Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee paid opposition research firm Fusion GPS to compile the “Russian dossier” that triggered an FBI investigation into possible collusion between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and the Russian government, according to a report Tuesday by the Washington Post.
A Republican had contracted first with Fusion GPS, and Clinton and the DNC continued to fund Fusion GPS’s work, the report says.
According to the Post:
Mark Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.
After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community …
Before that agreement, Fusion GPS’s research into Trump was funded by a still unknown Republican client during the GOP primary.
The Clinton campaign and the DNC, through the law firm, continued to fund Fusion GPS’s research through the end of October 2016, days before Election Day.

No, the timeline does not support your theory. McCain was not aware of the dossier until after November. My guess is that the campaign of Jeb Bush is the culprit.

I heard it was someone named Paul Singer. I used google and the only thing I could come up with was a famous hedge fund manager.
I have a hard time condemning John McCain for his actions in Washington the past 2 years. He's a veteran that served this country admirably. But I'm sorry he has got to go. He has done more to ruin this country than half the democrats in Washington. John McCain please do us all a favor and just go away. You're going to end up embarrassing and disgracing yourself. That's not the way most Americans want to remember you.
I heard Paul Singer also. He's a hedge fund manager and a big time Republican contributor. Trump had a lot to say about hedge fund managers and tax loopholes that he would close. It would make sense that Singer a billionaire would try and dig up dirt on Trump at the time.
