Baltimore to use up to $22.8M federal funding for HIV outreach

The Baltimore City Health Department has received federal grant funding worth up to $22.8 million over four years that will go toward strengthening the city’s HIV prevention strategy.

Baltimore plans to use the money from the Centers for Disease Control to target outreach and prevention programs to men who have sex with men and transgender individuals, two groups at high risk for HIV infection.

The grant funding will create up to 70 new jobs at the city and community groups that will work with the health department. New positions will focus on community outreach and education and will not require a medical background.

Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen said her department plans to hire from within the communities it wants to reach.
