Lost Dogs 11-1-13: UPDATE

Hi Joe

We have recovered both puppies. An absolute miracle. Thank you for all your help
.

Hi Joe
Great news. We have found the male. He was picked up and hidden until the rightful owner, us came forward. He got separated from his sister. He was found one mile away from our home across from the Mardela High School. One down and one to go. The female is at someone's house somewhere.
We live on RT 313 3/4 of a mile north of the high school.

Last evening my two beautiful and partially trained Fox Red Labradors took off on us. They have never done this so this is very strange. I feel perhaps they were stolen but maybe someone is just keeping them until they find the owner. They are one male and one female. The female has a choker chain. The male has nothing on. They are too young for tags. They are only 4.5 months old. They are fox red but some would call them yellow. Please help. I understand that several hunting dogs have been stolen not so far away.
410-603-1400 They were lost in the Mardela Springs area.

Excuse me, but I didn't realize there was an age requirement for a tag or a chip.

Sorry you've lost your dogs & hopefully they will b found.

I would warn you & others about using choke collars on dogs! Your dog can easily choke to death from these collars ----if left
unattended ----a horrible way to die for them. I hope you will be more
fortunate should you find the dog.

I would suggest you ck into buying "Head Collars" which allow you to have total control of your dog in a humane way.

I think even better than microchips are to just write a phone number and the dog's name in Magic Market on their collars. I'm forever finding wayward dogs-we are on close to 400 acres of woods- and if I can get close enough to read their names on a collar or on a tag, they tend to relax enough to then let me get either a phone number or the number off of their rabies tag which can be used to identify them.
I think microchipping is way overrated as far as finding lost dogs and is more beneficial if a dog gets stolen to help identity the rightful owner, but that's dependent on if veterinarian even scans the dog.

They only need to be 3 months for a rabies shot in which they will receive a tag. The must have a rabies shot by law by 4 months of age in Maryland.

A pet reunited is happy news.
I too think microchipping gives pet owners a false sense of security.
I found a company right here in the US that makes lightweight nylon dog collars that you can take to any local embroidery shop and have your telephone number embroidered on it. If the collar is too thick it can't be embroidered. It's called Preston Ribbon out of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Or you can write a number on it with a large marker.

Might I suggest you attend the local Dog Show this week at the Civic Center. You'll be amazed at the quantity of things you can buy there that you cannot see anywhere else.

I just may do that Joe. After 20 some years of being dogless we decided to get another one. He's 8 months old now and pure joy! What's really funny is I'm a frugal shopper when it comes to us humans and our menus consist of what's on sale in the grocery store. When it comes to the "baby" I don't care and buy him whatever I see that I think he will like. He's Mother's Angel and Daddy's Best Buddy.

Your puppy should receive its first rabies vaccination between 16 and 26 weeks of age. While rabies is a very dangerous disease for both dogs and humans, your puppy is unlikely to catch it from another dog, due to the fact that rabies vaccinations are required by law. He is also unlikely to be exposed to wild animals carrying the disease during these first few months of his life. The age of first rabies vaccination, as well as the booster protocol, may vary somewhat in accordance with local law.

The realization is nearly enough to stop your heart: your dog is missing. Someone left a door open, your dog dug a hole under the fence, or the roofer forgot to close the gate. Whatever the reason, it's not an unusual occurrence.

You can prepare for this frightening possibility by getting an ID tag engraved with your contact information. Many local laws require that dogs wear ID tags, so you might need one to be in compliance.
