Ocean City, Legislators Eye Stricter Special Event Zone This Session

OCEAN CITY — While no new bills have yet been introduced in the current General Assembly session, resort officials are looking to add more teeth in the special event zone legislation approved by state lawmakers last year.

For several years, Ocean City has been exploring ways to combat some of the illicit and reckless activity on roadways during vehicular special events. Out of those early discussions was born a desire to create a special event zone during specified sanctioned and unsanctioned motorized events, which required the approval of the General Assembly.

Last year, then-Senator Jim Mathias and then-Delegate Mary Beth Carozza cross-filed pair of bills aimed at creating a special event zone on roadways throughout Ocean City during the spring and fall motorized events and the bills breezed through their respective chambers and were ultimately signed into law by Governor Larry Hogan.

As a result, special event zones were implemented during most motorized event weekends. Among other things, speed limits were reduced on most roadways in Ocean City, resulting in significantly higher fines for offenders.

I think $575.00 in enough of a fine for speeding in a special event zone. Raising it to $1000.00 is just ridiculous. It would seem smarter to me to do away with special event zones. If anyone tried to get from Fenwick to the inlet parking lot during a special event. You would know it probably takes about two hours or more because of the bumper to bumper traffic caused by ridiculous low speed limits. It is just a money making scheme.

Just chasing people away

This special event zone nonsense is getting out of hand. The problem is you have too many boomers that think Ocean City is the Villages. It's a beach town not a retirement development.

It's a cesspool for rif raf. It is not the family oriented place they would have you believe.

Forget making special event zones $1000 fines, just ban all special events.

I've taken OC off my list of places to go. As a local who lives less than 20 miles away, and one who used to go to the beach almost daily when I was growing up, and used to go over there as an adult for dining, drinks, and Thrasher's french fries, I now find it is the most unfriendly town to visit. Nowhere to park, without paying big city downtown parking rates (think Honolulu), high prices for everything, and cops everywhere looking to fine the tourists for everything they can. Just isn't worth it anymore. And that's a shame. If the tourists that still go there feel welcomed by the city, then the tourists can have it. I want no part of it, or the tourists that pack the place so tight that no one can move. It is no longer a destination for me, my kids, or my grand kids. There's better, more friendly places to go and spend our money.

With the place packed so tight with people that will spend their money for anything, while being harassed by cops everywhere, OC has not even gotten close to diminishing returns. OC has a long way to go raising prices and fines and parking fees before the city tourists decide to go somewhere else. Go for it OC! Fine them to death! Those city tourists don't know any better. OC is just like where they are trying to escape from for a vacation. Its not really a vacation if its just like where they work. Sorry, I'm just a local, country bumpkin that thinks that is just stupid of them. Nothing wrong with OC capitalizing on their stupidity.
