Neighbors say there was nothing they could do as they watched a seven-year-old boy get mauled to death by two pit bulls.
'No one knew what to do. Probably 15 people just watching it happen... just screaming,' a resident of the Lowell, Massachusetts neighborhood in which the incident took place on Saturday evening told the Boston Herald.
Meanwhile, the deputy superintendent of the unidentified boy's public school district said in a statement: 'We mourn the loss of a vibrant member of the Lowell Public School community who will be greatly missed.'

No one had a CCW or a gun. MA has similar gun laws to MD. May issue state.

How do you watch a child die and not intervene? I would have gotten torn up defending that child. And then I would have personally killed both dogs.
Absolute shame, jumps a fence for his baseball and is killed in the worst way. May he rest in peace.
You think the answer to this would have been someone shooting at dogs as they attack a child? What happens when you shoot the kid by accident? Go down for manslaughter?

8:39 AND you are the ones that are wrong. You both probably own these vicious dogs. Pit bulls should be eliminated from this earth.
To 8:59 The child was facing certain death and if I had my pistol I would have certainly risked shooting the dogs as opposed to standing and watching the child get dismembered by pit bulls. No judge or jury would convict a person who made an attempt to save the child using a handgun.

-77% of the fatalities involved a family member or friend
The most frequent breed that bites are Chihuahuas. The difference is that they lack the physical capability to inflict catastrophic damage.
Please make an informed choice when you purchase a pet, hundreds of people are dead because owners assumed it would never be their dog doing the killing.
High risk breeds require an experienced owner, constant training and reinforcement, and vigilant supervision of the dog. You must monitor who is around these pets at all times, absolute trust of any dog can never be taken for granted.
California has the right idea....no more selling puppy mill dogs. Buy from a breeder that knows the temperament of the animals because they have the pups mom and dad. Eventually this would help to do away with vicious breeds. Going to the shelter is always a good idea and they do a background check on the owner. Plus....after puppy mills become illegal the risk lowers for vicious dogs because people are not going to pay a fortune for a big mean dog and they will eventually be less and less of them showing up in dog shelters.
I'm sick of seeing huge pitiful dogs chained to trees in back yards of sad neighborhoods.
