MS-13 gang member known as 'Animal' sentenced to 40 years in prison over killing of 15-year-old boy

A member of the notorious MS-13 street gang known as "Animal," who admitted to the 2015 killing of a teenage boy in Massachusetts, was sentenced to 40 years in prison, officials said Tuesday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts announced that 23-year-old Joel Martinez, who went by the street name of "Animal," will be subject to deportation once he's released from federal prison.

Martinez pleaded guilty in December to RICO conspiracy and admitting to stabbing 15-year-old Irvin Javier de Paz Castro to death on Sept. 20, 2015, according to prosecutors.

I have tried over the years to equivocate the sentence vs the crime for murder. I am not convinced we have yet arrived at where we need to be not only as as sentence, but as a deterrent for this terrible crime. Once murdered there is no return to life. The family and friends suffer daily from this tragedy. However, the murderer is not. I must submit, although with some reserve, to suggest, "A life for a Life". In the case of school shootings and such attacks, I have no reserve at all - A life for a life regardless of age. There must be a deterrent for the shooters, not the gun.
