Man From PA Was Going The Wrong Way On Rt. 50: UPDATE

UPDATE:

US Route 50 at Naylor Mill Road has been reopened.

On July 19, 2018 at approximately 0153 hours the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack received a report of a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on the US Route 50 Bypass.  A few minutes after the first report of the vehicle traveling the wrong way, the Salisbury Barrack was notified of a collision in the area of WB US Route 50 and Naylor Mill Road.

Through the investigation it was determined a 2007 Toyota Rav 4 driven by David Geist, 75 years of age from Reading, PA, was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the US Route 50 Bypass when the Toyota struck a 2017 Chevrolet Trax driven by Kelly Lee McKinley, 21 years of age from Ocean City, MD.

Subsequent to the initial collision, the Toyota struck a Freightliner truck tractor pulling double trailers. The Toyota careened off the Freightliner and struck guardrails adjacent to the left shoulder before coming to final rest. The Freightliner was operated by Maurice Lamont Johnson, 42 years of age from Westover, MD.

The Chevrolet subsequent to the initial collision continued into the second trailer of the double trailers the Freightliner was hauling before both vehicles came to final rest.

Geist and McKinney were transported to PRMC by Hebron EMS to PRMC. Their condition is unknown at this time. Johnson was not transported with injuries from the scene to PRMC.

What you haven't heard about the accident on Rt. 50 is, what happened. It turns out the man pulled out of the Royal Farms on Rt.5 50 and turned left into the west bound lane/traffic.

He was able to get as far as the Naylor Mill Road area before being struck by a tractor trailer with double trailers. The accident was so severe, they closed down the bypass in that area and it still remains closed.

The image above is in fact the vehicle that was going the wrong way.

Thanks for details. None on boc or mdt.

That should buff out.

SHA need to close the crossing at White Lowe Road and Ocean Gateway.

The percentage of wrecks at that intersection has skyrocketed sense the opening of the Royal Farms because people are to stupid turn at that intersection as if lanes of US-50 were separated by a double yellow line.

Prayers to all who are involved..when you don't know where you are sometimes the choices we make to go a certain direction can have deadly consequences. Life cut to short.

Everyone leaving Royal Farms should have to turn right! Close the crossover!

I agree with 8:32.
I live on White Lowe Road. It is a really bad intersection.
There are merge lanes at the intersection, but most people are either too stupid or fail to notice them.

It is almost impossible on weekends, and at rush hour in the evenings to even think about crossing.

I usually avoid this intersection by taking the back roads around it. I agree with 8:32, this intersection really needs to be closed. It was poor planning when this Royal farms was built. There should have been a service road put there. It has become a death trap.

It's a poorly conceived intersection with some confusing features, especially after dark.

9:38 what's so confusing about it?

Not too surprised after seeing PA drivers in OC!
Unbelievable how they drive on Coastal Hwy. It's almost like the rules of the road in PA are completely different than anywhere else in the country.
They make right turns from the far left lane. Stop in the middle of the road to make turns. Ride down the bike/bus lane. They are completely oblivious to other drivers. Not saying that other drivers leave their brains on the mainland, but PA drivers win first prize for the worst drivers.

i agree, that crossover need to be closed. they did it in hebron because of the accidents

That Royal farms intersection is a death trap.

Poor planning to ever allow a store of any kind to open on that corner, very confusing especially at night!

Anonymous said...

I agree but WHY did DOT Allow it in the first placee.

Come on 1017 - any confusion here on the shore should raise a few SHA eyebrows. Whaleysville and Sixty-foot roads already come to mind and now this outside of the Royal Farms, middle of the night. Hell night-time with rain is a nightmare on Route 50....or anywhere East of Salisbury.

They drive the same in their own state too! They think the line you are suppose to stop behind at a stop sign is where they should start to apply their brakes. They are horrible drivers!

10:21 AM what a simpleton comment. Like people around here don't drive like a$$es. Any resort town has traffic issues because people are unfamiliar with the area and are lost. Your small town ignorance is showing.

8:32 is right.

Anonymous said...

WHY did SHA allow for such a dangerous intersection ? This lays at the feet of the SHA shame on them.

Anonymous said...

10:21 - I would add slower lower Del. drivers to the PA list - zip situational awareness, and are just oblivious to everyone and everything

The intersection at Old Railroad Road and Route 50 is even worse. There was yet another accident there yesterday afternoon.

12:17 while you are correct that people in all areas including here drive like idiots, having lived in OC for 10 years and driving from midtown to downtown almost everyday, I have to agree that the drivers from PA are the worst I have ever seen. Some of the bonehead moves they have done defy description(including turning across 3 lanes of traffic, stopping in the middle of the road, running lights, etc.). While being unfamiliar with the area can add to stupidity, the greater stupidity is doing stupid things in traffic when the next light and intersection is less than 4 blocks away.

Anytime that I observe any vehicles in Wicomico County that are bearing PA, NJ or NY tags, I can only hope they are just passing through. We don't need anymore of them moving here.

The man's age could be a factor in this case

The intersection is poorly situated and creates genuine problems because the view in each direction is obscured by the guardrails, and traffic on 50 heading east is coming around a bend. Drivers going west are coming from a higher speed limit zone and having Bus. 50 traffic merge just before the intersection.

Those leaving the store and trying to head east have to cross two busy westbound lanes to reach the median, which is not generous, before trying to find a gap in eastbound lanes coming full tilt around a curve. In addition they may have to face an eastbound driver trying to cross the westbound lanes as they try to get to the median.

The intersection needs remediated, perhaps by one direction turn lanes before and after the present intersection. This problem will not improve with procrastination and delay.

Shame on WICOMICO SHA.

Royal Farms could always been required to foot the bill to have installed a traffic light/pay a monthly fee. That intersection is a death trap.

Are you serious?

i went to PA once, those people don`t know how to drive in there own state so why should we expect them to know how to drive in maryland.

Anonymous said...

The decision is not made at a district level but the state level. As you can see all of the wrecks happen when people drive in stupid ways you can't re engineer stupid

Anonymous said...

I absolutely, completely agree with 9:16 am - close that crossover - everyone should have to turn right.

10:21, you just described local drivers in Salisbury, MD. You can NOT go from point A to point B without some good citizen pissing you off within two or three minute's. At that time the fun begins and continues until you reach your destination.

The man is my grandfather have a little respect please.

Anonymous said...

What is the status on the dude that caused the wreck?

Anonymous said...

You tell them honey! They are just ignorant asswipes! That crossover should of been closed. Sorry for these rude people Abigail.

Senile old bastard shouldn’t have been behind the wheel. How about you have a little respect for the people he hit?

Anonymous said...

I’m sure they do! Have respect for both sides.
