A Viewer Writes: Another Day Off?

She wants a state holiday in Maryland and putting Hogan on the spot. I thought MLK Day was a holiday? This would mean that every state and local government employee would get another day off at the taxpayers expense.

Well there is no fed holiday in June....

I'm curious how many people even knew about Juneteenth before Trump scheduled his rally in Oklahoma then had to move the date.

Horseshit

Along the lines of what the GreaseMan said on DC radio a few years back...:

MLK, JuneTeenth, three more and we can take the whole week off

Oh, it will become a Federal holiday. Crazy B.S.!

It’s not like they get much actual work done when they show up.

I’ve said it before. Glad I already escaped MD Democrats. DE Democrats are bad too but not as powerful as those in MD have become.

I never heard of this until the media made an issue of Trump scheduling a rally on this date.

As if the bank needs another day off with our money and same for the State level.

The public sector gets more inept every day.... and demand more rewards.

If they want to make up a holiday in June, then we get some sort of ridiculous white people holiday in August. Don't say any other holiday is white, because there isn't a single one that other races don't celebrate.

They will take away Columbus Day and replace it with this. Many years ago Good Friday was taken in favor of MLK Day.

Juneteenth – A Balanced View

Suddenly we’re bombarded with Juneteenth, and pandering politicians (redundancy?) are stampeding to create a holiday to celebrate it. What’s up? I’m a history buff from way back but had only a tiny recollection of this event.

Stipulation and Context. Slavery has been with us since the dawn of recorded time. Abraham had slaves. Slaves on all continents with the exception of Antarctica and Australia. Never a good thing, it persists today in some less developed areas despite officially being banned. We all agree; it’s always been bad.

Now to the Civil War; pick your argument as to the cause: States’ Rights or Retention of Slavery?

Lincoln was the first Republican president, and Republicans were essentially an abolitionist party as a bedrock position. By 1862 the Union had moved to a war footing and it was evident the war might continue. Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation, to take effect January 1, 1863, which declared that all slaves in the states opposing the Union would be freed on that date. So that is the keystone date. There were small numbers of slaves in some Union states; they were not freed.

In practical terms, affected slaves who didn’t know about it, and their owners who didn’t comply because they opposed the Union, rendered it just a concept and a piece of paper. Until the ‘former’ slave escaped, the owner had a change of heart or Union troops took control of the area, nothing had changed at ground level.

April 9, 1865 is when Lee surrendered to Grant ending most Confederate resistance, but there were still organized Rebel military units that were unaware for some time afterward. It’s a big country and news traveled by horse or telegraph, if it was installed and intact. So the fact it took a while for news of the surrender to reach Galveston, TX isn’t surprising, nor is that any slaveowners there who had heard of the Emancipation Proclamation previously probably didn’t share news of its existence and impact.

Texas is a very large slice of land. Reading a proclamation in Galveston on the coast doesn’t inform us how quickly the news went into the rest of the state. Texas was sparsely populated and thus didn’t have a large slave population. Juneteenth has been observed in Texas for a while which makes sense because it happened locally. Its import in the rest of the states is much less certain. Clam Chowder might make sense as the State Soup of Rhode Island, but not so much for Kansas. Union states, or states admitted after the war have even less cause to jump on the bandwagon.

To conclude, the Emancipation Proclamation is and was a big deal since it formally abolished slavery. Unfortunately, it took effect on New Year’s which is already a holiday so that frustrates those in search of another day off with/without pay. MLK Day was created by defrocking Columbus Day so there are no easy pickings for carving out another 3 day weekend. Juneteenth falls midway between Memorial Day and July 4th so it’s not like anyone hasn’t had a break in a while. Let’s be cognizant of it but recognize it’s a subset of a bigger piece of history.

As a 23 yr state employee I had no intention of doing much that day anyway. You are welcome for my service.

Anonymous said...

Sure. Give them more time off. State employees hardly do anything now! And when they do it's like you work for them, not the other way around.

This state needs a huge state employee purge. A good starting point would be the Maryland Division of Revenue, Department of Assessments and Taxation, and the State Highway Department. All are in need of a BIG flush.

We just can't keep adding holidays to the the gummint employees' calendar.

I really don't give a damn, provided that gummint employees give one of their other paid holidays. NO WORK, NO PAY.

@ 77 it's the first I've heard of this commemorative day.

Every ridiculous holiday that is made up is by white people...so what the hell....Jews got reparations for what they went through but we got nothing and still going through the hate.

Anonymous said...

First of all Columbus didn't discover America...so what does he get a day for?

Anonymous said...

Any history that concerns blacks is only a tiny recollection because you don't want the world to know how really horrible blacks were treated....it's a lot about blacks that weren't recorded in your books.

You people are funny.

Anonymous said...

Well how they take the day off and you continue to work..lol

Anonymous said...

LMAO...I remember Nino...and I couldn't agree more

Is Maryland going to start following Hallmark for their Holiday policy? Sorry but you folks didn’t give a hoot about the last day of Slavery for well over a century, so why does it mean anything now? Get over it. Slavery happened. It was abolished in the 1860s. Move on. You people are worst than the wife that continues to whine like a moron over the same crap different day. It’s over. Check yourselves.

This is a silly insidious comment. Many free black men also owned slaves back in the Slave Era. One such black slave owner lived in Accomac. He had more slaves than many of his white contemporaries but everyone seems to bypass Mr. Johnson when they yammer on about reparations and the such.

Maybe you should try reading some history for a change and stop bitching about something for which you obviously have zero clue about.

Anonymous said...

Nobody thanked you so why are you saying you’re welcome?

Anonymous said...

i will take it as a Federal Holiday, I will take all that they can give me. Add another day to my calendar of days off.

Anonymous said...

Is anyone here going to relay the history where freed black slaves were given reparations but the Democrats, after forming the Klan, took those reparations away by force? Ummm I didn’t think so. Well now you know.

What do you mean? They don’t even work most of the days they’re supposed to work anyway. Another holiday is just like every other day in a gov worker’s life, isn’t it? What has MD state gov done for you lately?

June 10 10:21 i will take it a step further. The war was already ongoing it started in April of 1861, The war was already going on for a year and a half before slavery was fully brought into it. On September 22, 1862, Lincoln issued a preliminary warning that he would order the emancipation of all slaves in any state that did not end its rebellion against the Union by January 1, 1863. ... The Emancipation Proclamation outraged the people even more, like rubbing salt into a wound. Lincoln also brought it into it so that blacks could fight. They did on both sides of the war. He also used it to get more of the North involved that did not like or condone slavery. It was a political ploy on the behalf of Lincoln. He wanted to be President of all of the UNITED states not just the Northern part.

The American Civil War was a tariff war between the North and the South. Nothing to do with slavery. It was over taxation. I realize the college has let some history professor write this gobble goop but stop adding to the Fake History by omitting things that should be also said when recanting history. Half baked excuses are not the full truth.

Your'e right. Don't count on Democrats to do it for you, they just use you to get themselves elected and kept in their elected positions. Blacks have been treated very badly and still are. Unless it fits the agenda's don't count on them to help, look @ all the blacks killed since the riots and protests started, where is the outrage of the killed back officers? Crickets from the left. They pander just enough to keep the vote.

With over three weeks in paid vacation minimum, volumes of personal and sick leave, does the feds really need another holiday?

8:42
Columbus was Jewish.
He was not Caucasian

The attack is against Caucasians.
The Jews are helping the Blacks with the attack.
Wake up

Nobody has cared since the 1860s. Even during the Real Civil Rights Movement, this was not a date of interest. This is all virtue signaling designed to manipulate you and make you have white guilt. Nothing more.
