OCEAN CITY – With the full support of Mayor Rick Meehan, the City Council voted this week to seek an independent opinion regarding the legal implications of a successful petition to reduce the property tax rate to the 2009 rate.
Last month the Ocean City taxpayers for Social Justice (OCTSJ) submitted a petition to lower Ocean City’s tax rate to the 2009 rate of 38 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The same day the Mayor and City Council approved the Fiscal Year 2016 Budget that raise the tax rate 2 percent to 47.8 cents.
A couple of weeks ago, Board of Elections Chair Mary Adeline Bradford verified 1,787 petition signatures were submitted. Out of those signatures, 310 were excused, leaving 1,477 valid signatures, which exceeded the required 1,228 signatures needed to require the town conduct a referendum within 90 days or at the next scheduled election, which is in November of 2016.

House Republican leaders have handed a subcommittee gavel back to a defiant colleague days after revoking it in an act of party discipline.
Republican Jason Chaffetz of Utah heads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He says he reconsidered his decision to oust Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina as chairman of the Government Operations subcommittee.

Up to 24,000 emails completely lost
The IRS erased backup takes with Lois G. Lerner’s emails even after the messages were subject to a congressional subpoena, but it was an “unbelievable” chain of coincidences rather than a malicious intent to subvert Congress, the tax agency’s inspector general said Thursday.
As many as 24,000 emails may have been permanently lost, but the inspector general has managed to recover about 1,000 messages from the tapes because the IRS only “degaussed” the tapes but didn’t destroy them.
Still, the move to erase the tapes after they had been requested by Congress didn’t sit well with Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz, who accused IRS chief John Koskinen of obstructing Congress‘ investigation into the emails and tea party targeting.

U.S. Troops Face Eating, Drinking Restrictions During Ramadan
During the 30-day religious celebration of Ramadan, even non-Muslims are expected to obey local laws regarding eating, drinking, and using tobacco in public. Violators can be fined up to $685 or receive two months in jail. A spokesperson for United States Central Command [CENTCOM] said that "we are not aware of any specific instances of anyone being arrested" for such violations.
\For military personnel outside of U.S.-controlled areas, the only exceptions for the rules are for those "performing strenuous labor." Such personnel are "authorized to drink and consume as much food as they need to maintain proper hydration and energy." It is unclear what constitutes "strenuous labor" or whether additional exceptions might be made during a heatwave affecting some areas of the region that has taken hundreds of lives.

Simmering tensions within the Detroit Federation of Teachers are about to come to a boil, with some union members accusing controversial president Steve Conn of misconduct.
The allegations range from bad behavior at union meetings to claims that Conn has aligned the union with a national social justice group, all in violation of the DFT's constitution and bylaws, according to a letter Executive Vice President Ivy Bailey posted online Thursday. A closed hearing on the matter will be held Monday.
Conn, 57, has been on the job for about six months since narrowly winning the election in January.

“We come to celebrate and give thanks for the remarkable life of J. William Fulbright, a life that changed our country and our world forever and for the better. … In the work he did, the words he spoke and the life he lived, Bill Fulbright stood against the 20th century’s most destructive forces and fought to advance its brightest hopes.”
So spoke President William J. Clinton in 1995 of a man who was among the 99 Democrats in Congress to sign the “Southern Manifesto” in 1956. (Two Republicans also signed it.) The Southern Manifesto declared the signatories' opposition to the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education and their commitment to segregation forever. Fulbright was also among those who filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That filibuster continued for 83 days.
Speaking of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, let’s review (since they don’t teach this in schools): The percentage of House Democrats who supported the legislation? 61 percent. House Republicans? 80 percent. In the Senate, 69 percent of Democrats voted yes, compared with 82 percent of Republicans. (Barry Goldwater, a supporter of the NAACP, voted no because he thought it was unconstitutional.)
When he was running for president in 2000, former Vice President Al Gore told the NAACP that his father, Sen. Al Gore Sr., had lost his Senate seat because he voted for the Civil Rights Act. Uplifting story — except it’s false. Gore Sr. voted against the Civil Rights Act. He lost in 1970 in a race that focused on prayer in public schools, the Vietnam War and the Supreme Court.
Gore Jr.’s reframing of the relevant history is the story of the Democratic Party in microcosm. The party’s history is pockmarked with racism and terror. The Democrats were the party of slavery, black codes, Jim Crow, and that miserable terrorist excrescence the Ku Klux Klan. Republicans were the party of Lincoln, of Reconstruction, of anti-lynching laws, of the civil rights acts of 1875, 1957, 1960 and 1964. Were all Republicans models of rectitude on racial matters? Hardly. Were they a heck of a lot better than the Democrats? Without question.

