A Viewer Writes: MD Unemployment Insurance is Broken

Joe,

Good Morning,

We live in Mount Vernon, Maryland, and are in a very difficult state, at the moment. My wife has health issues and is paying her bills on $1,300 SS payment, $825 of which goes to monthly insurance. It leaves almost nothing left for the daily needs to just stay alive. Due to her illness, the local university, would not accept her doctor approved accommodation requests, and put her out of work from a 20 year career, last October. She applied for the Maryland Unemployment in early April, and has filed the weekly claim requirement, this being the fifth week. She received a letter on April 1st, stating that her claim was incomplete, and that she would receive a email or letter, providing her an appointment from a state official. Nothing yet, either via email or by mail.

She has received notice that her account is active, and asks her reapply, which she does immediately. She has received letters that her account "may" be on hold, but active. She even received a letter this week, congratulating her on finding a job? Funny, these letters require a 7 day response, and the date on the letter it self is over two weeks behind, meaning by the time the letter gets to her, the deadline has already passed. The website directs you to email, which no one responds to, and she also had several returned saying the email address does not exist? A message says no one is working in a state office, but they are remote for a response. Nothing ever happens.

My daily phone calls to the 410 949 0022 Maryland Unemployment office starts at 6:45 am every day. The line is busy for all of about 50 redials, but out of those, ONE will get you to the recorded message. It will direct you through several prompts, then tell you that all operators are busy, and hang up on you. In summary, the letters offer no response, the emails are kicked back, and the phone calls never result in having a real person talk to you. When you are just trying to hold on, is this the best my Government, that I have paid taxes to for over 50 years, can offer me?

I have messages left for Andy Harris, and I'm asking for ANYONE in the Maryland Goverment, please Govenor Hogan, PLEASE Can you help?

Call and send an email to your state senators and delegates.

My daughter applied back in March when the mall was closed. Has received one letter. It shows what she will be getting if approved but that is it. She calls every single day and has yet to speak to anyone. Sometimes has been on hold for 5 hrs for it to just disconnect. She has received nothing.

Very Sad ! And I believe this 100% True !

I'm so sorry you and your wife are going through this. This is unconscionable!

The below article is why the unemployment system wont work, its on purpose. The state is broke, as in bankrupt, there is no money to issue. All government employees are getting paychecks each week while there is zero money coming in to sustain the payout. Hogan was previously spending like a drunken democrat with zero preparedness for any serious disaster. Now they will hold the people of MD hostage untill they get a Trump Bucks bailout {which WE will all be held responsible for paying for it in the near future}
The OP should find plan B because no matter how much you beg and pleed with you government, they are NOT going to help, hence the continued lockdown.

I don't know why so many people are having problems when I've gotten it on time each week for the past 4 weeks. Last week I did have to wait in the queue line for over an hour (submitted my email and they emailed me when my turn), but this week I got right on with no wait. Always get my money on Tuesday.

Delaware's is no better. My son has been trying for months and still can't get it. He calls every week like he is supposed to and then gets a letter saying it's inactive and to call them. No one ever answers. He has e-mailed and mailed letters to them and still nothing.

I am in my SEVENTH week of what you are going through. My first 4 claims
were done on their WEBCERT portal and the last 3 on the current portal. EXACTLY as you describe. I don't know what to do so am just waiting it out. Andy Harris's office replied with a BS letter that just danced around the issue with no suggestions whatsoever. I am sorry you are going through this but so are others. Not your fault. Good luck and stay safe.

Lock down larry is way to busy to bother with you for he's busy running up and down the east coast doing all the networks bashing trump and trying to get people to elect him on his next political position
He's not worried about the people of Maryland at all
HUGH mistake voting for him ever
Worst govenor ever
Stabbed every conservative in the back multiple times
Snake in the grass

My son is going through the very same thing. He lost his full time job in March due to the lockdown. He hasn’t received one penny of unemployment even though he filed March 20. His is account is showing active tho he is receiving nothing in the mail. He has tried to call relentlessly. He can’t ever get anyone on the phone. This is causing a lot of people extreme trauma. Keep calling Hogan’s office. I would also try email. Andy Harris too. Reach out to media as much as possible.

Everyone needs to be contacting their state legislators! Hogan and your other state level public servants clearly don’t give a damn about the unemployment payment situation. I collected unemployment very briefly in September or October last year. I just got an email saying my claim had been reactivated. Say what? Google the company Hogan hires to administer this disaster. Very suspicious.

If it is any consolation , “not” , I have been on line and telephone and email for 6 weeks and the program changes constantly... I still cannot file a “webcert” to get the money due. The computer program and associated procedures were devised by idiots..

Maryland is broken

Anonymous said...

Unemployment,EBT, WIC and SSDI are all broke and broken, it’s going to get worse as the Fed keeps printing fake fiat Fed notes “dollars.” What are you going to do when the checks stop or electronic payments into your account end? It’s all coming to an end, prepare while you can!!

Anonymous said...

It gets even better!
Just wait until your property tax bill comes due!
Due to the Kirwin commission mandates, it's going to increase a lot!
In Wicomico county alone, there are many homes in pre-foreclosure.
The misery will just keep coming!

Maryland is a welfare state and is broke thus the large tax increase coming.49th worst state to have a business in not because of the citizens but liberal rules and regulations they impose and the the worst customer service with state services.

Did you have a previous account. From what I have been able to find out, people who have had unemployment before are not having the issues. It is new accounts, the people who have never had it before. I'm not sure how accurate this information is. But everyone I know who has the money, had applied before.

Anonymous said...

