If Legislators Do Nothing, They Get A Pay Raise

If legislators do nothing to stop it in the next 19 days, members of the Maryland General Assembly elected this fall — including probably two-thirds of the current members — will get a 16% raise over the next four years, bringing their annual salaries to $50,330. They currently make $43,500 for what is technically a part-time job.

Lawmakers have already allowed the next governor to get a 20% raise to $180,000 by doing nothing to stop it in the first 45 days of the current session.

The lawmakers have not had a raise in eight years; the governor’s salary has been $150,000 for nine years.]

I wish that I could vote myself a pay raise.

8:37 - it's the other way around....they didn't vote to not get one....

They can all campaign on the premise that "I didn't vote myself a raise".

part of what is wrong with our elected officials - they make it so they have denyability....while not having the spine/stones to actually do something!

Oh blah,blah,blah....there are alot of people that haven't had a pay increase in 8 years and even more. So logic deems a pay raise even though the money's not there...unreal, all the while new taxes keep coming down the pipe. I really believe they are pushing for a revolt...why else would they do things like this.

This is so wrong. Everyone out here is struggling and they vote themselves a payraise? Come down from your thrones and try living off what the most of us bring home and see if you can make it.

These are your "leaders", including "your guy", who told you he/she was going to "change things". You fell for it.
I keep telling you --- none of them "represent" you or give a rat's ace about what you think about anything....only how big a bribe (okay, YOU can call them "campaign contributions" if it makes you feel good about "your guy") you can deliver. Keep cheering.
There IS only ONE WAY to "change things". Take them out into the street and hang them. Each and every one. In public. On TV. That's the second thing I've been telling you for a while.
Every day, "your guy" keeps proving me right.

For those interested, I co-sponsored bill HJ-9 with a number of other Republican Delegates. This House Joint Resolution would have rejected the proposed pay increase for members of the General Assembly. The Democrats have left it stuck in the Rules Committee so they will not have to take a vote on the bill.

As a former member of the state Legislative Salary and Benefits Commission, I can assure you that no raise was recommended under the Erlich administration's Commission, and no increase in salary was approved for the legislature. The howling and wailing was loud when the Commission recommended no raise. Since the Commission did not recommend an increase then the legislature would have been required to pass its own legislation for an increase. Of course, this did not happen because the legislators would have voted themselves a raise. Go figure! More importantly the cost of the salary increase to the legislators is minimal compared to the huge raise in the pensions of retired legislators, which are DIRECTLY tied to the active legislator's salary increase. The pension increases dwarf the active legislator's salary increases. This will cost the Maryland taxpayer millions of dollars a year to finance this huge pension increase to former part-time legislators, who are receiving ridiculous pensions for years after "retiring" from legislative public service.
