OCDC Installs First Light as part of Downtown Alley Lighting Program

OCEAN CITY, MD – Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) recently installed its first light as part of the Downtown Alley Lighting Program at The Kite Loft, located at 511 Atlantic Avenue. The light was installed in the rear of the store to help light up Washington Lane, the alleyway that runs parallel to the boardwalk.

The OCDC, in cooperation with the Town of Ocean City and the Ocean City Police Department, created the voluntary pilot program to install new light fixtures along alleyways in downtown Ocean City. The intent of the program is to heighten crime prevention and also improve public safety for pedestrians and bicyclists by lighting up the alleyways.

The first phase of the pilot program is targeting Washington Lane, between 4th and 10th Streets, which was identified by the police department as a priority after reviewing calls for service trends. Business owners that qualify for this program will be reimbursed by OCDC up to 50 percent of the cost of purchase and installation of light fixtures, up to a maximum of $500.

“We are happy to see that The Kite Loft participated in this great crime prevention program,” commented OCPD Patrol Commander, Captain Michael Colbert. “We’re confident that this new light will have an impact on the calls for service in that area and will make pedestrians and bicyclists feel much safer.”

In order to qualify for reimbursement, the property must abut Washington Lane, between 4th and 10th Streets, and the fixture must be an LED energy efficient light and comply with Town of Ocean City standards. Participation is first come, first served until funds have been expended. Business owners interested in the program should contact OCDC at 410-289-7739 or inquire@ocdc.org.

Personally speaking, OC is an absolute disaster. I've lived here on the eastern shore all my life, and OC is a money pit, overly regulated, to much 'rif raf', and run by scoundrels. The OC governing council is full of corruption and its affiliated departments within all sectors are a reflection of this observation.

My advise is to stay clear of the Town, if you know what is good for you.

To 6:14 - I agree. I used to have a condo and so I know all about the inner workings. The water bills are the highest in the state. So are the real estate taxes, especially if you are not a permanent resident. And - oh- how the politics are so hostile. I was glad to sell my property and get the _ell out of there if you can get my drift.

Maybe the Mayor can call the Governor and have all of the streetlights on the Rt 50 bridge fixed.

"Nobody goes to Ocean City anymore. It's too crowded." (Apologies to Yogi Berra)

The Mayor seems to get by nicely. I understand that he moved in with his RE girlfriend at his Harbor Island condo.

No time for the crumb snatchers.

If nobody goes, why is it so crowded? (Apologies for me being stupid)

"An amusing anecdote states that baseball great Yogi Berra was once asked whether he wished to have dinner at a highly-regarded, very popular restaurant, and he replied with a remark combining wisdom with contradiction: 'Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.'"

I detect more than a little sarcasm there.

Yeah 1252 - it is a shame. Overbuilding and the continuation of demolishing old, replacing with new (45th street 2nd time replacements).

Its funny and sad at the same time that a town will ring that money towel dry from locals - but cannot figure out how to get hotel rooms filled during mid week.

Funny and very sad indeed!
