Punkin Chunkin Leaving Delaware For Illinois

It is official! The World Punkin Chunkin Championship is leaving Delaware. The team captains voted on a change of venue to the Village of Rantoul, Illinois. With 75% involvement, the vote was 70% YES and 30% NO. This is our event’s 4th change of venue since 1986. For over 33 years, we have called Sussex County Delaware our home but the chunk must go on. With many other Punkin Chunkin related events going on, there needs to be a World Championship.

We want to thank everyone for their support over the years. Most recently, we want to thank those that came forward in Delaware and Maryland in trying to keep the event on Delmarva. Unfortunately, our unique event requires large tracts of land. The Wheatley’s 600-acre property in Bridgeville, Delaware has served us well to date. We are very supportive of the land owner’s decision to not continue to host the event.

Our event will take place on the once known Chanute Air Force Base that was acquired by Rantoul when it was closed down in 1993. This property amongst their hospitality made their municipality an attractive location.

It has been our non-profit’s mission to conduct our annual event and give funds back to the community in the form of donations and scholarships for children. Since our inception, we have contributed over $1 Million Dollars in donations and scholarships. Our economic impact on the community has been incalculable drawing tens of thousands of spectators and participants from around the world.

We are currently planning the event to be on November 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Stay up to date by liking us on Facebook (@punkinchunkin) and visit us online at www.punkinchunkin.com.

I wish them luck and hope the people of Illinois enjoy that really neat event. GOD Bless.

We should start a new event. Wife Chunkin. That would be a real mechanical challenge around here.

Good riddance.

It didn’t suck for the thousands of people who attended. Geez

Gotta admit, a decommissioned Air Force base has lots of advantages.

Talk about a boring event. People actually go see a pumpkin get shot across a field?? GET A FREAKING LIFE. GEESH.

I fun family spectator event has been forced out of Delmarva because an ambulance chasing lawyer promised wealth to a volunteer of Punkin Chunkin.
Another fun attraction, "Slaughter House Farms" in Laurel De that donated thousands of dollars annually to "Operation We Care" has also been forced out of business thanks to greed from a volunteer and his lawyer

Pumpkins. Big deal. Be gone. No one cares.

Says the guy that goes bowling 3 times a week. Or whatever. Stamp collecting, who knows. The point being that to each their own. I never went, but I can see the attraction. Big mechanical things throwing stuff a long way. What's not to love? My grandsons would love it.

it's another excuse to be outdoors, eat BBQ, drink, socialize and have some fun.

Too bad; attended several and enjoyed them. Delaware's legal setup led to this. OTOH, Illinois at the beginning of November can be a mite chilly.

You people just don’t get it...TOURISM is what the shore needs...there isn’t much else for the shore to rely on...every time an event leaves the shore so goes tourism..you people are just plan stupid....no wonder so many like myself have left or are leaving...

@9:49, the problem is the tourists don't leave. Look around Salisbury recently? Tags from all 50 states and a trip through Walmart feels like one left America.

I'm not against some immigration and new blood but you can not replace the culture of the shore with foreign culture and keep the same quality of life.

@9:49 wtf are you talking about? The reason people are leaving is because of the drug and crime problems. The local leaders are licking the boots of Hogan and the millennium trend for progressive socialism. They are flooding the area with illegals and welfare entitlement. What exactly can you entice people with to want to come spend time here? Who wants to spend vacation/recreational time in a f'ing ghetto? It's not safe to be out and about after 10-11 at night around Salisbury. As far as pumpkin chunking thet allowed that to get out of control too quickly with the types of creations to shoot the pumpkins. It literally became a safety issue and liability to host

HAHAHA. I guess your not very athletic. Just sit and watch a pumpkin with a beer in hand. Great role model. But it's mechanical.

After all these years, Delaware has proven it is not big enough to sponsor this world class event anymore.

I'd love to hear what you think is entertaining. I'm sure many of us would think that is boring too. There were thousands that found Pumpkin Chunking was a cool event, and it had a national audience on TV. Geez, get over yourself.

What culture...drugs, no jobs, no industry, no reason to do anything more than drive through...the shore has been dying for 30 years...you born here’s hate outsiders but have nothing to sustain yourselves 🤣🤣

When it gets to Illinois, the Dems will find a way to tax it to death.

Good riddance

Hope they aim directly at Chicago
