A Viewer Writes: For Sale/Lease Signs All Over Salisbury

Joe,

I used to live in Salisbury, I had to move due to lack of work. Last week I was back in Salisbury taking care of some odds and ends and I couldn’t help but notice all the orange SVN signs all over the place. At one intersection, I counted six properties with huge signs within view.

My background is in real estate/leasing and construction; so I certainly understand the need to advertise and fill vacancies. If a person is at least somewhat familiar with Salisbury, they know there are a ton of empty warehouse and office space available. And if you are familiar with Salisbury you know there is only a couple of commercial real estate firms in the area. If you need something you know where to go. If a company is exploring a new area to expand their operations, most of the time they will look up Towns and listings on the internet, contact a local rep and ask them to make suggestions on their needs before visiting. Personally I think the signs are useless and an eyesore.

To conclude where I am going with this: I believe the excessive leasing and sale signs throughout Salisbury is doing the town a disservice. Anyone living in the town is constantly being reminded of the decline and anyone visiting the town is left saying to themselves ‘the economy is terrible here’. Worst of all, year after year, the signs are in the same locations; nothing changes.

I loved Salisbury and hope to return the Eastern Shore one day, and I want Salisbury to do well and succeed. Just my thoughts, and I was curious if anyone else that reads your blog feels the same. It’s the little things that change a person’s perception of an area.

They are all over, especially of course around college. Looks like there is not enough students for all the housing. I seriously hope these landlords lose there butts. We put up with the college animals on our street. They need to all go. Including the college itself. It's a disgrace, I won't even admit to graduating from there any longer as people really frown on it's reputation.

You said it !! Had to Move Due to LACK of Work
This is a nice area for those who don't need to work to get
by...
Not for those still struggling to make a living.........
It is a Retirement area and Medical field area plus a
Prison job area (Nobody wants) ......
It is a POOR area with High Unemployment / Bad Jobs
much like the Mountains in West Va .........
Most have to Leave after High School ...go in the Military
or College elsewhere...and cannot stay here
Only reason any try to stay here is Family is here....
You can't Make a good living just because they are Here...
I KNOW after waisting my life here for 60 years !!!!!!!!!

Seeing the empty buildings, people being laid off, no jobs that are worth anything is the constant reminder of how much Salisbury is a disappointment. We have Mayors who worry about one part of town and not all of Salisbury. Government more worried about statues then helping the residence who pay their salaries. I have lived in Salisbury my whole life and have to say, I am ready to move away, this town is going down and quick. So sad, but, we seem to be fighting a losing battle.

Being in the banking end of the real estate business in Salisbury....I have to agree with this posting. Rarely will a potential business operator rely on driving around looking for possible location options. But....they certainly will realize quickly the state of our economy. Why not just rent a billboard and put it in bold print!

Either way the buildings are empty and this area is not getting any better.

If it has not gotton any better here in 60 yrs (lifetime)

It ain't gett'in any better any time soon (in our lifetime)

NO good JOBS = Bad area to live Period

If ya like being poor ( I don't) then, STAY !!!!

8:56 I have my doubts about you graduating from SU. It's "their" butts. Respectfully, I'd think a college graduate would know that. If anything SU's reputation as an educational institution is skyrocketing. Imagine how much the economy would fall without the seasonal influx of college kids. Yeah, most of them are brats, but unfortunately it's the only big thing this place has anymore.

Why would students want to come back and live/work in a place with people like this who just want them gone?

If the college goes.....Salisbury as a city will close up within 2 years tops!

Salisbury is not the same place it was 20/30 years ago. Now the area promotes a transient society where no one actually lays down roots and holds any permanence in the area. It's a pedestrian town where no one stays for long and if they do, they go to devious means to keep things working for their personal benefit at the expense of the citizenry as a whole.

Anon 8:56 You are the most narrow minded person to ever comment on this Blog.
College animals! As a business owner, I realize firsthand the economic impact that Salisbury University brings to this community. Your comments are shocking, can't even believe that you graduated from SU. I employee several students and get nothing but compliments.

Salisbury's downfall has nothing to do with Salisbury University. The town's people have long hated the students that provide the hands that feed their families because they bring in money otherwise unavailable. The town's upper echelons should've embraced SU many years ago instead of harassing students but they never learn.

I have been here for over 30 years and my wife and I have decided its time to go. It breaks my heart, but with all the murders, rapes, robberies, and the fact no one will address it only means it will get worse. I plan on working for another 5 years and will have enough to get out of here I hope before I become a victim of these crimes. It's so sad.....

Upper echelons eh? Having money doesn't mean one is smart and that definitely shows around here. We have yet to embrace one darn thing - especially since that flimsy bypass was completed in 2002.

Sad!

It's all elected officials fault, run on one issue and do the exact opposite once in.

This is Detroit if SU wasn't here. One of the top 3 employers in town and the revenue generated from students locally carry da bury

SU is the heart of this pathetic town.
If it weren't for the college, it would be a dead town.

Think of what it could have been: Charlotte, Blacksburg, Columbia, great college towns that grew and embraced the universities.

This place is filled with elites who inherited their money, and are too stupid to operate their businesses. Most of the rich people here are really dumb people. Not all of them of course, but certainly the vast majority of them. I have met some really stupid people since moving here 5 years ago. It is so much better than New York, but it could be really nice if the locals would just get out of the way.

I have a supply of ammo and plan on toughing it out.
