Michigan county treasurer rebuked for seizing retiree's home over $8 tax debt

Commissioners say they are forming special investigative committee to look into forfeiture practices

Officials in one Michigan county are demanding answers from their treasurer amid concerns that the county could be on the hook for millions of dollars in payments to former homeowners whose properties were seized under a tough forfeiture practice.

Oakland County commissioners sent an angry letter last week to Treasurer Andrew Meisner after the Michigan Supreme Court rebuked the county’s decision to seize one homeowner’s house after he underpaid his taxes by $8.41.

The commissioners said that they are forming a special investigative committee to look into the forfeiture practices and "make recommendations to protect the Oakland County taxpayers."

“It appears your actions as Treasurer to foreclose on an Oakland County retiree’s property for $8.41 has exposed the county to serious risk,” the July 21 letter to Meisner, signed by board Chairman David Woodward and commissioners Mike Gingell and Helen Zack, said, according to the Detroit News.

Meisner did not immediately return Fox News' request for comment.

If there was ever a cause for an independent investigation it's here. I think it would expose trends in the numbers of application and favoritism in the classes who were either Rep.-Dem., black/white, and other situations of malfeasance in office.

Hamlet said 'I think thee doth protest too much'. I think you'll find Meisner is biased either toward classes, politics,or is just plain over zealous.Is that County's Treasury broke and would less than nine bucks change it?

In any case the lack of common sense indicates it's time for his ouster and replacement. If he can't understand the inequity of prosecution vs collection cost then how the Hell did he get to be Treasurer in the beginning. Is this the wise use of tax dollars? Definitely a Dimocrat Dumbocrat thought process!

"Oh, it's such a petty amount. Why did they do this?"

The same reason why, "Oh, it's such a petty amount. Why didn't the owner just pay this?"

A slight overreach wouldn't you say...sounds like something that would be done here.

He was elected. This is what happens when you let just anybody vote.

The guy was 80 and the article doesn't say how quickly they screwed him over. Maybe he was waiting for the next years tax bill, maybe it got lost or he thought it was an error, maybe he was sick. But if you had bothered to read the article, which obviously you didn't, they also did not give him the proceeds from the sale, not only did they steal the house they stole his money. An 80 year old. 6 years ago. So he would be 86 now and maybe he isn't even alive. Maybe he was ill and hospitalized when it happened and died so they figured screw it lets keep the money.

Ugly is ugly and so is your short sighted comment

Enjoy your property now because if the Democrats and Soros take over none of you will be allowed to own property anymore. Look into other countries in how Socialist/Communism works.

@403p

I know tax sales. There are many certified letters sent out to tell you about the impending loss of your home. These certified letters are on top of the bills already sent out for the regular yearly tax bills. Then, on top of BOTH of those, there's public advertising of the sale. Then, on top of ALL OF THAT, the redemption after the sale is highly visible too. So it's sounds like you're the one showing your ignorance. Take some personal accountability for your actions.
