These dumpsters of old nuclear waste are costing taxpayers a fortune

They were supposed to be hauled away decades ago. They’re still here.

ROWE —
The nuclear plant deep in the woods of this Western Massachusetts town stopped producing power 27 years ago when George H.W. Bush was still president. It was dismantled, piece by piece. Buried piping was excavated. Tainted soil was removed. But nestled amidst steep hills and farmhouses set on winding roads, something important was left behind.

Under constant armed guard, sixteen canisters of highly radioactive waste are entombed in reinforced concrete behind layers of fencing. These 13-foot-tall cylinders may not be much to look at, but they are among the most expensive dumpsters in the country, monuments to government inaction.

Being a guard at a remote facility like this and being paid to mostly sit and watch monitors, then take a walk around the perimeter every few hours is a great government gig, paying at least $35,000 with benefits.

1:43 or we could leave it unguarded so that domestic terrorists could take it, someone could stumble upon it or any other number of situations?

Elon Musk can build several BFRs and send the spent fuel light years away into deep outer space

It is a death sentence.
Everyone knows the radiation cannot be contained.
Those who post guard at this facility are being bombarded by radiation.

Nuclear Energy is not safe.
Period.
The waste cannot be made safe.
Ever.

Try 100k plus. Fact.

Radiation can be and is contained every day. Material density and thickness are the two main factors in containment. I've worked on a few commercial nuclear power stations and even a refueling of one. That was 30 years ago and I'm not dead yet

But 1:22 you had the best of the best working there. NOBODY CARES about this location. NOBODY even checks on this situation. They post a guard and walk away. These tanks are leaking some. They have to be. They aren't supposed to hold waste for EVER.
