Possible Doubling Of Flush Tax Worries Some Md. Lawmakers

ANNAPOLIS A number of legislators are concerned that Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal to raise the flush tax from $2.50 to $5 a month to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay could be too much for constituents to handle, especially in a bad economy.
The flush tax, which raises funds for updates of wastewater treatment plants, as well as septic systems and stormwater management, costs each household a total of $30 a year. But O'Malley's proposal for the Bay Restoration Fund ties the fee to consumption, with $5 being the average that most people will pay per month.
Those who use less water could pay less, but high-volume users could pay up to $60 a year.

East Haven Mayor: 'I Might Have Tacos' For Dinner

As criticism of East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo's taco comment mounted Wednesday, Maturo issued another apology.
"My sincerest apologies go out to the East Haven community and, in particular, the Latino community for the insensitive and off-collar comment that I made to WPIX reporter Mario Diaz yesterday regarding the recent events affecting our community and our police department," Maturo said.
"Unfortunately, I let the stress of the situation get the best of me and inflamed what is already a serious and unfortunate situation. I regret my insensitive comment and realize that it is my job to lead by example."

A Comment Worthy Of A Post 1-26-12

"I don't think Marylanders pay too much in taxes. Of course, I live in Sussex County in Delaware where we ended up with a $3M+ SURPLUS in OUR budget.

To the ruling elite in Annapolis: Keep it up. We appreciate the business."

Obama, Brewer Have Tense Exchange In Arizona

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- President Obama and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer had what was described as an intense encounter on the tarmac after the president arrived in the Grand Canyon state on Wednesday.
Brewer greeted the president as he arrived off Air Force One, as governors often do when the president visits a state, and handed him a letter that she described as a “welcome” note to the state, and an invitation to talk about a comeback for her state.

Condoms Officially Required In Porn Filmed In Los Angeles

(CBS/AP) It's official. Porn actors must wear condoms if their movies are being filmed in Los Angeles.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed the law on Monday, and it should go into effect in 41 days.
Officials with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which lobbied for years for such a law, expressed jubilation Tuesday and said they would now turn their attention to getting a similar condom requirement adopted elsewhere.

Open Your Eyes!

Last night in the skies over Los Angeles residents could hear the distinct sound of helicopters. Nothing new right? Wrong. These weren't police helicopters, they were Black Hawks. That's right. Military helicopters. The military and the L.A.P.D. are conducting joint operations in the air and on the ground in L.A. Some journalists are calling this the first battle of the new civil war. Pay very close attention to this as the potential exists for serious and even more blatant violations of civil liberties. Before reading the article at the link below, consider the following and connect the dots.

1) Implementation of the Department of Homeland Security which was given unprecedented authority to proceed against Americans without it's actions first being reviewed by a judge.

2) Government operatives being deployed among the protestors of both the Tea Party and Occupy movement.

3) Placement of camera's throughout almost every community, highway, and intersetion in the country.

4) Notwithstanding the recent SCOTUS decision, the government had been planting GPS tracking devices on both vehicles and boats;

5) The President authorizes the execution of an American citizen on foriegn soil by use of a predator drone without due process and no emergency circumstances;

6) The President signs into law, legislation that permits the unlimited detention of American citizens without due process or access to an attorney.

Can't anyone else see a pattern here?

North Carolina Death Row Inmate Writes Letter About Life of 'Leisure'

A convicted murderer on death row in North Carolina wrote a taunting letter to his hometown newspaper about his life of "leisure" in prison and making a mockery of the legal system.

Danny Robbie Hembree Jr. was found guilty of murdering 17-year-old Heather Catterton in 2009 and was sentenced to death on Nov. 18, 2011. Hembree, 50, is on death row at Central Prison in Raleigh, N.C., but he's not looking for any pity in the letter he sent to The Gaston Gazette.

Fidel Castro Attacks 'Idiocy And Ignorance' Of US Republican Race

Fidel Castro has lambasted the Republican presidential race as the greatest competition of "idiocy and ignorance" the world has ever seen, and also criticised the news media and foreign governments for seizing on the death of a Cuban prisoner to demand greater respect for human rights.
Castro's comments came in a long opinion piece carried by official media two days after a Republican debate in Florida presented mostly hardline stances on what to do about the Communist-run island.
Cuba has become an important issue as the candidates court Florida's influential Cuban-American community in an effort to win the biggest electoral prize so far in the primary season.

