Syracuse, N.Y. — Sears will be closing more Sears and Kmart stores in early 2017.
Business Insider, citing information provided by half a dozen of the retailer's employees, is reporting that Sears will close 28 Sears and Kmart stores between late January and mid April. Most of the stores will begin liquidation sales on Jan. 6, according to the report.
Sears Holdings, the owner of the two retail chains, has only announced the closings internally and has made no mention of them on its website. Business Insider said it confirmed its list of the stores slated for closing with store employees.
None of the stores on the list are in the Syracuse area. The nearest ones on the latest closing list are a Kmart in New Hartford, near Utica, and Sears stores in Cheektowaga and Amherst, near Buffalo.
A store-closing sale sign went up at the Sears Outlet store in the Destiny USA mall in Syracuse earlier this month. A mall representative said Wednesday the store will be closing in late January.

Done in by Walmart and Target, Home Depot and Lowe's.
Imagine that list will grow when year-end numbers are in...
When I went through the mall, a week before Christmas, Boscov's was crowded but in Sears you could have roller skated, there was so few people.
Someone please ask them to close our K Mart. It is always junked up and dirty.
I was in Kmart and the heat wasnt even turned on. If it was, it must have been set at just enough to keep the pipes from freezing.
Kmart before Bay Bridge (heading west) is the nicest/cleanest super K I have ever seen. Just shows you how nice some things can be.
As a whole, Sears/Kmart business model was doomed from the onset!
Very sad, they seem to be going the way of Montgomery Ward. I think they bit off more than they could chew when they acquired Kmart. The deal was the Death of both stores. I now Shop at Ace Hardware. They have acquired the craftsman brand. I still like Craftsman products and tools. The last time I went to Sears was a few months ago to look at some sneakers. They didn't have much to pick from in my size and a poor selection. No one was there to help you either, so I just gave up and went somewhere else. They longer sell TV's or electronics. My Sears card has become useless! I guess appliances will be the next to go. Where will we get parts or services for the appliances and outdoor equipment I still have? Will they still honor their service contracts? I know a lot of former Montgomery Wards customers were left holding the bag when the store closed and service contracts were no longer honored. Will be interesting to see what other stores will eventually close. I would bet JCPenney will be next.
The Kmart in Salisbury is trashed. The bed linens are so inferior and the only things they can really sell are clothes. It's so dark and dingy in there I don't shop there.
Bob Pinto is still alive?
I think K=Mart bought Sears, not the other way around.
Would not miss the local Sears at all.
