Jimmy Carter doesn’t think marriage laws should be decided at the federal level.
“I’m kind of inclined to let the states decide individually,” the former president told WFAA, an ABC affiliate, in an interview that aired Sunday.
“As you see, more and more states are deciding on gay marriage every year,” Carter said. “If Texas doesn’t want to have gay marriage, then I think that’s a right for Texas people to decide.”
He also spoke out in support for the religious liberty of church leaders who do not support same-sex marriage.

I'm curious. Could two gay muslims get married in a mosque? If not, would the government step in and demand they marry the two?
..."will the real Jimmy Carter please stand up!...
One of the few times I agree with this liberal!
12:18 let them try, now that would be interesting...
The Peanut farmer is right on this one and the same logic should be applied to most things. The state should have the final say on much, much more.
Even a blind hog finds an ear of corn every once in a while.
12:18 The government will never step in and force any church to perform a wedding. Even today if a church refuses to marry a interracial couple the government cannot force it.
This is a straw argument that doesn't go with the facts.
If you are married in Maryland then move to Texas. Texas should recognize that marriage, we all live in the US.
More importantly, when the voters in the state respond in a referendum, the courts should NOT be allowed to overturn it!
12:54 Can we have a referendum to take away the tax exception of churches? I would love to see that.
