She must have missed Sunday School a lot. Joseph & Mary were traveling to his native village because of a governmental decree, a census dictated by the emperor. They returned to where they were living after the baby's birth and completing the paper/scroll/papyrus work for the census.
As an example, if all the Puerto Rican descendants living in NY had to return to Puerto Rico for a headcount Occasional-Cortex also might find lodgings in short supply temporarily.
