OCPD Chief Ross Buzzuro presented the annual crime report for 2016 to the Mayor and Council on Tuesday and the 14-page document showed crime rates in most categories continued to trend downward. The 2015 report showed crime in most statistical categories had dropped to 25-year lows, but the 2016 report released this week showed the rates dipping further by an average of 14 percent.
“The continued drop in crime rates is a true testament to the hard work of the men and women of this department,” he said. “Our personnel work extremely hard every single day to ensure the safety of the residents and visitor of Ocean City and the statistics and accomplishments highlighted in this report prove that to be true.”

If crime rates are that low then it is time to reduce the number of police and cut the budget.
That sounds like the same tired mantra we keep hearing from Jake Day and Jim Ireton!

That's because pot arrests aren't being counted any longer. Look at the serious crime #'s, they are UP!
Time to cut hours and the budget if crime is down. Cops aren't preventing it, they show up after it happens.

OC Transportation hires good people too. They just don't pay them as much because they are not in any union. The reality for the crime drop though is the preemptive measures the Town has take such as licensee plate scanners. Not long ago, 6 thugs from Salisbury (or anywhere else) could swipe a car and some tags for a fun trip to Ocean City. I now see those cars being pulled over as they arrive, followed by cuffs and tow truck which effectively ends their party weekend. The culprits don't even know what happened to them other than realizing their next vacation would need to be somewhere else.

Having resided and owning property in OC, I can share that LE is doing an exemplary job. I find them to be very courteous, polite and professional in the commission of their duties. To those readers who suggest reducing LE due to the reduction of crime, I invite you to consider what those actions would provide, which would most definitely be an increase in crime. I for one and happy to pay into tax rolls that reflect a very active, visible (and dare I say successful) and proactive LE presence in OC.

Richard Boone - So happy that you are please with the OCPD. Most likely you have not been the victim of a crime yet. It is a matter of time. Read the police blotters. Majority of the time is states that they OCPD responded to the scene of "X" crime. Rarely is it the case where a report say the OCPD say as a result of police work that "X" was prevented.
They say crime is down but rapes are up in OC. See how the media spins things?
5:18 drug arrests are not counted in crime rates. Part 1 crimes are what determine the crime rate.
Mr Boone @ 9:50 - to share I have been involved in two instances in the last year with regard to crime. The first was a theft situation and the second was a property crime issue. Both were handled expediantly, and in both cases arrests were made and the appropriate restitution was made. While I am certain others who have been the victim of crimes may have had different results, I can honestly report that I am quite pleased with how these issues were resolved. I live on the North end of OC very close to Fenwick, I also know a number of property owners who are similarly pleased with OCPD.

I think the "Richard Boone" reference was directed at you for using the name Paladin. Google both and you will see the connection. Makes me old that I put it together. Both instances you described are a reactive rather than proactive. While you are happy with the result, the police did nothing to prevent the crime but rather reacted and caught the offender. If crime is down then less officers are needed to take reports and track down petty theft offenders. No?

I am glad you had a positive experience with the police, any police. While theft and property crimes are, well crimes, I think most would be thinking of violent crimes and crimes where people are directly involved.
It's good there were arrests in the crimes you mentioned. And kudos to the police for being able to make them. I would suggest that different types of crimes and different types of victims have different responses from police, all police.
They certainly will behave differently to someone who has the means to pursue any wrong doing on their part versus someone who has trouble paying a parking ticket for example.
And that's all I will say about this. I don't want to belittle the police or you or anyone else. You had good experiences and that needs to be mentioned to counter all the negative experiences other people have had.
I hope everyone can have the same experiences that you have.
