It is neither forward or backward but moving back and forth in a loop!
Your thinking about it has nothing to do with the motion of the train. It's a pretty clever video loop, but with a kind of sloppy splice.
The alternating red and white, with no intermediate frames makes direction up to the viewer. You could create the same effect (animated CG, of course) with the train sitting still and have the cars change colors at a rapid rate.
Its like a timing strobe.
All you party poopers just need to quit, it's pretty neat I think.
