CREDIT CARD SCAM AFFECTS OCEAN CITY BUSINESSES AND CITIZENS

(July 31, 2014) – The Ocean City Police Department is advising citizens of a recent cyber-attack that compromised the security of numerous credit card processing companies nationwide. One of the victims of the security breach includes an out-of-state company that has contracts with numerous Ocean City businesses, primarily restaurants and bars.

Businesses that were affected were compromised from June 2 until July 9, 2014; however, those systems are now secure. The United States Secret Service is currently investigating this case.

Citizens are strongly encouraged to check your bank statement to ensure that you are not a victim of this cyber-crime scam. Any citizen that believes their information may have been compromised should contact their bank or credit card issuer immediately.

It's only a 30 mile trip to OC for myself and a lot of Sby News readers.Cash is the logical choice for some of us,unless it's say a family coming from way off for a vacation.I can recall when travelers checks were the rage, but now is cash only for me.

Why do WE have to contact anyone? Why doesn't the businesses that put us at risk contact them?

Got me for $1320. First fraudulent transaction was from Walmart north Salisbury for $1003. Called them up and they have no record of any transactions at all for that amount. You'd think a purchase that expensive would call for an identification check first. Nope none at all. Then it spread to ocean city and finally ended in Texas and Florida. This all happened in a weeks time beginning in July.

What the hell is the Secret Service doing investigating this? Have the DOJ & FBI gone on vacation?

They do counterfeit money, so this is logical. As to the $1320 mentioned by 8;43 the group involved wouldn't have waited a month to use your card info. Some other hacker got it weeks later in some other attack and evidently wasted no time.