After a massacre like the one at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, our immediate reaction is to do something. Something, for politicians, means legislation. And for Democratic politicians, this means gun control.
It’s the all-purpose, go-to, knee-jerk solution. Within hours of the massacre, President Obama was lamenting the absence of progress on gun control. A particular Democratic (and media) lament was Congress' failure to pass anything after Sandy Hook.
With gun control going nowhere, the psychic national need to nonetheless do something took a remarkable direction: banishment of the Confederate flag, starting with the one flying on the grounds of the statehouse in Columbia, then spreading like wildfire to consume Confederate flags, symbols, statues and even memorabilia everywhere — from the Alabama state capitol to eBay and Amazon.
Logically, the connection is tenuous. Yes, Roof does pose with the Confederate flag, among other symbols of racism, on his website. But does anyone imagine that if the South Carolina flag had been relegated to a museum, the massacre would not have occurred?
Politically, the murders created a unique moment. Gov. Nikki Haley was surely sincere in calling for the Confederate flag’s removal. But she also understood that the massacre had created a moment when the usual pro-Confederate flag feeling — and, surely, expressions of it — would be largely suppressed, presenting the opportunity to achieve something otherwise politically unachievable.

Boehner Retreats On Dissenter Retribution
WASHINGTON – After withering criticism, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has reversed course and allowed a dissenting conservative to be reinstated to a key post.
Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., was stripped of his chairmanship of the Government Operations Subcommittee last week in a move widely acknowledged to be engineered by Boehner in retaliation for trying to slow down passage of the bill giving President Obama “fast-track” trade authority.
A Capitol Hill aide called the reversal, “A huge win for conservatives.”
It was House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who technically disciplined Meadows, but it was widely acknowledged to have been done at the behest of Boehner.
That was after Meadows voted against a procedure facilitating passage of the Trade Promotion Authority, or TPA, bill that eventually passed and gave the president the power to negotiate massive trade deals with other countries, cut Congress out of the negotiations and limit lawmakers’ participation to a simple yes or no vote when such treaties are concluded.
Boehner may have retreated not due to a change of heart, but out of fear of retaliation by conservatives, who threatened to vote with Democrats to bring the speaker’s legislative agenda to a halt.
An even more effective threat may have been when supporters of Meadows leaked word they had enough votes to side with Democrats to oust Boehner as Speaker.
“If the Democrats were to file a motion to vacate the chair and were to vote for that motion unanimously, there probably are 218 votes for it to succeed,” one member of the House Freedom Caucus told Roll Call Tuesday night.
Thursday, Chaffetz and Meadows issued a joint statement.

