A Letter To The Editor 2-1-13

Mr. Albero, I am curious about why most of the neighborhoods on the West side of Salisbury rarely see a snow plow. Are other County neighborhoods plowed? We were just having a conversation about it, and I thought possibly you could shed some light on which areas get plowed and which do not and, of course, the rationale behind the choices. If you can't, possibly some informed readers might know?

Our street was plowed a couple of weeks ago and an overly amount of salt. First time in 20 years that I have been here. So it is not just the west side.

I live in Fruitland and haven't seen a snow plow ever.

I would like to know why there are perfectly good houses sitting boarded up on Lake street. It would seem that someone could use a place to live. I always get discouraged when I see houses boarded up. Habitat worked so hard on Rose Street and it looks so nice...why are these houses sitting empty? Anyone know?

9:58, the foundation was moving/sinking. if you look the steps are sinking below the house line.

The county and state employees that plow only go out when told , the rest of their time is spent twiddling their thumbs and complaining about work.

Wicomico always botches snow storms. Predicting 1", and there's a scrape truck and salt truck on every road. 4+" inches, that freezes to the roads and they're no where to be found. I clear my own now.

The County continually raises taxes, while cutting services. Thank Rick Pollitt! If this is County Government with an executive, let's go back to not having one.

Does the county even use salt on the roads? I know the state does but I have never seen a county truck with salt on it. We have yet to see a plow this year. There really hasn't been that much snow but what was there was a sheet of ice. Makes it a little hard to stop at those stop signs. A note to the plows..cover the parts of the roads that don't get sun!

the county does salt the roads. They were doing it this morning before the snow ever started falling. What a huge waste! Actually saw 4 plows on the roads even though there was nothing on the roads.

I would guess that there are more farmers on the east side, and that is why the roads are cleared better.

Were they county or state trucks? The state salts the roads but I have never seen a county truck with salt on it

I live on the east side and our roads hardly ever see a plow unless its 6 inches or more then they might come down here once or twice.

There has NOT been enough snow to justify any plow this season.

Salt? Sand? Sure!! Those patches of ice that take longer to melt due to being shaded should be salted and/or sand applied.

But unless you have 3 or more inches of snow on the roads, plowing is a waste of time and resources.

Exactly a couple inches and plows really! Nanny State and for the one who said never in Fruitland have they seen a plow they must be BLIND! Helpless Cry Babies always complaining about something!

No plows in Parsonsbug.

i live on the east side of the city near the park. the main road leading to our neighborhood was not plowed.

Rock salt is mixed in with the concrete and asphalt when it's put down. That way it does'nt need as much attention as the non salted section of town. The snow melts all by itself.

Daddio got it right.

Experts? Go figure!

Maybe you should check your facts....the state salted today, not the county.

Maybe you should all check on the County website under Snow Removal questions and answers. The county salts it's major roadways during all snow events. Do you really want the money spent to "plow" roads for an inch and a half of snow? The county plows all roads when 3 inches of snow falls. For anyone to say that you have never seen a plow, you must have been asleep. The county has about 700 miles of roads and salts over 200 lane miles. At $70 per ton for salt, which is the same price as blacktop, would you rather see your money spent on a dusting of snow, or maybe pave some roads. These are facts and not the fiction in many of the earlier comments. Also, learn the difference between State, County, and City streets. The state has all the money, that is why they dumped all the salt this morning for a trace of snow, the county and city are strapped for cash and salt and plow when necessary. Why would anyone expect a plow for an inch or two of snow? Do you realize how hard it is on equipment to scrape that amount off of the road? Where were all of you that are concerned now about roads when the State took 90 percent of the highway funds away from the county? I don't hear any of you suggesting that you would be willing to pay a little more so that the roads can be maintained. Did you really think that the revenue cap wouldn't have effects like this on services? All I have heard from people on this blog is "cut the fat" well, like I have said, there is no fat to cut, we are cutting services that you obviously expect. http://www.wicomicocounty.org/departments/public_works/divisions/roads/QandA_SnowRemoval_2013.pdf

Glad that somebody has some sense on this post. I live off of Airport Rd, and have seen the County salt the main roads near my house during each of the three snowfalls that we have had. I have been happy with their response. I don't expect them to salt every road. I just take my time on my small street until I get to the main roads. Funny, all these people buy SUV's then complain about having to use the 4 wheel drive. HAHA

You obviously don't know what the county workers do. Quit the stereotyping.

What "storm" this year has been "botched".?

Anonymous said...

The county tax rate has been falling for years, and has had to cut services.

Anonymous said...

The county salts over 200 miles of roads. They have 6 salt trucks. They don't plow until there is 3 inches of snow....have we had 3 inches? I haven't seen it.

thank you mr outen for your expert analysis!!!! p.rai would be proud of you!

i think the writer of the 'letter to the editor" fails to realize that no one had snow plowed because there wasn't enough snow to "plow" no matter what side of the city you live on

Whoever 6:08 is, (Mr. Outen?) I appreciate your comment. It makes sense to me. Seems to me that people just like to complain.

I don't care what anyone says.....Mr. Sharma was a good man and cared deeply about the community. He was a victim of circumstance.

How is it a waste? Haven't you ever seen the stripes of calcium they put down when a snow storm is expected?

Plows actually carry the salt, so why shouldn't they be on the road?

And they routinely ride the roads to assess them for what they might or might not need.

If they were not out there you would be complaining about that.

I appreciate those guys whenever I see them, snow or no snow.

If I ever go into a store when they are in there, I will buy them coffee.

They do clear the roads. And guess what, they are not cleared when they start. So give some credit.

I know right.

Thank you. You do not know how much the guys our their working appreciate that. It is more the gesture than the cost of the coffee. Many of those guys make about $10 per hour. Despite popular opinion, they have a goal to clear the roads. Without the use of salt on secondary roads, they can only get them down to what has been packed by traffic, but they do try.
