Fourth of July: Top holiday for pets to get lost
WASHINGTON (WJLA/ AP) – Flashing lights and loud booms may be exciting for some during the Fourth of July weekend, but for pets, it can be a nightmare.
The unfamiliar noise, rush of bright lights, swarms of people, strange smells and sometimes firework debris falling, can prove to be too much for your beloved pet, sending them leaping over, through or under the fence.
More pets go missing during the Fourth of July weekend than any other time of the year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
“Every year we see several more pets get loose and run the neighborhoods during the Fourth of July weekend,” Scott Giacoppo, chief of field’s services for Washington Humane Society, told WJLA in an interview.

Statement from Governor Larry Hogan on the Fourth of July
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Larry Hogan today released the following statement:
“As Americans join together this Fourth of July to recognize the birth of our nation and celebrate our liberty, it is important to remember and honor the courageous men and women of the armed forces who continue to sacrifice so much to ensure our country remains free. On behalf of all Marylanders, I thank them, as well as their families, for their commitment and bravery. Maryland has a very special place in the founding and history of our great nation, and I couldn't be prouder to be governor of the Free State. The First Lady and I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.”

Backing Into Your Own Driveway Could Cost You In This Florida City
For those who prefer to back vehicles into their driveways, a proposal pending before City Council would make it illegal to park their cars that way unless their license plate information is clearly visible from the street.
The proposed bill is aimed at cracking down on the visual blight that occurs when vehicle owners store cars that don’t work on their property.
Proponents say it’s needed because city code enforcement inspectors face problems cracking down on abandoned vehicles because they need to get the license plate information in order to write a citation. If they cannot see the tags from the street because the car is backed in, they cannot go onto private property to get a closer look at the front of the vehicle.

Kentucky social worker fears for job after helping child no longer assigned to her
Karey Cooper told FoxNews.com she received calls and emails in April from the relatives of a 7-year-old girl alerting her that the girl was being abused at home. Cooper, who had previously worked on the case, went to check on the girl at school, and found her hungry and disheveled. The girl told Cooper she often was not fed meals and did not see her therapist required by a court mandate
"She had not eaten since dinner the night before," Cooper said. "The [school] staff got her a tray together of food and while she ate I brushed the knots out of her hair and put her hair up into a pony tail."

Rutherford steps in for Hogan at MML, touts impact so far
OCEAN CITY — When Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford took the stage to address the Maryland Municipal League on Tuesday night, he said he was there as a “backup” to Gov. Larry Hogan.
Originally scheduled to speak with the state’s municipal leaders, the governor had to cancel his appearance after announcing that he was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a lymphatic system cancer, last week. On Wednesday, Hogan announced that he completed a five-day, 24-hour chemotherapy treatment and was back at work in Annapolis on Thursday.
Rutherford said that in talking with Hogan on the phone this week, the governor remained in “great spirits.”

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 7-4-15
Hitchhiking
Another thing of the past is the “art of the thumb”. In the 1950’s, it was not uncommon to see many guys standing alongside the road with their thumb out, hoping to get a ride by some passing car. The practice had many advantages for both parties. The driver of the car had company on a possibly long trip, and the rider got to where he wanted to go at no expense to him. The majority of riders in those days were sailors from Norfolk. They didn’t make a lot of money, and a free ride was appreciated. Most of them didn’t have to wait long before some car would stop and pick them up.
One thing you never saw was a woman or girl hitchhiking. They just didn’t do it, at least, not around here. That all changed in the 1960’s when the “hippie” movement swept the country, and girls became more a part of mainstream culture. Nowadays, the dangers of anyone being on the highway alone are enough to keep people from seeking the benefit of a free ride.
The practice had pretty well stopped by the 1970’s. It seemed that even the poorest of the poor had a car, or knew somebody who did, and didn’t need to seek a free ride. The idea of picking up some stranger by the side of the road is so foreign today. The sailors of yesterday were always clean-cut-looking young men, and you never had any fear that something bad would happen. Their conversation was always positive, and they were more than glad to share their experiences with you. And the company and conversation on a trip helped to pass the time away.
The occasional hitchhiker of today does not instill in you a great sense of safety to your well-being. So, most of them get passed by. Besides, who wants to take a chance that you are picking up some fugitive or crazy that will add grief to your life.
Along with the steady prospects along Route 13, there was always the road to Ocean City. It was always full of young people trying to get to the ocean. Even kids from Salisbury would hitch toOcean City without a dime in their pocket. They seemed to think it was exciting to do it. Once they got to Ocean City, they would beg for quarters to subsist. This practice was utilized by kids that were more affluent and could easily afford to do things differently. But they thought it was exciting to experience how the “other half” lived. I could never see it myself mainly, because I never liked being dirty – or broke.
Times change, as we all have witnessed. Hitchhiking now has developed into a fine art. Generally, the truck stops are the best place to get a ride. Befriending a trucker can lead to a ride to some far-off destination, and they are usually good company. Some of them are glad for the chance to not have to travel alone. It does take a certain amount of desperation to entrust your life with a perfect stranger though.

How long will the Chesapeake Bay be a great place to fish?
BALTIMORE - A little bit back, I wrote about the Upper Chesapeake Bay making Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes . The Upper Bay snatched spot 57 on the list, its highest ranking since the magazine started its rankings in 2012.
What I didn’t write about is something that gives me pause and makes me wonder how long the Bay will remain on the list. One of the criteria used in creating the list is the health of the fishery. Right now, that part of the Bay is in good shape.
The problem though, lies upstream or in this case, up river. The Susquehanna River made Bassmaster’s initial list of 100 Best Bass Lakes back in 2012. Since then, it’s been a no show. The folks who live along and fish the river north of the Mason Dixon Line will tell you it’s not what it used to be.
