This morning your local one sided media announced a new 10,000 sq. ft. restaurant coming to Salisbury, directly across the river from Brew River. Now let me explain a little something to you that your local news DIDN'T tell you.
I've leased 10,000+ sq. ft. commercial space. ANYONE who knows what 10,000 sq. ft. actually means knows the image above is a LOT more then 10,000 sq. ft.. So why is this an issue, because ANYONE who travels Riverside Drive and or travels through that 5 point intersection knows that when you pack that exact corner with a multitude mixed use commercial/residential space it is going to be literally impossible to pull out of that massive parking lot and make a left hand turn.
All anyone has to do is research the former owners of this property to understand the Good Ol' Boys getting what no one else could've ever dreamed of and that is exactly why that property sat empty for decades.
OK, so let's also picture ourselves heading down Riverside Drive east bound trying to get to business Rt. 50. Why hasn't anyone thought about the TWO traffic lights at Mill Street and Rt. 50 being RED? You do realize the roundabout will be at a 100% stand still while those lights are red. Now add this new development into the mix. People fighting like mad just to get into any spot they can from ANY of the 5 directions to the roundabout.
Ladies & Gentlemen, it doesn't take a genius to figure these things out in advance but what you are going to experience is going to be disastrous.
To the people who were interviewed who said this will be great for local economic development, REALLY? More $3.00 an hour jobs, more empty retail space and customers who refuse to return because they don't have a half hour to wait to get out of the parking lot. The Economic Development statement has been so dumbed down locally to a point where people actually believe retail is positive for a community. No, manufacturing and distribution is Economic Development. Creating great paying, long term jobs are Economic Development.
Finally, since this structure is a lot more then 10,000 sq. ft. can we please demand that your local media explain what the game plan is for the rest of the space on this property. My guess is that the alleged 10,000 sq. ft. is about 10% of the overall space, so you only got 10% of the real story.

That's were Brew River Should have Been !
shhhhhhhhh
Want the local economy to improve? This is what is needed. Things to attract people to the area like this is what must come first. A large, good-paying company is not going to bring jobs into the area unless the area has appeal for its potential employees. Please stop complaining about things that are meant to liven up the area. I, for one, am excited about this. It means more things to do locally, meaning I will be spending more time and money in Salisbury vs driving to other towns in the area for entertainment.
So let me get this straight from Mr. know it all, You are saying this building will be the size of a standard Walmart? (100,000 sf.) Wrong again Albero!
9:09, What an Idiot. WalMart is a ONE story building. This is at least THREE and as mentioned they'll even have a ROOF TOP dining area. Man, some people here, (and I'm pretty sure I know who 9:09 is) are pretty dense.
Jake's so good at urban planning, that he's never done it before, and had to get a job from Daddy at Perdue lol
Joe by the descriptions I can't picture where the roundabout is proposed.
I Agree 9:08 !! Very Well Said !!
anybody want to see what a catastrophe just the construction of a round a bout would be?....I was there last week when both bridges were up for a tug boat when schools were letting out....it was horrible ! Back ups everywhere, every direction....I'm sure this happens often, but just imagining how long it takes them to construct anything is another nightmare.
They don't care about any of you, haven't you learned that???? All that matters is money, tax money... It is your problem if you can't get into or out of a parking lot, even if the city caused the congestion in the first place... Maybe they want more problems so they can get the police involved for more tickets to make more revenue... Since they can't and won't investigate crime and always ask us for help to do their job...
Just like the Village of five points in Delaware at the beaches, it is a mad house, non-stop traffic problems, accidents and deaths galore, and now after 10 to 20 years of it being so bad, and getting worse, they now want to try and fix the problem but can't becasue without a bridge spanning the whole length of the highway, they can't fix the problem easily, and now if they do fix the roads, they have to shut down areas to do so, which will hurt businesses... (Like how it took SBY 3 years to put in one side of the roads sidewalk)...
This is what will happen here in SBY... I mean you want to see how smart these ass hats are, go look at that new fence they put up on the highway on 13 near La tolteca and such, they put fencing right over top of manholes you would have to access to fix something, so now you have to take down the fence to access the man hole cover... And you think these people are smart enough to run a city???? They are not smart enough to break out of an open field...
Man, some people here, (and I'm pretty sure I know who 9:09 is) are pretty dense.
January 30, 2018 at 9:28 AM
Yessir, you are correct. And they all like to come to your blog and show off just how dense they are. A good paying company will not come here unless there is appeal for potential employees? First time I have heard that. Usually it's the infrastructure for the company and what kind of tax rate they can muster out of an area.
ANY company will think twice about coming here until the high crime rate is addressed. And then you have to look at the employee pool. Education, work history, transportation, etc.
And don't forget, at one time in history this area HAD good companies. What happened to them? Where are they now? Even if this area could snag a good company, could they keep it? With the current atmosphere, I think not. Smallsbury HAS to address the crime and clean up that area in more ways than one.