This report comes from a media anchor, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensativity of the situation, who claimed he actually caught the photo himself before it went to print, and alerted higher ups that the jig would be up, for too many people had already seen this same crises actor. Star Parker: Government and Politics Won't Solve Our Racial Problem
Speaking about the incident, Hillary Clinton said: “It is tempting to dismiss a tragedy like this as an isolated incident — to believe that in today’s America, bigotry is largely behind us, that institutionalized racism no longer exists. But despite our best efforts and our highest hopes, America’s long struggle with race is far from finished.”
Some of the Republican candidates for president are taking heat because they have not come out so boldly and clearly as Clinton regarding the racial dimension of this crime.
Here’s the problem. No one, particularly with all the information we now have about the deranged young man who admitted to committing this crime, can question his racial motivations. He was a sick, pathological racist.
But Clinton, in her zeal to make political capital from this tragedy, conflated and confused very different things — racial bigotry and institutionalized racism — and as a result, at a difficult and sensitive moment, threw out heat when we needed light.
Institutionalized racism is racism that a society officially endorses. It is present when there is a legal framework that supports it.
Institutionalized racism existed in the United States prior to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Social realities and laws that permitted racial discrimination of various kinds were made illegal by those acts.
So Clinton misrepresents reality to suggest that “institutionalized racism” exists today in America. It does not.

Former Chief Of Surgeons Group Calls Obamacare 'Fascism'
The Supreme Court has tossed aside the interests of the American people in favor of an all-powerful government-business coalition, charges the former president of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.
“The guys in the black robes have chosen statism over freedom once again,” asserted Lee Hieb, M.D. “How can people be free when they are dependent on the government for their very health?”
On Thursday, the Supreme Court released its long-awaited decision in the King v. Burwell case, which had challenged the legality of taxpayer subsidies in states that did not set up their own Obamacare exchanges. In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled in favor of the Obama administration and the health law’s supporters, declaring the subsidies are legal and may continue.
The court determined that the law’s reference to exchanges “established by the state” includes exchanges established by the federal government.
But to Hieb, the ruling is not a benign act of generosity that will allow 6 million Americans to keep their health care. Rather, it is an affirmation of an unholy alliance between government and large private industries.
“Let’s call this what it really is – fascism,” Hieb said. “Fascism is by definition an economic arrangement wherein government partners with private industries, choosing winners and losers.”
Hieb, author of “Surviving the Medical Meltdown: Your Guide to Living Through the Disaster of Obamacare,” noted hospital stocks rose 8 percent immediately after the Affordable Care Act was upheld. She also said she received a notice a few weeks ago from Blue Cross Blue Shield that her health premium was going to increase 24 percent after it had jumped about 30 percent just the year before.

Almost immediately after a white killer gunned down nine black worshipers at a historic church in Charleston, South Carolina, out came the politics.
On the Capitol grounds in Columbia flies the battlefield flag of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, often erroneously called the “Confederate flag.” Right after the shooting, calls came for the flag’s removal. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, until now, had defended the compromise that moved the flag in 2000 from the Capitol dome, where it had flown since 1962, to a nearby Confederate soldier memorial on the statehouse grounds.
The killer did not pull out a Confederate flag and use it to kill people. He used a .45. Also, he had flags of apartheid South Africa and separatist Rhodesia. Ban them, too?
President Barack Obama took the opportunity to make the case for additional gun control legislation. “We don’t have all the facts,” he said, “but we do know that once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun.”
OK, now that Obama mentions it, suppose one or more of the churchgoers had been armed? South Carolina is one of 40 states that allow citizens to carry a concealed weapon on a “shall issue” basis, meaning that as long as you pass that state’s basic qualification requirements – things like age, training, no criminal history, etc. – the state will not deny you a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Permit holders, however, cannot bring a firearm to a “house of worship.” Whether the confessed Charleston killer, Dylann Roof, knew this, we don’t know. We do know that one of Roof’s friends said Roof wanted to attack a local college. But, according to the friend, Roof switched targets because of the security around the school. If the school security deterred the killer, might allowing concealed carry in a “house of worship” have a similar effect?

