, if you only had to drive an additional 7 miles to go shopping and it was tax free, would you? Of course you would. That means all the TIFF's and do forth given out to the Developers here will be for nothing! It also means whatever business that are leasing in the current Mall in Salisbury will race to sign leases ahead of time for the new project because it makes sense! Say goodbye to the newest Mall in Salisbury because it's now going to be worthless.

Charles Jannace tried telling everyone in his Campaign, retail goes first in a bad economy and if retail goes in Salisbury, Salisbury will surely fail and crumble and that is only a few short years away.

My suggestion to all of you is, SELL NOW AND GET OUT WHILE THE GETTIN IS GOOD!

That whole thing in Laurel is nothing but a pipe dream. Get real. It isn't retail we should be worried about, it's real estate. The real estate market is worse than soft right now, and Laurel isn't exempt from that.

orientxpress,

That's your opinion but I see it differently. The real estate market in Laurel will not be effected any time soon. Should this new Mall come to Town, things will be looking up for many thousands of people with brand new jobs, unlike Salisbury.

This Post will stay in archives and we can simply look back at it a year from now and see just how wrong one of us will be.

First of all, this should not be a shock to anyone. There have been rumors of new malls all over Sussex County since the late 90s. Allegedly Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth would relocate to a parcel of land between Milton and Milford once all the stores leases ran out. Two proposals for malls in Milford (of all places) have been sported. Someone proposed a mall just west of the Del Tech Georgetown campus in the winter of 2001.

Whether this is true or not, the fact remains that the Centre at Salisbury is almost 15, 16 years old. Just one walk around the mall is a lesson is tacky early-90s design. Although it seems to be pretty busy, if I recall, the old mall was packed until people caught wind of the new mall. One day a new shiny mall with another low-brow Sears and JC Penney's will take its place. It really is only a matter of time.

There was an editorial in The Daily Times about a month ago that discussed this, but it also speculated that the circular trend in commerce would swing interest back around to the downtown plaza -- a longshot, I'd imagine.

(Which, by the way, the plaza is such a great area. It's a shame there isn't more going on down there; it has so much character, aside from that weird freudian sculpture).
