Md. Gov. Hogan’s soaring popularity not helping down-ballot Republicans

WASHINGTON — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has made it clear he will not support the man at the top of the Republican ticket for president, and it has done little to hurt his popularity or reputation in the state.

In fact, it may have helped.

The latest Washington Post-University of Maryland poll finds that Hogan now has a 71 percent approval rating, an improvement over the 66 percent approval rating he received in April’s poll.

That support is widespread, with the least support coming from liberals. Still, 59 percent of liberals say they approve of the Republican’s work.

“He’s a very moderate Republican, which is very hard to find these days,” University of Maryland political science professor Stella Rouse told WTOP. “And the fact that he has come out so strongly in saying that he is not going to vote or support Donald Trump certainly helps him in a state like Maryland.”

It seems to me the media is putting their typical "spin" once again. They know they cannot harm Hogan, period. However, their poll numbers clearly do not reflect many of us on the Shore. Yes, we like Hogan but there are tens of thousands of people very disappointed in his decision not to support Donald Trump. It means to me that he thinks he is better. By simply taking away ALL of the things that brought O'Malley down in polls across the state is EASY to do. Hogan, (like O'Malley) is not bringing or encouraging businesses to the Shore. The Shore truly needs to break away from the state. Once Ocean City stops feeding the state the second largest tax revenue, maybe, just maybe the state will start showing us more respect. In the mean time our representatives from the Shore are constantly fighting an uphill battle fighting the tree huggers on the western shore, being FORCED to vote on issues they do not believe in to salvage what we have on the Eastern Shore.

When will we finally have someone with the stones to threaten to break away from the state?

By not endorsing Trump, he's really shown his true colors. Nothing more than a RINO politician!

He'll not get my vote!

Great point joe but hogan is a R.I.N.O

I don't see how it helps.. I'm an Eastern Shore Maryland Democrat and I WILL vote for Trump. Hillary will continue to destroy our country just like Obama has done...

Business are never coming back the Shore. The only jobs are and will be service industry jobs. Between the lack of willingness to take direction or learn an new way of doing things and the need to take off days for drinking, hunting, fishing, oystering, muskrat and truck fixing seasons, it is hard to convince anyone to own a major business here. It has little to do with Hogan and more to do with YOU!

1:08 you should change party affiliation or register independent.

Hogan lost my vote, and all of my friends too. The only important poll will be his upcoming reelection.

I hope he goes down in flames.

I'd vote for O'Malley....that's how much I hate Hogan.

Hogan has done more suffering through chemo therapy than any Governor prior.
Lesson learned: it's the man, not the party.

You all realize this is a moot point here...revolution 2.0 coming. Its inevitable! If you don't understand this by now, you never will...

Hogans done nothing to stop the robberies implemented by omally and his merry thugs. To state his popularity hasnt fallen is a flat out lie

The only things the folks in Annapolis care about on the E.S. are their hunting property, boat dockage and/or their place in O.C. The shore and it's residents are non factors.

1:50 MUST be a Democrat... always telling other people what they should do without understanding the problem..

The importance of this election should be considered, especially when it comes to appointing justices to the Supreme Court. Trump was my last choice of all the Republican candidates and I knew I wasn't going to vote for Hillary. But Trump's list of conservative judges he'd consider appointing and his VP pick, Pence, have convinced me he'd be better than the Democrat's fraudulent pick.

Hogan's non-support of Trump may very well come back to haunt him AND the state of Maryland. If Trump wins the election, there may be repercussions to Maryland, as it is a state that receives a hefty portion of Federal contracts and funds. Hmmmm