OK, now that Obama mentions it, suppose one or more of the churchgoers had been armed? South Carolina is one of 40 states that allow citizens to carry a concealed weapon on a “shall issue” basis, meaning that as long as you pass that state’s basic qualification requirements – things like age, training, no criminal history, etc. – the state will not deny you a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Permit holders, however, cannot bring a firearm to a “house of worship.” Whether the confessed Charleston killer, Dylann Roof, knew this, we don’t know. We do know that one of Roof’s friends said Roof wanted to attack a local college. But, according to the friend, Roof switched targets because of the security around the school. If the school security deterred the killer, might allowing concealed carry in a “house of worship” have a similar effect?

Calling Thursday's Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare a "disaster," radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh told his radio audience that the left now has the government exactly where it wants it.

Dancing Around Town
How many of us remember the dances of our youth? Over the years new fads in dancing have been the norm in young society. I imagine that back in the 1890’s dancing was much more formal than it is today. There was no place that catered to dancing, and the only chance that boys and girls had to dance was the occasional event at Christmas time. I’m sure there were dances sponsored by a local church at Christmas.
When the Wicomico Hotel was opened in 1925, the entire seventh floor was a ballroom. Dancing had become very popular in the 1920’s, and the local guys and gals were no different from the rest of the country. This trend continued through the depression years of the 1930’s and provided much relief from the real world.
The Second World War really changed how the sexes intermingled on the dance floor. While the Charleston was considered quite risqué, it couldn’t hold a candle to the jitterbug. Even at my class reunions, there are some couples that can still jitterbug as good as ever.
There were places around Salisbury that catered to dancing. The most popular one over the years has to be the Northwood Bar (pictured above c. 1960). What began as an ordinary house was transformed by Winfield Dennis into the night spot of the Eastern Shore. Patrons would come from as far north as Dover in Delawareand as far south as Exmore on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Winfield was a man who couldn’t read or write anything but his name, yet he knew business and what people wanted. The place was packed every Friday and Saturday night. No doubt, it was the place to be.
Over the years, there have been many places that list themselves as “night clubs”, and most of them had a juke box for listening or dancing. Spots such as the Cozy Cabin on the old Delmar Road or the Log Cabin Service Station on Spring Hill Road (now Route 50 west) that advertised “dancing, beer, refreshments and soft drinks” were listed in the Yellow Pages in 1940. By 1950, there was only one listing and that was for Rick’s Motel and Bar on Foskey Lane in Delmar. By 1960, there are no “night clubs” listed in the Yellow Pages. I don’t know what they were listed under, but there were several places that catered to the imbibers with itchy feet.
When I was in high school, the local churches would sponsor dances on Friday night. The most popular was Bethesda. After a Friday night football game, it was really crowded. They also had a dance at the Fellowship Hall on N. Division Street which was under the auspices of Asbury Church. St. Peter’s had some dances in their Parish House basement. In all, the parents tried very hard to provide wholesome entertainment for the teenagers. Whether dancing or watching, everyone seemed to have a good time and they were always under the watchful eyes of the chaperones.

Confederate flag pulled from SC capitol grounds by activists
An activist group claimed responsibility for taking the flag down. Witnesses said two people were detained by authorities almost immediately after one of them scaled the flag pole on the north side of the State House grounds and pulled the Confederate banner down.
The S.C. Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Protective Services said it arrested two people at around 6:15 a.m..
A Bureau of Protective Services officer was on routine patrol and had just made his rounds when he was notified by other officers monitoring the flag that a woman was climbing the flag pole where the Confederate Flag flies where Main Street deadends into the State House grounds. The officer asked the woman, who was wearing climbing gear, to get off the flag pole. She refused to come down until she unhooked the flag.

DSP: New Jersey Teen Arrested After Sneaking into Firefly
The investigation was initiated on Wednesday June 24, 2015 after information was received by detectives that a video was posted to YouTube detailing a young male's entry into the Firefly Music Festival's grounds on Sunday June 21st. The video, which was titled, "Cameras Allowed: How to Actually Sneak into a Music Festival," has since been removed from YouTube and was posted on Sam Moeller's account.
Criminal Detectives were able to link the account with a Sam Moeller, 18 of Moorestown, New Jersey, and generate a warrant for Criminal Trespass 2nd and Theft Under $1,500.00 for failing to pay the admission fee of $199.00. Moeller turned himself into troopers on Thursday June 25, 2015 and was released on a $300.00 unsecured bond.