Billionaire Bill Gates Calls For Increasing Taxes On The Rich: ‘That’s Just Justice’

Last night in his State of the Union address, President Obama once again urged Congress to pass the Buffett rule, noting that 25 percent of American millionairespay less in taxes that millions of families in the middle-class. Republicans were quick to dismiss his request as “the politics of envy and division.” However, multi-billionaire Bill Gates called his policy something else entirely: “That’s just justice.”
In an interview with the BBC, Gates noted “taxes are going to have to go up” and thus he’d prefer that they “go up more on the rich than everyone else.” There needs to be “a sense of shared sacrifice,” he said, adding, “right now, I don’t feel like people like myself are paying as much as we should”:

Delegate McDermott Releases Recent Gonzales Poll

Today, Eastern Shore Delegate Mike McDermott joined with the Republican Freshman Class of the Maryland House of Delegates in releasing a recent Gonzales Poll. The results show that an astonishing 96% of Marylanders believe they pay too much or the right amount of taxes, while only 4% feel they pay too little in taxes.

56% of Maryland Democrats and 80% of our state’s Republicans clearly stated they paid too much in taxes. Among male and female respondents, the numbers were very similar with 64% of men and 61% of the women polled stating they paid too much. Even in Baltimore City, one of the most liberal areas of the state, over 45% of those polled said they paid too much in taxes.

As the 2012 session rolls on, Maryland’s middle class families are on the governor’s chopping block. New limits on itemized deductions (mortgage/charity) as well as reduced personal exemptions will cost families thousands of dollars and turn many of our struggling households into crisis mode.

The O’Malley administration and the Democratic leadership in the General Assembly will pursue taxes on all internet sales. This even includes a tax on all downloaded applications for your Smart phones.

Even those seeking to shelter their investment portfolio in Gold will face a new Sales Tax on precious metal coins and bullion. Couple all of this with gasoline taxes rising 66%, and a 100% increase in the Flush Tax, it becomes clear that all Maryland families are squarely in the cross hairs of this budget.

The Daily Times Is Just Plain Stupid

When you take such a picture as shown above and place it on the FRONT PAGE of today's newspaper and then QUOTE the Council President, perhaps it would be SMART to actually know WHO is the Council President and who is NOT.

You see Folks, the QUOTE actually came from MATT Holloway and NOT Joe Holloway. This is EXACTLY what I mean when you have new reporters who have NO CLUE who is who. However, remember now, this meeting was over by 2:00, plenty of time for Greg Bassett or Joe Carmean to review and edit the reporter.

If I was Gannett I'd fire the whole bunch of clowns now working for the Daily Times. Joe Holloway has been receiving calls all day long asking why in the hell he would make such a stupid statement.

Why do some of you people even buy that rag any more. By the way. I got a call about this and walked up the Plaza to buy the paper. Yeah, I know, it was killing me! Anyhow, I get all the way up there and I thought, what the hell is going on. I had walked to the GOB earlier today and saw the newspaper in their machine. However, this time, the thing was gone. That's right, the Daily Times came by and took it away. Do you think they knew I was going to catch on to it, buy a paper and rag on them? LOL Someone gave me their paper instead.

OBAMA: Fairness dictates that you should demand more of your neighbor’s earnings.

Spirit Airlines Says Posting Full Airfares Is Government's Way Of Hiding Taxes

In recent years, the Dept. of Transportation has been cracking down on airlines, especially discount carriers, for advertising airfares that don't actually represent what consumers will end up paying. With the latest round of rule changes having just kicked in, low-budget airline Spirit is fighting back, telling its customers that this is all about the government trying to hide higher taxes in airfares.

Schools: A Breeding Ground For Bullies?

Ask any child of any age where they are most likely to get bullied and the answer is almost always the school bus. Think about it: It's the perfect venue for that form of torture. Kids of varying ages are virtually unsupervised except for a bus driver who is trying to focus on driving the kids home safely. The role of the bus driver is to deliver our kids to and from school safely not to mediate conflicts and create harmony.
I've worked with hundreds of adolescents and they list the following as the most likely places where bullying occurs:

Homeland Security Wants More Authority

The chairman and ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee say their panel needs more authority over the Homeland Security Department. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) call scattered oversight an unfinished piece of business from 9/11.They've asked Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to consider a rule that would consolidate DHS oversight under their committee. They cite a White House statement claiming that DHS reports to 100 congressional panels.

Poor Teens Lack Access To Emergency Contraception

Low-income communities have the highest teen pregnancy rates in the U.S., yet emergency contraception may be hardest for girls in those areas to get their hands on, according to a new study.

While pharmacies in underserved communities are just as likely to stock the morning-after pill as pharmacies in more affluent ones, researchers from Boston Medical Center found that pharmacists in poorer areas were more often misinformed about the law and mistakenly were denying 17-year-old girls access to Plan-B.
