Gov. Paul LePage's plan to prevent anyone with a felony drug conviction from collecting cash welfare benefits advanced Monday in Augusta with a bill that would extend a program launched earlier this year.
In January, LePage and his administration began administering drug tests on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families applicants who have had felony drug convictions within the past 20 years. That came after the concept received strong legislative support in 2011 and after the law was adjusted at the advice of the attorney general's office to avoid lawsuits.

i think anyone receiving state assistance should be given a drug test and if they fail lose there benefits
I agree. Also, add in EVERY SINGLE person who receives a tax payer funded check. ALL elected officials, ALL government workers, ALL people receiving Social Security or disability. Every form of handout should be watched and investigated. It won't, but we can dream.
I agree... Do it!!
Watch out for the Lefties who are going to make something out of it saying it doesn't work.
Giving taxpayer monies without oversight is reckless. Enforcing mandatory drug testing should be a no brainer. Recipient benefits should be taxed. After all, hardworking Americans have been taxed on these dollars which penalizes those who are contributing to society even more while the recipients collect these benefits with no obligation to contribute to the system they are benefiting from.
Also add mandatory sterilization to welfare moms. No more kids to be born into the system for us working folks to take care of.
Everyone that is on welfare should be drug tested, period.
Leave the SSI recipients, at least, the ones who worked for it, OUT of that dragnet please.
They aren't "receiving" ANYTHING they didn't earn.
They can use heroin if they so desire and it isn't ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS.
Oh but they are Imclain, at least 67% ARE receiving benefits they did not earn. That happens to be the percentage of SS recipients that paid in less then they are taking out.
Please tell me this guy's going to run for President. Parse the heavens someone finally gets the picture...
"at least 67% ARE receiving benefits they did not earn" I'm curious how you arrive at that figure.
I agree whole heartily every welfare person should be drug tested and not forewarned. When the test comes back then and only then if no drugs are found, perhaps they may qualify for program. They shouldn't be given anything until the test come back. And a certified medical person not some idiot from social services should do the testing.
GOOD IDEA!!!!
If I have to work and have random drug tests then so should the recipients of my hard earned tax dollars!! Stay clean and go to work!!!
