Coast Guard, life jacket saves jet skier in Ocean City Inlet, Md

BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard rescued a man who fell off and became separated from his jet ski in Ocean City Inlet, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Ocean City were contacted by 911 dispatch at 5:07 p.m. and notified that a man reported, via cell phone, that he fell off of his jet ski and was unable to swim back to it.

Sector Maryland-National Capital Region deployed a 24-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Ocean City to respond.

Once on scene, the crew located and rescued the man approximately 100 yards from his jet ski. He was wearing his life jacket and had no reported injuries.

"We constantly urge people to wear their life jacket and have a communication device handy — this is a prime example of how they can save your life," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Maffioli, boat crew member during the case. "The guy said he was in the water for 30 minutes, which is a long time to have to tread water. If his life jacket was tucked under the seat and not on his body, there probably would have been a different more tragic outcome.

Conditions yesterday were terrible for boaters let alone a jet ski. Another idiot in Delaware capsized a 16 ft boat and died

What kind of cellphone was it? I need one that can do that!

The Coast Guard has an operating expense budget. Lifesaving is covered. By some people's logic, a beach lifeguard should send a bill to every person he or she rescues.

Glad to see a happy ending on the water for a change. Good lesson for everyone.
The inlet is not a very safe place for jet skis. Lot's of traffic coming in 4 directions and the current is unpredictable.

Then there's the occasional idiot that jet skis too close to the bridge and gets clotheslined by a fisherman's line.

The "Life jacket" kept the boater from being able to SWIM to safety! The shore was easily reachable if he knew how to swim. You can't swim in a current with one of those things on. Don't give too much credit to the life jacket.