Hogan is asked about it in his little conference. He says Maryland is the first state to re work their unemployment acct. And it is now working. So there you go.

THERE IS ABSOLUTLEY NO RESAON TO CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS!! Just vote for someone else. Why is THAT so hard???:

What about the extra $600 a week that unemployed people are supposed to be getting? Are they receiving that and if so, where does that money come from?

Anonymous said...

6:26 no one is getting anything yet. I think it is just a damn pipe dream to think that some entity is going to eat some green paper and sh-- out some cash to the tune of $600 a week. It is a myth at this point and the government just doesn't care.

Anonymous said...

I worked 40 hours a week @ $15 an hour cleared about 2k a month Now I’m clearing almost double that! I have no intention to go back to work until this runs out. It’s about dam time the working man got a break. Oh, and we’re saving another $300 a month on child care. Signed life is good!

I'm going to come take yours

They were devised to keep you from getting your money

5:44 My wife nor I have ever filed before. I filed in De she in MD. Got my first deposit from DE within 10 days and have had no problems since. My wife on the other hand waited 4 weeks before receiving her first deposit. Then another two weeks before federal kicked in. Md’s system is broke but instead of fixing it Hogan would rather bash Trump on CNN.

1:11 you don’t have to call. Use mobile benefits and do it online.

Anonymous said...

6:26 Yes I am receiving the extra $600.00. This is the federal portion and it kicked in about a week after state started. I am in DE and it has worked like a dream. No problems from day one.

Evening,

As the person who wrote this letter, I am heartened by these comments, Thank You. For both my wife and myself, working over 35 years, paying taxes on time, and never have applied every before, this bring in complete clarity, don't ever think the government is there to save you. They are not. Having gone throught 9-11, this seems worse, and exposes for me, the very poor leadership, in the state of Maryland. BTW, I have call Andy Harris every day for the past two weeks, left a message, not a single response.

Anonymous said...

Had an account a few years ago for a temp layoff. Not the last year or two.

Anonymous said...

I have gotten the 600 extra for the past 4 weeks.

Email or call your delegate. I emailed Anderton and at least got a response. They followed up a few days later to check on the situation. In the mean time, I got through, I called the local 334-6800 at 6:59 am. Immediately hit 1-2-1(for prompts) it hopefully will take you to a male voice who will then tell your number in que. I was then on hold for nearly an hour and half. The trick is to keep dialing and immediately press 1-2-1.

Do you have food? Please let us know. Joe, can you let us know how to help?

Anonymous said...

My God you're 100% right if very obvious that is what's going on

Anonymous said...

@6:51pm .....lmao u think 4k a month is a lot of money that's cute

Anonymous said...

The $600 federal money is a good send. My husband was getting $189 (after taxes) a week. Now its $789 a week, more than he made while working. In the last 5 weeks, we have gotten caught up on bills and are putting money back into our savings. The $600 ends 7/31, so until then savings can grow. Really is a dis-incentive to look for work, job search requirement is suspended, but he's still looking but his age 71 is working against him.

Anonymous said...

I'll go do that tomorrow 6:00. Thanks for the info

And that right there is only one of the reasons things get so mucked fup. What are ppl to do in between elections? Sit and suffer in silence?

Actually, that is something I would encourage you to do.

It is funny to hear how proud some people are because they make more than they ever have. It is sad that some of you don’t make much money even when you are working. It should wake you up in life and make you realize you need a better career path.

Anonymous said...

6:45 I’ve received my extra $600 a week for the last 5 weeks. Not sure where you’re getting your info from. But I thank my President for that extra $600.

Maryland is a DISASTER !!! And more to come , people have been over

a month & a half without ANY $$$$$ !!!! BOSS HOG !!!

So what is the worst state 5:26?

Anonymous said...

I'm assuming this poster's wife is under the normal retirement age of 62. Lets say the social security she gets would have to be disability payment. If this is the case she not only would not qualify for unemployment it would be fraud.

Anonymous said...

As her husband do you have an income? Did you receive unemployment? If no income, are you on welfare? I believe the Government should help in any way but you shouldn't always depend on Government funds. I do hope you get help - after all - taxpayers in MD pay plenty to do so.

I can't imagine the # of bankruptcies that will come along after this is over, mostly because of maxed out credit cards. No wonder lenders of all description are tightening up their funds. Before I would approve ANY loan the borrower would have to be working at the time of application.

Well put👍

My daughter has been waiting since March 14...does her webcert every week, weeks show "pending" the rest don't. She has a card, but not a penny. To top it off, today there's no webcert listed for her to file! This is outrageous!! My other daughter's shows as paid as of yesterday, but she still has no card. How does that help? Absurd. Neither one can get through on the phone lines, e-mails go unanswered, and there's no place to correspond with someone on the Beacon website, either! People need to eat and at least pay their major bills! Come on, Maryland, get it fixed! It's not only awful for so many people who've been waiting forever, but it's ridiculous that these claims are held up for so long and the website keeps having "glitches". I could almost believe that someone in the system is deliberately causing these issues!

No, they are NOT broken , they just don't want You to get it !!! Fact

They like sitting on that Big Pot of money to use themselves as they please !

Federal Govt needs to step in on Maryland Unemployment Disaster !!!

Let the damn Natl Guard run it & take it from Maryland Govt Disaster !!!!

Something HAS TO BE DONE !!! NO communication is NOT acceptable !! This Disaster has already been going on since March 15

Website should have a Window to type Messages in to send to state
More Servers Needed
More Phone system capability needed
Stop the Webcert Requirement during the Pandemic
Have 24/7 service staffed with people on phones & web

Common Sense !! But that is Hard to Find these days in GOVT !!!
