Lies, Lies & More Lies

Folk Festival Study Confirms Smaller Crowds Than Hoped, But $20M Economic Impact

SALISBURY –
A new study on this year’s National Folk Festival is expected to help city officials and event organizers better understand its economic impacts.

Last week, the Business, Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) at Salisbury University’s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business released the first phase in an economic impact study of the National Folk Festival.

From Sept. 7-9, downtown Salisbury hosted its first National Folk Festival, a free, outdoor event produced by the National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA) that celebrates arts, culture and heritage through live performances, workshops, demonstrations, children’s activities and more.

And while the festival was accompanied by rain for most of the weekend, the study released last week estimates that more than 60,000 people attended the event, which generated $20 million in total economic impact.

Publishers Notes: While this is a great article, there is a LOT not mentioned. It's called investigative reporting.

I learned from a very reliable inside source that many staple restaurants throughout Downtown, (with exception of Roadie Joe's) lost between $20,000.00 to $25,000.00 by being told by Jake Day to make sure they stock heavily for a massive crowd, it did not happen.

While there are NUMEROUS aerial photos, none have been made available, which would clearly allow head counts proving the 63,000 Jake Day claims attended is a bold face lie.

Peter Franchot allowed, (some say illegally and I agree) a liquor license, (overriding the Wicomico Liquor Board) bars lost a small fortune as well. While these staple businesses have invested millions over the years and have struggled to survive, your local government brought in food and liquor and destroyed any hope for these businesses to profit.

The mere fact that they are now claiming this event created a $20,000,000.00 impact to Salisbury, you'd have to be mentally NUTS in the head to actually believe it. They LIED about the hotels being booked and when Jake Day was recently challenged on the hotel BS he back stepped and then claimed that everyone stayed in Ocean City Hotels instead, another bold face lie.

While the Dispatch article delivered only the facts they were TOLD, I have a serious problem with ANY one sided article and the failure to dig up the facts and truth. The media has become the mouth piece for leaders only, afraid to rock any boat in fear of retaliation.

That would be equivalent to $250,000 per person

If they're willing to lie, then they're willing to cheat. If they'll lie and cheat they will also steal. If they're willing to lie, cheat and steal with little things like a festival.....imagine what they're doing with the big important issues.

We have slipped into the far left rule of this country. It will never be the same again nor can it be reversed . This country is now considered doomed , just admit it . We can take it back but nobody wants to fight for our rights .
Yes it would involve blood shed , but I guess most of you want to be ruled and support the entitled , go for it idiots , I won't , I'm with Ted Nugent .

I disagree Joe. It’s quite possible the festival cost taxpayers $20 million in debt and wasted resources. Now that’s an impact.

beacon IS A JOKE made up of people who never been in business, just sit in rooms and philosophize about it while being paid bank by taxpayer money

$20,000,000 ÷ 60,000 people= $333/person spent.
I'm confused...
Is that a $20,000,000.00 profit or gross spent..
These numbers really do not mean anything..
How much was spent?
That's the numbers that really needs to be shown.

The sad sad truth of this whole Jake Day fantasyland is he truly believes all the bullshit he puts out there.

I thought the finances, including income and expenses, of city government were supposed to be public and subject to FOIA. Do you mean that I can't go to the government office building and request a summary of this whole affair?

I had a couple of beers at a downtown bar yesterday afternoon, and was told how the sales that weekend were disappointing at best. I did enjoy the festival though, and plan to attend the next two years- It would be nice if our public officials told the truth though.

@7:10 you're absolutely right. The travesty is the so called leaders have known it for years and are on a mission to rob and steal as much money as possible to secure themselves some type of safety net when the bottom falls out for the rest of us. I'm amazed at how gullible people are today and think they are secure and well of by mere numbers printed out on a piece of paper by bank that are controlled by the very ones robbing us all. Do you really believe your money is "federally" insured?? America is the biggest Ponzi scheme to ever happen

Jake Day is an A**. All these ideas about revitalizing downtown, and revitalizing Salisbury is a bunch of smoke and mirrors hoping to make people feel better about the crappy place they live. Without the University, Hospital ,and Walmart this place would be a ghost town. Until the city and county focus on luring REAL businesses into the area there will be no growth, and our youth will be forced to find decent employment elsewhere or face the fact that they will work a retail job for the rest of their life, live in an apartment or rent some crap house, pay the highest taxes and just get by. The American dream ? I think not. Wake up people ! Are we sheep or are we Americans demanding better for our children? Hold our elected officials feet to the fire to do what is best for the future of the area. By the people and for the people. Period.

Agreed. Beacon is a sham.

They figured most people in Wicomico county are not smart enough to do simple math. Remember they are smarter than you ask them I'm sure they would agree.