I really wish good paying jobs could come here. But they won't. What is the incentive? What are the cons? Good companies need intelligent and postitive workers. Do you think they wil find enough here to fully staff any business?
And what if a company stumbles across this blog and see the comments from locals? Or if some of their reps decide to check out that area at night? Getting robbed or propositioned will probably not instill a favorable opinion to more their company there.
No way in hell would I ever consider going to the downtown area. I don't feel it is safe, and he wants to bring in section 8 housing. The traffic is a nightmare and round about will make it worse. It stinks from the nasty river and Perdue processing plant and he wants to do a rooftop restaurant lol. And parking is another nightmare and again he wants to use that for section 8 housing, plus you have to pay for parking.
Imad, from cactus taverna is developing it. He is hardly a good ole boy. Do some research before you start posting this crap. The numbers you mention are his first phase . The 10k is his new, second restaurant. Something we desperately need
Joe,
I'm not sure I understand the point you are trying to make. Are you against the building, the size, the owners, the mayor or the roundabout? Or all of the above.
We NEED to revitalize Salisbury, yet every time someone tries, the naysayers always tell us why they shouldn't or that it won't work.
Progress is often made by proving the detractors wrong.
if we keep pushing the developers out via public outcry, our city will continue to die.
Berlin was a lost cause years ago until the Atlantic Hotel owners decided it would be the cornerstone of a now booming economic expansion. It can also be done here.
And as far as the round-a-bout, when the one in Fruitland was built, you would have thought they were going to build a devil worship center.
Look how well it works now.
Just sayin'.
Good paying jobs bring people in, not renters, but potential homeowners, people commuted to the communities, tax payers contributing not draining. This sort of thing does well when you have a healthy economy & disposable incomes to support it. Bottom line is responsible people go where the steady jobs are. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of part time jobs with an unfavorable turnover rate.
The real winner here will be the architect and builders.... what this town fails to understand, there is nothing to attract people to the area....Lets see, we have the Ward Museum we Have a ball stadium and a Civic Center.... The only 3 Major Players in the Work Force is PRMC, SSU and Perdue...... So I read the article about this new complex.... one thing caught my eye in the article, it talked about delis, coffee shops and pizza place... Downtown already has all three, people in the area have only so much expendable cash....
Just like the Village of five points in Delaware at the beaches, it is a mad house, non-stop traffic problems, accidents and deaths galore, and now after 10 to 20 years of it being so bad, and getting worse, they now want to try and fix the problem but can't becasue without a bridge spanning the whole length of the highway
Oh Lord, could you be any more dramatic? And incorrect. Traffic is heavy during the summer months just like any other beach town. Deaths galore? Not hardly. 5 points is a mess that's for sure. Locals call it malfunction junction. But I have yet to see dead bodies strewn about to suggest deaths galore.
1101-Another restaurant is what the area needs? LOL
10:37 Don't worry all will be well,we have a folk festival coming.
11:04, I knew some Idiot would come on here defending the Mayor without even trying to understand what I had stated in the post.
REVITALIZING Salisbury is NOT adding structures that ignore manufacturing and distribution. You snowflakes actually believe adding bars and restaurants are revitalization, wow! FUNNY how you Idiots forget where you came from by ignoring the very bar/restaurant owners who have been here through thick and thin, good times and in bad like, Brew River, Market Street Inn, Roadie Joe's, MoJo's and so forth. Nah, instead, let's put all of them out of business and instead add new competition, all of which there's nowhere near enough money in Salisbury to keep them all alive, DUMMY!
Pushing developers out???? NAME THEM! You mean the same developers and companies who's names are constantly on all of the Good Ol' Boy projects! Take the 2 hour free parking lot next to the Library. The 1st floor was be leased for 20 or 30 years by the City of Salisbury. Rather then paying the $1.00 to own 1/2 of the GOB, Salisbury taxpayers will now be thrown into LEASING space for a Good Ol' Boy FRIEND to pay for the entire purchase and build out of that entire project, not forgetting the AFFORDABLE HOUSING units that will be on the upper levels of that project.
You IDIOTS wouldn't know economic development if it smacked you right in the face. As for Berlin, SALISBURY IS NOTHING LIKE BERLIN and never will be. You people are far too stupid to see progress and how to do it right. All Salisbury elected officials are interested in is how they can help their friends, Good Ol' Boys.
Finally, the Fruitland roundabout. WHAT AN IDIOT! There's no traffic light within a mile of that roundabout, you Idiot! Salisbury will have TWO traffic lights stopping up that area. Man, you snowflakes need to READ what is written.
