Maryland making big money with 'porta potty' speed cameras

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — On certain evenings, one of the Washington area's busiest roadways could easily be mistaken for a nightclub.

Strobes of white light dance across the lanes of Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Maryland, on nights when a silent guest joins the club of vehicles intertwined among the asphalt.

"I see the flash at nighttime coming back from the gym," said Clarksburg resident Vick Kumar. "And I see that thing going off and flickering. So I know its giving out tickets."

The bright lights emanate from a small SUV parked on the shoulder of the southbound lanes of the highway. The vehicle is rigged with a portable radar device and camera which captures the speed and license plate of any vehicle traveling over 66 miles per hour. The speed limit is 55 mph, but drivers are given an 11 mph buffer.

Our wonderful government (especially Maryland) sure is quick to penalize us at every turn, but you see how it works whenever the money has to flow in the OTHER direction.

Does it take a picture of your tag if you run over it at under 66 mph?

ALL tags are read and identified & photographed.

Sad that being sneaky is the only revenue generator left from Annapolis.

Shameful actually.

The article about the porta potty is B/S. They say is is for the "operator" that is required in the car for the speed camera. That is just utter B/S. No operator is physically required for the operation of any speed camera. How stupid do they think readers are? That porta potty is for the construction workers, and the state is using is to obscure the camera car from the motorists vision. It is what it is.

This is completely preventable. Don't want the ticket, don't speed. No one is forcing your foot down on the pedal. Stop being whiney snowflake victims.

For the cost of only two or three of those camera speeding notices, I can pay for my radar detector that warns me in advance and allows me to slow down before the speed trap. Stationary unmanned radar is "always on" and easy to detect from a mile away. Garmin GPS even has a subscription service that will alert a driver where the stationary radars are set up. Radar detectors and GPS don't give any driver immunity from getting caught, but using a little discretion, along with the devices, avoids a lot of headaches (and fines) due to lapses in paying strict attention to all the hazards of driving. 10:47, I'll wave when I go by you. I'm sure you will give me the one finger salute in return, while you wonder why I get away with it. Don't worry, nothing "whiney" about me. Before you claim I am a reckless or dangerous driver, I am not a hot-rodder. My last moving violation was over 40 years ago. And I have held a CDL for those same 40 years plus. My record is clean as a whistle, because I avoid or slow down for speed traps. I doubt many people have a record as clean as mine. No one is forcing my foot down on the pedal, or the brake. The choice is all mine. 10:47, YOU sound like the whiney one. I love the "holier than thou" ones like you. Bet you speed like all the others.