Some know that the principle of welfarism is a scam and that one group – the recipients of the free lunch – will benefit at the expense of another – the producers of wealth. Others believe it to be moral and the only way society can care for the poor and therefore they endorse government force to redistribute all wealth in a “free and equitable” manner. They ignore the challenging question as to who will produce the wealth to be passed out. Economists like Paul Krugman belong to this group.

Defending his man’s honor on his personal blog published through his new employer, the left-wing Brookings Institution, Bernanke recently said he is “appalled” that the U.S. Treasury Department is considering removing Hamilton’s mug shot from the ten dollar bill and replacing him with a woman (Bella Abzug? Elinor Roosevelt? Oprah? Who knows).
Bernanke makes a case for “the greatest of our founders” on his June 22 blog entry, but in doing so he gets his economics and his American history exactly backwards. He first praises Hamilton for his part in “creating the Constitution.” But the plan for the Constitution that Hamilton favored – a “permanent president” who would appoint all state governors who would have veto power over all state legislation – was summarily rejected by the constitutional convention, as was his proposal for a national bank. Hamilton abandoned the constitutional convention after a couple of days, eventually condemning the actual Constitution that was adopted as “a frail and worthless fabric.” Some constitutionalist, eh Ben?
Hamilton then spent the rest of his life doing everything he could to undermine the limits on governmental powers in the Constitution. His legalistic arguments provided (and provide) the template for future generations of slick, deceiving lawyers like himself to rewrite the Constitution through case law in a way that has completely destroyed its government-limiting functions. ‘All about the money’: Motorists plagued by sky-high Calif. traffic ticket fines
After driving without a seat belt and no front plate, he got a $25 traffic ticket that jumped to $300 with assessments and surcharges. Unable to pay in full, the ticket rose to $600, and then $819 when he missed a court date.
The state automatically took his driver's license and turned the ticket over to a collections agency. Police later impounded his car when he drove to work on a suspended license. Unable to make a living, Campbell ended up broke and homeless.

The editorial board of PennLive/The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa. is taking a hardcore stance against those who disagree with the Supreme Court ruling to legalize gay marriage.
“As a result of Friday’s ruling, PennLive/The Patriot-News will no longer accept, nor will it print, op-Eds and letters to the editor in opposition to same-sex marriage,” they declared.
After receiving strong pushback, the newspaper’s editorial board, which is overseen by Editorial Page Editor John Micek, quickly revised its policy. Freedom of speech will be allowed — but only for a “limited” period of time.
Micek explained on Twitter: “Clarification: We will not foreclose discussion of the high court’s decision, but arguments that gay marriage is wrong/unnatural are out.”
Before that, there was this: “From the edit: ‘PL/PN will no longer accept, nor will it print, op-Eds and letters to the editor in opposition to same-sex marriage.’ …This is not hard: We would not print racist, sexist or anti-Semitc letters. To that, we add homophobic ones. Pretty simple.”

The United States is bankrupt. Even officially, its debt-to-GDP ratio is well above 100%, the economic/financial point-of-no-return. Unofficially, its total debts-and-liabilities now exceed $200 trillion – ten times as much as this (relatively) puny economy can service, over even the medium term. The U.S. is not merelybankrupt, it is in a financial state unique to the Western governments of the 21stcentury: “ridiculously bankrupt”.
The United States government has never, in its entire history, paid less interest on its debts. Consider the absurd perversity here. Back when we had a rational/legitimate (and solvent) economic system, financing operated on a very basic principle of risk: the greater the risk of default, the higher the interest rate demanded by lenders. Obviously the highest rates of interest would be required with respect to any insolvent/near-insolvent debtors.
This principle is merely elementary common sense, and used to be an automatic reality of lending/borrowing. The fact that readers even need to be reminded of this basic principle indicates how far divorced from such rationality our criminal/fraudulent system has become. In the Wonderland Matrix, the more-bankrupt that a (Western) government gets, the less interest it pays on its debts (unless that nation’s name is “Greece”).