11:13, You know what, I hadn't even thought about bicycle or jogging traffic! 1 parking space for every 4 residents is what Jake Day sold to the state of Maryland for the new construction in the City. SO, if what Jake claimed to the state is true, HOW will bikers and joggers get through that intersection without a specific right of way? Then add, what about at night. You can't have it both ways Jake Day. Admit it Jake, you're a LIAR, at least to the state anyway.
It was better here when peopled stayed home saved their money and minded their business. All this whining about there being something to do. Look what that has already gotten us. A whole lot of charming nothing from one end of the city to the other in all directions.

Which one? There are 3 of them lol
Calling your readers "idiots", "stupid", and "dummy". What a way to run a news blog.
DUH....turn RIGHT out of parking, plenty of alternate routes if traffic is bad to the left! DRAMA QUEEN!!!!
My wife works for the city. Apparently city is up to its games again. Behind closed doors the city changed parking lot usage restrictions for another lot, close to here. Same thing they did for fire house redevelopment.
Once again; city sells off a parking lot for pennies to good ole boys with the promises of affordable housing. Then city lets good ole boys do whatever they want. Good ole boys get land cheap, city gets broken promises.
Who are "the good ole boys"?
908 and 1001, really? Where do people without manufacturing jobs get the money to go out to eat at rooftop restaurants? If there are no good paying companies to work for, why would anybody want to move here and buy a house? You've got the cart before the horse, there.
Jake should be inviting companies to open up here and operate at least 10 years TAX FREE, and tax all businesses HALF what housing is taxed at. When they all build and open up, they will bring in many of their own people and others who need work will flock here to cash in, pay taxes, and spend paychecks at rooftop restaurants.
Get it now?
When you spout a lie, it all becomes lies. $3.00 an hour jobs? That's an illegal wage, and you know it. Embellish your post with lies, and its not a credible post. Will you never learn?
2:30, OBVIOUSLY you are a closet snowflake living in your Mom's basement. You see, IDIOT, waiters, waitresses and Bartenders make the $3.00 an hour wage, fool. You know, the type of wages that Salisbury is attracting with bars and restaurants. Man, some of you people are just plain stupid and uneducated.
News flash.......A new 10,000sqft restaurant next to new section 8 housing......good luck with that one folks. Lets take a look at the city marina that we just had to have. I've never seen more that a half dozen or so boats in it. My brother interviewed for the GM job there several years ago. He is some one who has major experience in running marinas in places like downtown Annapolis. He was absolutely horrified at the idiot conducting the interview. The guy had no idea of what qualifications were need to run such a place. My brother was bombarded with questions (and yes even riddles) that had nothing to do with the basics of running a marina. So here we are with a marina with no income that the city is paying maintenance, utilities, and banking costs from the initial investment. This is what happens when the good ol boys think they can run a town. A few get rich and rest (tax payers) get screwed.
Is John Cannon involved in this mess also ? (I didn't read any comments other than the 9:09 idiot)
More lipstick on a pig... My daughter and her 4 cousins all got their degrees and got the hell out of this sty!
Good 'Ole Boys = Organized Crime (on a local level)
This organization usually consists of several (if not all) members who are freemasons / elks / moose / so on.
Fraternal organizations where secret meetings can take place without much fanfare from the public.
Messages are passed down to local levels about federal funding for pet projects, how to apply, so on in these organizations.
Secret organizations are as American as apple pie.
They are the way rich people remain rich people.
After the round about I think a bridge over the river say into nithsdale would be awesome. That would allieviate some of the traffic congestion.
"When you spout a lie, it all becomes lies"... Mission statement of the democratic party.
10:25 AM you mean route 50 and someone already took out a section of the new fence. that didnt take long.
@9:06 AM But Brew River bought their lot from the Cuty of Salisbury for only $25,000 from former Mare Barry Tilmon. Sweet deals.
3:42, actually, 9:08 is spot on.
Plus got a free paved parking lot and more than its share of police coverage.
Plus got a free paved parking lot and more than its share of police coverage.
There are no large company good paying jobs coming here. Just build more Golden Corrals and fast food joints. The few nice places we do have are full of schmoozing realtors, lawyers and wino Dr. Wives and people that like to think they are the mover and shakers.
You people really have missed three valuable points. 1) perdue when its in full processing mode during the summer months is intolerable. 2) I have a relative that's in the pest control business and he has been called to try and help brew river with their cockroach infestation with no significant results and to this day you can't osy him to eat there after what he's seen. That's not even bringing up the ridiculous rat problem they have from perdue being less than 100 yards from the front door. 3) look at the actual clientele that frequents brew river, especially after 11 pm. Any local will tell you there's a cutoff time to vacate the establishment if you want to avoid Salisbury's majority thug nightclub scene. Is this what you really think Salisbury is in need of? You're already on thin ice with the police ranks do you truly believe that the overwhelming criminal element won't take over this location as well? They've done it at every place in town. I give it a month before they have their first violent crime or shooting
Why don't you start a business with good paying jobs, Joe. You say you have all this money and experience. Put up or shut up.
