Smithfield Foods Subsidiary Plans To Close Maryland Plant, Consolidate Operations

LANDOVER, Md. — A Smithfield Foods subsidiary plans to close its Landover, Md., plant by early fall as it consolidates operations.

The company said Friday that some of the plant’s 175 workers will be offered transfers to other Smithfield Packing Co. plants. Smithfield also said that it will negotiate with United Food and Commercial Workers union officials about other possible opportunities for employees.

Smithfield Packing plans to move bone-in ham production from the Landover plant to plants in North Carolina and Kentucky.

O'Malley and the Maryland Democrats are planning to place a 9% tax on ham products. Hell, they've raised taxes on everything else. The one thing left in Maryland that is boneless is voters!.

Good news and good work from Maryland legislators. This is a GREAT opportunity for workers to relocate to a lower cost of living area outside Maryland. Just think, fishing, hunting, and all that outdoor stuff. If you don't want to move, the Gov is visiting Israel soon which may provide even MORE job opportunities. Maryland IS truly the land of opportunity!

Another company leaving Maryland? This is starting to sound like a Taco Bell commercial. They are all running for the border.

Smithfield Foods management is smart. I would get the heck out of Dodge to if I were in their shoes.

No need to work for nothing - and that is what they will be doing if they stay here in Maryland. Maryland is literally a 'tax hell' just like money magazine said.

I don't blame them, and am shopping for a new state as well. Kentucky and Tennessee are looking pretty good....

Or Mexico.

Hate to tell you but Tennessee is number one for taxes per person. Even beating out Maryland.