The unidentified Roanoke man posted a picture on Craigslist of his adorable dog, Molly, but the hilarious ad made clear that it was his girlfriend who was being advertised.

Roberts Rips Gay Marriage Ruling, Day After He Backed ObamaCare
In his dissenting opinion -- which he read from the bench for the first time in his nearly 10 years as chief justice -- Roberts charged Friday that the court had no right to intervene in what should be a democratic debate by the people, at the state level, over same-sex marriage.
"This court is not a legislature," he wrote. "Whether same-sex marriage is a good idea should be of no concern to us. Under the Constitution, judges have power to say what the law is, not what it should be."
As for the state's role, he said: "The fundamental right to marry does not include a right to make a State change its definition of marriage."
The dissent underscored how unpredictable -- and to his critics, confounding -- the chief justice, appointed by a Republican president, can be.
He has earned many critics on the right for, twice, helping save vital elements of the Affordable Care Act -- conservative justices effectively accused him of twisting the law to save ObamaCare in Thursday's ruling. But in his dissent on the 5-4 gay marriage ruling, Roberts accused others on the court of, similarly, overstepping their bounds.

Black Chamber of Commerce: EPA Plan Will Increase Black Poverty, Strip 7 Million Black Jobs
(CNSNews) - A study commissioned by the National Black Chamber of Commerce, which represents 2.1 million black-owned businesses in the United States, found that the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Power Plan would increase black poverty by 23 percent and cause the loss of 7 million jobs for black Americans by 2035.
The study also found that the EPA' plan would increase Hispanic poverty by 26 percent and cause the loss of 12 million jobs for Hispanic Americans by 2035.
The EPA proposed the Clean Power Plan on June 2, 2014 to cut carbon emissions from power plants. The National Black Chamber of Commerce commissioned the study to evaluate the potential economic and employment impacts of the plan on minority groups.

"This new human case is a reminder that West Nile virus is still active in Delaware," said Dr. Karyl Rattay, Division of Public Health director. "It's tempting with the distractions of summer fun to forget to protect you and your loved ones from insect bites. These bites can cause much more serious health problems than just itching and discomfort.”
Emily Knearl, spokesman for the Division of Public Health, would not say where in Sussex County the girl lives. She was discharged from the hospital June 17, she said.
"It could have happened pretty much anywhere in the state because we don't know where she was bitten," Knearl said.

Report: IRS Illegally Awarding Contracts to Companies With Tax Debt
(CNSNews) - The Internal Revenue Service is prohibited by law from doing business with companies that owe back taxes or have felony convictions, but it doesn't always work out that way.
A report prepared in March and released Wednesday by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) says the IRS awarded $18.8 million in contracts to 17 corporations with federal tax debt in Fiscal Years 2012 and 2013.
The investigation also found that one IRS contractor with a felony conviction received three contracts.
Beginning in FY 2012, federal law barred the IRS from using appropriated funds to hire contractors that have tax debt and/or felony convictions.
But following its investigation, "TIGTA found that the IRS did not have effective controls in place to prevent the award of contracts to corporations with certain federal tax debt and/or felony convictions."
TIGTA identified 17 corporations that were awarded a total of 57 contracts valued at about $18.8 million during FYs 2012 and 2013, while the corporations had federal tax debt.