4:39, Unlike you, I did own a very large manufacturing and distribution company that employed thousands of people. I owned a chain of upscale billiard rooms, a bar and restaurant that also employed a lot of people. I retired at 40 years old, almost 16 years ago. I did my share, I paid the price, I worked 18 to 20 hours a day. I took ALL of the risks and I very fortunately was very successful. You pansy ass snowflakes love to challenge people like me, (and our President) while you anonymous pansies live in your momma's basement. Now why don't you challenge me on something real for once. Oh, I also ran for Mayor. I put my money where my mouth is and I do not hide behind anonymous. Come on, I'm waiting. Bring it on rainbow child.
15 MINUTES OF MY HALF HOUR DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK IS ME HELD UP AT THIS INTERSECTION. TRYING TO TURN FROM 50 CAN HAVE YOU STUCK ON 50 WITH TRAFFIC COMING. ADDING MORE BUSINESS AND VEHICLES WITH OUT FIXING THE TRAFFIC ISSUES IS NOT SMART. SHA REALLY NEEDS TO STUDY THE TRAFFIC HERE BEFORE ANYTHING IS DONE
Hey Brian, quit shouting. Take caps lock off. It’s basic writing etiquette
Good ole boys = Palmer Gillis, son Bradley, others. But start there.
What people dont know, is that property was surveyed for a number of different purposes. One was a competing hospital having a set of clinics right down the street from PRMC. Another was a local restaurant owner that was proposing a fine dining establishment... but i guess when the city wants to make Gillis Happy, they push others out of the way... btw, how much of Salisbury does Gillis own thru backdoor deals with the city?
That land they will build on is nothing but marsh. I can't wait to see it sink. Why do we need more office spaces. They are more than enough scattered around Salisbury that have been empty a whole decade. Take for instance the land the volunteer firecompany wants to build on 800 Snow Hill Road. Empty more than a decade when Barnone was there.
Come on, I'm waiting. Bring it on rainbow child.
January 30, 2018 at 5:10 PM
lol I think you need a vacation Joe. Comments are getting to ya. lol
Does the 'bury need another restaurant? Maybe; maybe not. In ideal circumstances waterfront dining attracts more upscale diners. The view from Brew River toward town is more appealing than from town to the west with its industrial scenery. And the river is no prize; no wonder the firemen won't even allow the unused fireboat to get wet there.
The undersized roundabout Jake is enamored with looks like it will abut this parcel, causing even more congestion at any already fatally flawed location.
It's been a while since I was at Cactus Taverna but it was enjoyable. It's easily visible directly on a highly traveled road and pretty easy to get in and out. Those advantages will not be present by the midget roundabout.
Perhaps a good location for a bike repair shop since the 'bury is handlebar to handlebar congested.
Next up: Jake's Triathalon featuring a swim in the river from Shad Landing to the North Prong; survivors would ride bikes from Jake's mini roundabout to the Fruitland roundabout to the Wor-Wic roundabout back to Jake's Folly 3 times before running a marathon to OC where they could relax. Of course, Jake did this during basic training; that's where he got the idea.
We're done with triathlons in Cambridge, have fun with that.
My question is how do you stress trying to develop such a useless location of riverfront property to attract higher end clientele in one breath and the next propose section 8 housing a quarter mile away?
3:41 PM you have not been paying attention. obama wanted to provide ghetto the opportunity to live in high end neighborhoods. jake must have read the memo.
I know...I'd rather look at an abandoned empty lot when I'm on my way home from work. Much more appealing.
And how about synchronizing the lights before you do anything.
hey 900, the city is gonna fill in the marsh with excess sludge from the wastewater plant
341-This is what happens when you elect a failed architect turned failed urban planner, as mayor. There's no planning, it's haphazard, akin to throwing a bowl of spaghetti on the wall and seeing what will stick. It's why the kid jake spent hundreds of thousands of his Daddy's money, to get an education he's never used, and ended up schlepping at Perdue.
820-Empty lot? Why not use the liberal phrase for that, I think they refer to it as "green space"? Enjoy looking at "Available for lease" signs in the near future at that empty building.
People are leaving because of crime which is increasing in number and violence levels
Jake day you were quoted at one point in saying that your plan was to try and turn Salisbury's downtown into a Baltimore inner harbor clone. I'll give you credit you've definitely turned into a little Baltimore with all the drug problems and crime
Not
It will go belly up inside 2 years...Salisbury doesn't need more restaurant's. What it needs is someone with the balls to really crack down on crime vs. someone who just wants to keep the poor and uneducated oppressed.
$3.63...but with tips must make minwage or employer has to cover the difference.
102-So, it's the employer's fault the employee has no marketable skills? You get paid three and change for a reason, LOL
