Leaders at Salisbury-based Perdue Farms said they have made progress in their effort to improve the lives of their birds.
Perdue announced plans a year ago to change how it breeds, raises and slaughters its chickens and released the first annual report about it Monday.
Jim Perdue, company chairman, and Bruce Stewart-Brown, senior vice president of food safety, quality, and live operations, said the changes would eventually affect more than 1,500 contract farmers and 5,000 chicken houses.

They are chickens.......going to end up on a bbq pit, in a deep fryer, baking in a oven or on a trout line for crab bait.....how much money should be spent on welfare??? PLEASE!!!!
Hi. We're chickens. Got food?
Yes, they are an animal we consume, however
it's best for the people and more humane
for the chicken . A win, win situation!.
I commend them for doing so,
Thank you Perdue.
Hmmmm perdue where Jake days daddy works cares more about chickens than his stupid son jake does about crime in Danbury.
Lol
Get some Texas Pete hot sauce on my plate with my fried chicken and collard green.....ice cold Pepsi to wash it down......FEAST!!!
I would think a happy chicken tastes better, so it follows that these chickens may bring more money if they do. Everybody's happy.
Danbury, Connecticut?
Ultimate power trip. Standing in a chicken house with thousands of chickens clucking away, turn and shout as loud as you can, "SHUT UP!"
Silence! Tell them to just talk among themselves, they will slowly murmur until it's full blown clucking again, but hey, if you ever need that uplift during the day, it's there, lol!
And you didn't think there's any fun on the farm...
Hey Jim,
Want to do something meaningful every day. Try picking up the dead chickens on road on Rt 13, that is once they make a miracle escape from the steel cages that have those clever covers to conceal their trip to impending death!
Just wondering if you ever sleep, or it just about the money, not the killing?
Golly Gee Whiz, I've never been able to distinguish a dead chick on the road way as to it being a Mountaire, or Allen Harim, or Tyson, or Perdue. What's the trick in recognizing a "Jim" chicken?
Actually it has been a while since I have seen an escaped chicken in my line of travel
8:11- Those clever covers are only used in the colder or wetter days, because it is HUMANE. Do you think trolling is "doing something meaningful?" I am sure he sleeps just fine.
The report also indicated that several of the chickens have been awarded job placements in Jake's administration.