SCOTUS Ruling On Same-Sex Marriage Mandates Nationwide Concealed Carry Reciprocity
The Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry nationwide, in a historic decision that invalidates gay marriage bans in more than a dozen states.
Gay and lesbian couples already can marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia. The court’s ruling on Friday means the remaining 14 states, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage.
The outcome is the culmination of two decades of Supreme Court litigation over marriage, and gay rights generally.
You can peruse the full ruling here, but the meat of the activist Court’s over-long decision hinges on a single paragraph.
The Court used Section 1 of the Fourteen Amendment to justify their argument, which reads:
Amendment XIV
Section 1.
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
By using the Constitution in such a manner, the Court argues that the Due Process Clause extends “certain personal choices central to individual dignity and autonomy” accepted in a majority of states across the state lines of a handful of states that still banned the practice.
The vast majority of states are “shall issue” on the matter of issuing concealed carry permits, and enjoy reciprocity with a large number of other states.
My North Carolina concealed carry permit, for example, was recognized yesterday as being valid in 36 states, which just so happened to be the number of states in which gay marriage was legal yesterday. But 14 states did not recognize my concealed carry permit yesterday.

Since President Johnson first declared war on poverty in his 1964 State of the Union address, this war has cost US taxpayers $22 trillion.The primary implement of this war has and continues to be public assistance programs. Prior to the war, the poverty rate had fallen steadily from just under 35 percent in 1949 to just over 15 percent in 1965. As expenditures on public assistance programs soared from roughly $50 billion per year in 1965 to just under $1 trillion in 2013, the poverty rate has been stuck between 10 percent and 15 percent. These trends suggest that public assistance programs trap people in poverty.
The minimum wage is another major implement in the war on poverty. In 2009, it was raised to $7.25 per hour, its highest level (in real terms) since 1981. Thereafter, the poverty rate inched up to 15 percent in 2010, and remained near that rate through 2013. Despite this, President Obama, in his 2014 State of the Union address, called for the federal minimum wage to be raised to $10.10. Later that year, his sales pitch for this proposal included: “One of the simplest and fastest ways to start helping folks get ahead is by raising the minimum wage. Ask yourself: could you live on $14,500 a year? That’s what someone working full-time on the minimum wage makes. If they’re raising kids, that’s below the poverty line. And that’s not right. A hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.”
The president’s argument above, however, is based on a false narrative. The typical person earning the minimum wage is not raising a family on $7.25 an hour, and working forty hours a week. Obama scolds heckler: 'You're in my house'
The heckler had interrupted Obama's remarks by protesting the detention and deportation of gay, lesbian and transgender immigrants.
The president responded, "Hold on a second." When the heckler persisted, Obama, flashing an exasperated look, countered, "OK, you know what?" Wagging his finger and shaking his head, Obama said, "No, no, no, no, no," repeating the word more than a dozen times.
As the heckler continued to talk over him, Obama took it up a notch.

9-Year-Old Pedestrian Struck In Fenwick Expected To Recover From Accident
Just before 9 p.m. last Saturday, Zander Hartman, 9, of Lehighton, Pa., was crossing Coastal Highway at its intersection with Route 54, or Lighthouse Rd., with family and friends when he was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban. The group was attempting to cross Coastal Highway from west to east and stopped at the median when the pedestrian crossing signal went red.
According to the Delaware State Police, after Hartman and his family and friends successfully crossed the southbound lanes of traffic on Coastal Highway, or Route 1, as it is known north of the Delaware line, the crossing signal changed, forcing them to halt in the median near the raised curb.

State Dept. admits Clinton failed to disclose Benghazi emails
State Department officials said Thursday they were unable to locate 15 emails between Hillary Clinton and her confidante Sidney Blumenthal that were released earlier this week by the House Select Committee on Benghazi.
The acknowledgement raises questions about whether Clinton disclosed all of her work-related emails to the State Department, as she has claimed.
All of the emails were written before the 2012 terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, theAssociated Press reported Thursday.
"We have confirmed that the emails Secretary Clinton provided the Department include almost all of the material in Mr. Blumenthal's production. There are, however, a limited number of instances, 15, in which we could not locate all or part of the content of a document from his production within the tens of thousands of emails she gave us," a State Department official, who declined to be named, told the Washington Examiner. "Those instances are described in a letter the department sent today to the committee. The substance of those 15 emails is not relevant to the 2012 attacks in Benghazi."

