All Md. Casino Money May Go To Education

Maryland lawmakers voted Friday to give voters the option to direct all of the state’s casino profits to K-12 public education, instead of reserving some of them to balance the budget.

The state’s principal teachers’ union, the Maryland State Education Association, reported that Maryland has appropriated a total of nearly $2 billion in casino funds to budget balancing and away from education since 2009, reported The Washington Post. The “lockbox” law would inhibit future Maryland lawmakers and governors from using any casino funds to balance the budget.

The House of Delegates passed the legislation after receiving a unanimous approval from the state Senate.

If enacted, the measure would incrementally increase the proportion of casino funds directed to education until fiscal year 2023, when all of the funds would be allocated there.

All that money, $2 billion, and my taxes have not gone down a cent!

Political gimmick. Won't make a difference. If all the casino money goes to education then they will reduce the amount of general fund going to education. They did the same with the lottery money years ago. If they want to provide more money for education get rid of all the administrative overhead costs.

This situation demonstrates how difficult it is to get the State Government to use funds in a way that benefits its citizens.
Relieve our property tax burden (used to finance public education on a local level).
Stop using it to "balance the State's budget" which is full of waste, fraud, and criminal extortion.

Good, take a look at the relationship between education funding and incarceration rates throughout the country. As education funding increases incarceration rates decrease. Bad news for all the "for profit' prisons we so cherish in America.

Well expect taxes to rise then!!! Mark my words and you read it here first!!!!!

Just more smoke and mirrors.. For every dollar that gambling contributes to Education, the lawmakers reduce their funds budgeted for Education by the same amount. Politics at it's finest (or worse).

Just moving the walnuts around to fleece the unwary.

Education funding does pretty well in MD. Let's bring back the Drill Academy for those who disrupt so those who want to learn can move ahead with much less drama and disruption.
