Study: D.C. Drivers Are Worst In The Country
Rankings from an insurance company seem to confirm what you may have
suspected: Drivers in D.C. are the worst in the country.
Allstate says drivers in D.C. get into a crash and file a claim once every 4.7 years, making them 112 percent more likely to do so than a typical driver elsewhere in the country.
Allstate says the average driver nationally gets in a wreck once a decade.

Perspective: Suicides Are A Bigger Problem For The US Military Than Green On Blue Killings.
Unless you’ve been totally tuned out to the war in Afghanistan, the surge in “Green on Blue” or "insider" attacks over the last few weeks has probably drawn your attention. These attacks are certainly on the rise and have become an unwelcome and troubling new trend in this decade long war. The Washington Post reports that there have been 28 of these attacks this year resulting in 39 coalition deaths, 23 of which were US fatalities.
As troubling as these attacks are, the US military is facing a larger and perhaps more menacing problem—one that in July was even more deadly than combat—and it’s one that does not appear to be going away. Furthermore, it’s a problem that bothers me even more than when Afghan soldiers, policemen and civilians turn their guns on American servicemen.

N.J. Man Lands Record Hammerhead Off Ocean City
Scott Cusick, of Jackson, N.J., caught the specimen while participating in the White Marlin Open on Aug. 8 in Ocean City, Md. He and his crew of the "Milling Around" were fishing near a pod of pilot whales in search of tuna and marlin.
His catch wins the largest shark category, which comes with a prize of $5,150.

USPS Moves Ahead Cutting Hours
The Postal Service is finally moving ahead with its plan to cut hours at post offices. It will begin notifying communities after Labor Day that their local post offices may be open for just two or four hours a day. It is going to send surveys to residents and hold public meetings. The first 4,500 post offices could cut their hours by November. When fully implemented, the plan could save the agency $500 million. It cleared a hurdle last week when it got the green light from regulators.
Republican Party Calls For 10% Reduction In Federal Workforce
The Republican Party platform calls for a 10 percent reduction in the federal workforce. And it said federal pay and benefits should be made more in line with those of the private sector. The party unveiled its platform on the eve of its national convention, taking place in Tampa, Fla. The platform said the government has become bloated, antiquated and unresponsive to taxpayers. Cuts would come through attrition. The G0P platform also calls for hiring contractors to replace Transportation Security Administration employees who screen airline passengers.

Park Service Cleans Tents In Yosemite After Two People Died
The Park Service is deep cleaning rental tents in Yosemite National Park after two visitors died from infections. The two contracted lung disease from contact with rodent waste or breathing dust contaminated with it. The Centers for Disease Control confirmed the visitors became sick after staying in a low-priced section of housing called Curry Village, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Now, the Park Service is sending letters to 1,700 visitors who were potentially exposed. The disease can take up to a month to develop. A third of the people who get it, die from it.

On Friday, Aug. 31, skywatchers will be treated to a Blue Moon. Does this mean the Moon will actually look blue? Unfortunately, no. To understand the celestial event — and the story behind the name — we've prepared a brief Q&A, with a little help from James Applegate, a professor of Astronomy at Columbia University.
What is a Blue Moon?
The term Blue Moon refers to the second full moon in a single calendar month. The first full moon was on Aug. 2. The second full moon will occur on Friday, Aug. 31.
I know the phrase "Once in a Blue Moon" means something very rare. How rare is a Blue Moon?
Blue moons happen every two to three years. Typically, a single month only has one full moon. But sometimes another gets squeezed in because our calendar months and our lunar months aren't an exact match. The time between full moons (the time it takes for the moon to orbit the Earth and cycle through all its phases) is 29.5 days. Our calendar months, on the other hand, usually have 30 or 31 days in them. This means each calendar year has about 11 more days than a lunar year. "The fact that our months are about a day longer than the time between full moons means that if the 1st or 2nd (for a 31-day month) is a full moon, then we get a second full moon (the blue moon) in the same month," says Applegate. This happens roughly every 30 months, or every two to three years.

Gun Store Owner Opens Fire on 3 Burglars After They Drove Van Through Wall
Instead, they met owner Stephen Bayezes, who opened fire on the three intruders after the commotion set off an alarm, hitting each one at least once.
