A Letter To The Editor 6-11-13

I have been reading about the Health Department raising the license for food service (restaurants). Didn't really hear when the council were gong to vote on this. I read on Facebook this morning there was a special meeting held to approve the tax hike and the raising of the food service fee. I just spoke with a Council member to ask when is the meeting scheduled. He informed me it was this morning and the restaurant fee will be raised from $350.00 to $500.00 per restaurant.

These local restaurants are hanging on the edge, fighting chain restaurants, the economy, raising of food prices, equipment, electric, gas, insurance, taxes from city, county and state. Higher taxes for unemployment, alcohol taxes going higher. It is hard to swallow with this new almost double license from the health department. They need to do what we restaurants have done...lay off some one or delete a position. There is no money tree. From what I hear Mr. Bob Culver is the ONLY one who stood up for the local restaurants.

Thanks Stevie, John. I guess you love eating at the chain restaurants. They will be only ones left because government has put such a burden on the local people they can't survive.

Even if we had attended the council meeting it probably wouldn't made a difference. I guess this raise for the county will purchase a few more vehicles for the county.

I watched the meeting on PAC 14. It was a 4-3 vote with Prettyman, Hall,Sample-Hughes, and Matt Holloway voting to raise taxes and fees and Barkovitch, Joe Holloway, and Culver voting no. Looks as if we have three rinos on the council.

I agree that $500.00 is ridiculous. If they are going to charge that amount we should be able to view their reports on line and a letter grade should be displayed on the restaurant front.

get rid of tax and spend prettyman, hall, sample-hughes and m. Holloway asap. these council people Don't represent the people. they need to get their collective heads out of the sand.

look around the country and see All the towns, cities, and states that have Lowered regs and taxes growing at a great rate, creating a good climate for jobs, bringing businesses in, making their areas business friendly and and a great place to raise families.

this is Not our area today because we don't have the people in leadership that really understand how business works. all they know is tax and spend and make more regulations for all businesses. they are choking everyone.

Doubling the fee would make it $700. Stop exaggerating.

And seriously...if $150 breaks any business and forces them to shut their doors, they are on the way out already.

Not saying that this is a good fee increase or not. Maybe it will pay for a good program or something. But the author does a bad job using hyperbole to try and make this a bigger deal than it already is.

10:12-You are obviously not a business person nor business minded. It's not just this
$150.00. This $150.00 is on top of everything else that has gone up recently which includes everything except nightly receipts.
Did the HD make any cuts within their dept? They should first attempt cuts to see if that helps before raising fees. If prudent intelligent people were running the show they would try this angle first. Their goal should be first and foremost to do everything possible to keep any and all restaurants afloat. These businesses are what helps keep the economy going.
