Too Few Young Americans Signing Up to Serve, Commission Says

Young Americans have a desire to serve their nation in some way, but too few are signing up to do so, according to a report by the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service.

“While service is encouraged by many families, schools, and communities, there is no widely held expectation of service in the United States. As a result, military, national, and public service is the exception rather than the rule,” commission Chairman Joe Heck, a Army Reserve brigadier general and former congressman for Nevada, wrote in the report.

“What we have found is that there is limited awareness of serving in the military. We are not getting enough young people who are inspired to join the military, to serve in national service programs, and what we want to do is increase that,” Commissioner Tom Kilgannon said in an interview on Sirius XM’s Breitbart News Sunday.

The commission was set up by Congress in 2015, to look at whether the nation still needs the Selective Service System, and whether women should also be required to register for it. In addition, the commission is looking at how to educate more young Americans on opportunities in military, national, and public service.

START THE DRAFT.

We used to have recruiters in schools and at various events but now they are seldom seen. If they start up the draft again I would be afraid today's youth would join the enemy.

No real incentive to sign up. Putting your life on the line to keep rich old people in power. We're not defending freedom, we are fighting nonsense wars over resources and money, none of which get back to those putting their lives on the line.

I actually support mandatory military service for all citizens. 2 year minimum. A volunteer military is easy to control and use. When everyone has a vested interest in it... those in power might not be so reckless with these brave soldiers lives.

What do you expect? You allowed generations to be indoctrinated in Government/Public schools...Not surprised here and you shouldn't be either.

Pay them a fair wage

Women wanted equal rights, so if they start the draft, I think it should definitely include women as well.

Who the hell wants to fight and die in a senseless war over who has more money and who wants to take that money...

Can't sleep till noon and sit around all day in a onesie sipping cocoa on grandma's couch when in the military.

Volunteering to enter the armed forces was at high levels when there was high unemployment. Now that jobs are plentiful, young people are not viewing military service as favorably, especially since the liberals are anti American now and have 0 respect for our defenders

Start the draft again. If it was good enough for us. it's good enough for them. A lot of them could use the discipline.
