Police: Punkin Chunkin explosion leaves one in critical condition

A person is in critical condition after an explosion at Punkin Chunkin Sunday afternoon, according to Delaware State Police.

The persion was hurt when an air cannon went off, sending with it large pieces of material from the cannon.

The person was struck in the head and went down motionless at the Bridgeville event. Paramedics, state troopers and fire personnel were called into the roped off scene, closed to team members and the media.

A state police helicopter landed in the fields at the Punkin Chunkin event and transported the injured person away.

State troopers are on scene investigating and gathering information on what exactly occurred when the air cannon lost pieces.

The area remains closed off to most attendees and trams, and organizers are now trying to clear out the grounds.