Joe: They come up with these outrageous figures for all events. Look at what they say the dog shows bring in. There is no way that there is all of these great financial boons.

I take it "impact" means in the red, dept accrued, loss. Hopefully that 20mil includes the fine for not having the attendance they guaranteed in the contract. Going to be a long long time before theres any money for infrastructure repairs. How long did it take for this kid to bankrupt the city?

From one who lives near where the Festival was held believe in $60,000 total during the total time it was held. I would be really shocked if it reached 500 that's right 500. We are so close to the festival and travel that area 3-5 times each day there was no one under those tents, no one milling about. I would say the only ones there were the homeless and drunks around this crime area, and the vendors. We even had to go by the Civic Center and their were very few like 4 vehicles in the parking lot and this was the location people were supposed to be carried from that parking lot to the festival. Nothing printed or photos prove the crowds still claimed by the city and Jake. Their were no crowds late morning, afternoon or even in the evening. We have even heard on this blog from employees who were asked to serve and help there was no such attendance. I know about 2-3 people who stopped by each day just to see what there was and told no one was in attendance, and the entertainment was doing nothing but standing around.

7:31: Is that really hard to imagine? A hotel for two nights would set you back that much. When we talk about revenue, it's about dollars spent, not profit. It's impossible to estimate profit, because each business calculates that their own way. So the only way government or 3rd party organizations can calculate $ impact is by using revenue.

How much longer can this BS continue to flourish? The sadist day was that Joe Albero did not win the rigged election. With his savvy and business success Salisbury would be on the road to recovery. Sad!!!

Who really did this analysis? Some freshman at SU while smoking marijuana. There is no way that much money was generated. Did they substract expenditures. Doesn't appear so. Rain had alot to do with it's some what failure but I believe the expectations where set to high. Salisbury is not OC. No beach no people.

Anonymous said...

Anyone can spin numbers. Regardless of what Jakie spins, its a failure! For shame of him to even mention OC (hotels), since Rickie can't get them filled during the regular "season".

Lather, rinse, repeat - its the only business acumen Jakie knows!

Anonymous said...

I don’t believe the economic impact was $20 Million!

Anonymous said...

Bottom Line: Ill planned, Poorly Executed, Money Pit led by a mayor who is in over his head for this position. Tax Dollars wasted by this Administration is unconscionable...

Anonymous said...

Fake Jake and Co. will never let that out, someone would have to file an FOIA request. But then the city would say there are 873 (just a number) pages at a cost of $4.75 (same) per page so the average Joe would not be able to afford the request, in simpler terms, make it to expensive for the average citizen to find out exactly what the city spent!

This is a great example of fake news. Anyone who attended this flop with half a brain knows this is a lie. My brother was a volunteer and he agrees that this is fake news at its finest.

Here's another thing...has there ever been anytime BEACON released an economic impact report that DIDN'T say whatever it was they were tasked with looking at was a rousing success? It's like BEACON is a hired gun to say "yup. this was great. Now go shut up". Funny that SU was heavily involved with the Folk Festival (their radio station was broadcasting it) and their own BEACON says it was great...

I want Day to release a P&L on this. If this event equated to a direct economic impact of 18,000,000 that would be great, but the math doesn't add up. It was stated that over 60,000 attended, but for the sake of this let's use 60,000. On the surface that looks like $300 per person. That number could be plausible if hotels were involved. However, out of 60,000 the article states only 40% of the 60,000 were from out of town (24,000) and out of that only 50% stayed overnight (12,000). So 12,000 people stayed in a hotel, ate extra meals, possibly bought more than one tank of gas. The math really starts to fall apart on this deal.

If these figures are true, the state of MD should see a nice bump in taxes, from Salisbury and the surrounding area, for those 3-4 days. I mean seriously, 6% (MD state tax) is $1,080,000. That's a BUMP that should raise some eyeballs, right? Someone should see it. Now before you start in, yes I know some items aren't taxed, but even if you assume 40% of those items bought with that 18million weren't taxed that still leaves over 10 million in taxable revenue which would equate to almost $650,000 in additional tax revenue. Please understand, I'm not pulling out pie in the sky numbers here, I'm using their math, not mine.

Again I ask though, where is the P&L (profit and loss) for this even Jacob Day? What did WE (the taxpayers) spend on this event? Everything, the tents, the acts, the stages, the overtime, the salaries, (including your directors salary), the electricity, the portapoties, the golf carts, the gators, the advertising, the city workers that had to get the area pretty before the event and clean it up after. Don't give me the economic impact without also telling me what it cost! You sound like my wife when she comes back from Kohl's stating she saved me $160! Show us what went out. All the planning over the 18 months or however long it took. If you want to prove your little event was successful, show us the numbers, ALL OF THEM.

