Paris: Notre Dame to Be Rebuilt Without Modern Look

Notre Dame Cathedral will be rebuilt just the way it stood before last year's devastating fire.

No swimming pool or organic garden on the roof of the medieval Paris monument, or contemporary glass spire, or other modern twists. And to stay historically accurate, it will again be built with potentially toxic lead.

That's the verdict reached by French President Emmanuel Macron, the cathedral's present-day architects and the general in charge of the colossal reconstruction project for one of the world's most treasured landmarks.

Macron, who wants Notre Dame reopened in time for the 2024 Olympics, had initially pushed for a contemporary touch atop the cathedral, prompting eye-catching proposals from architects around the world.

But Macron came around to the traditionalists' argument, and approved reconstruction plans for the 12th century monument that were presented Thursday, according to a statement from state agency overseeing the project.

Good! The Cathedral at Notre Dame is an architectural and historical icon, deserving of a return to its original form.

I liked the modern designs.
The original spires were replaced once.
This fire is now a part of it's history just like the damage and looting and public be headings of statues and the melting of the bells to make cannons during the revolution.
Returning it to it's original state is historic and nostalgic but it is also pastiche. It has had a long life and deserves new life not as a relic but as the churches everlasting embodiment of hope across the ages.
I'm ok too with a historic renovation but there are few craftsman today to do it right and why not use modern ingenuity technology and materials like those that built it in their time.

It was built several hundred years ago when my family was indentured slaves to the British.

Many were hoping for contemporary considerations to reflect changing times, including Popsicle sticks, Legos and aluminum pull tabs.