In a victory for gun rights advocates, the Supreme Court ruled that possession of a modified shotgun is not considered a violent felony under federal law.
The court ruled 8-1 on Friday that an increased sentence for such a gun owner violates due process.
The plaintiff, Samuel Johnson, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The government sought a longer sentence under the Armed Career Criminal Act, which imposes an increased prison term for people with three prior convictions of a violent felony.
The federal government had argued that Johnson's prior conviction for possessing a short-barreled shotgun was a violent felony. The government won, and a 15-year sentence was imposed for Johnson.
The justices found that the law's residual clause was vague, especially surrounding whether the gun possession was a violent crime.

Mosby's office takes credit for calming crowd, saving Baltimore from being 'burned to the ground'
In a new court filing submitted Wednesday, State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's office claims their actions in charging six police officers helped restore order and calm the crowd after Freddie Gray's death, saving Baltimore "before the entire city became an armed camp or was burned to the ground."
"Mrs. Mosby was trying to calm the crowd, not incite it," wrote Michael Schatzow for Mosby's office, in a response to a defense motion, according to the Baltimore Sun. "Her repeated pleas for peace while the criminal justice system does its work served a legitimate law enforcement function."
Mosby's office was responding to attorneys for the police officers, who have asked the judge to throw the case against the officers out, and claim that Mosby's actions have tainted the jury pool.
Mosby's now-famous speech from the steps of Baltimore's War Memorial where she said, "I heard your call for 'no justice, no peace.' Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man," was appropriate in light of the fact that Baltimore was reeling from a night of riots, arson and looting, Schatzow argued in his response.
He dismissed defense attorney arguments that a single news conference could have an outsized impact on the case, according to the Sun. "While there has been an extraordinary amount of publicity about this case, there has been no prosecutorial misconduct," Schatzow wrote.

BALTIMORE (WJLA) - A retired Baltimore Police Department officer came out firing on twitter, talking about bad behavior he claims he witnessed, and participated in, during his time on the force.
The tweets went viral and got a lot of people talking, with some calling him a hero while others labeled him a snitch. After a series of tweets Wednesday, Sergeant Michael Wood's Twitter following went from just a few hundred to nearly 9,000. It’s obvious something he said struck a nerve.
In tweets Wednesday, Wood claims he witnessed a serious of bad acts, including officers who urinated and defecated on suspects’ beds during raids. He also claims he saw an officer kicking a handcuffed suspect.
“I didn't realize I was revealing anything,” Wood told ABC7, “I thought all this was stuff that was previously known and I was confirming it.”

Alaska Airlines flight attendants sue Boeing over fumes
Four Alaska Airlines flight attendants filed a lawsuit against Boeing Co Tuesday claiming they were exposed to toxic fumes on one flight in July 2013. The complainants reportedly accused the plane manufacturer of negligence and design defects in the Boeing 737-890.
The flight attendants -- Vanessa Woods, Faye Oskardottir, Darlene Ramirez and Karen Neben -- filed the lawsuit in U.S. Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, saying they suffered several health issues after inhaling toxic cabin air on Flight 769 on July 12, 2013. They stated that the aircraft draws air from the engine to pressurize the cabin and this air can become toxic if it is exposed to heated engine oil, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing the lawsuit.
“By reason of Boeing’s design decisions, the environmental control system on the subject aircraft lacked filters which would have purified the cabin air and prevented the subject flight attendant crew from being exposed to toxic fumes,” the lawsuit reportedly stated.