My guess is that you have no idea what a P&L (you're probably Googling it right now) and you truly have no idea how much this thing REALLY cost. I say really, because you didn't factor in all the items I listed above and I'm sure I forgot some of the stuff you had done. It's our money Jacob, be the mayor we know you can be and show us how it was spent.

$6,666,666 per day? I don't think so.

Anonymous said...

It can and will be reversed. Give it time.

This in itself should be enough for Jake Day to resign or be voted out of office.

Why in the world would this clown keep Barbara Duncan employed after proving that she is a dismal failure in her job?

Why in the world would this clown hire John Tull as the city fire chief? He is just as much a dismal failure as Rick Hoppes was and just as uneducated. At least Barbara Duncan does have real credentials, but they are both failures.

Can anyone tell me what department head in da 'Bury is deserving of their position?

8:00 AM....If it is I don't want any part of it. They can sure screw things up. They mandate SS be paid and use the funds for whatever. Some will be surprised if they get a return on what Uncle Sam and certain dummies label "entitlement check". I would have rather handled that money myself, after all we are taxed to death.

I would like to see the proof that 3 million people looked at a photo per social media.

There is no way they can validate such a point.

It's Sunday afternoon December 16, 2018 around 2:48 PM and Allen Volunteer Fire Company ambulance was dispatched to 10780 Jones Creek Circle in Princess Anne, Summerset County because the Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Company apparently scratched.

Did you know that 99.9% of the Allen Volunteer Fire Company ambulance calls are dispatched to Princess Anne?

Did you know that 100% of the Allen Volunteer Fire Company ambulance funding comes from the Wicomico County taxpayers?

Did you know that 0% funding comes from the Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Company?

Did you know that 0% funding comes from the Town of Princess Anne?

Did you know that 0% funding comes from Somerset County?

Did you know that 100% of the revenue collected from the Ambulance billing goes directly to the Allen Volunteer Fire Company coffers?

Did you know 0% of the of that ambulance revenue goes back to the Wicomico County taxpayers?

Did you know that the Allen Volunteer Fire Company cannot justify having their own ambulance service?

This is about as dumb as the Fire Service Agreement between Jake Day and Bob Culver.

Talked to some of the hotels regarding rooms reserved that weekend. All reported that the occupancy rate was at best 40% for the event and most were one night transient rentals. 20 million dollars, 60,000 event goers. Who's blowing smoke? I posted some pictures here on the Sunday of the event. Only saw 2 of the 60,000 in the seating area by Rt. 13 and I believe these were workers. What's next in the works for Salisbury- Rollings Stones coming?

Oh boy more "affordable housing" aka government assisted living development being built on Merritt mill road. Before any of you idiots start crying this is the county limit, yes it is but this is the very area your childish mayor Day is boasting and including in his housing development boom/growth. He was down the street taking pictures at aydelotte farms grand opening. Salisbury you are screwed

THANK YOU

This weekend was the first I saw what was going on at Merritt Mill and then I reflected on the "rentals" construction going on off Beaglin Park Rd and wondered:

What a screwed up ridiculous community this is. All the born here's do is bash tenants and come here's while all their government promotes is building RENTALS. Your home ownership rate is less than 40% !

When I looked at a house on Emily Dr, a neighbor in that development stated that they wished the HOA had a non-rental clause, because the homeowners that lived there were tired of dealing with the slumlord owners that don't live there.

Your government does NOTHING to promote home ownership when all they rubber stamp is new construction of rentals.

The days of ripping off college student by overcharging them for a room is quickly ending, and you see more and more slumlords exiting the game and putting these dilapidated overpriced houses up for sale, after slapping some paint on that pig.ur

So while your Mayor is laser focused on a city block downtown the rest of your community burns and becomes a ghetto.

Interesting that no one is promoting or building single family homes.
All this community does it build rentals and section 8 housing.

Wicomico County still has a 8+% foreclosure rate

"Your home ownership rate is less than 40% !"

You are a friggin DUMB A$$!!! Haven't you been paying attention?? I've posted this over and over again on this blog. Home ownership in City of Salisbury is only 10% or less! Your stupid "40%" figure is 25 years old. Ask Slum Lord John Cannon!

How do I know it's less than 10%? I did a study using figures from the City BHZ/BPI/NSCC and used their registered rental properties and came up with close to 95% rentals in this city.

What you DUMB A$$ES are not including is the multiple apartment complexes in this ghetto town. Those apartment complexes are only being counted as one (1) property. Not the multiple rental apartments on the one property. Wake up you bunch of idiots.
